Really strange timing. I was all for declining the option. I said I thought we'd end up doing that at the start of the season. But to do it on the 1st...right after the deadline to catch on with another team?

It feels like the Brewers have just given up on trying to get hot and win that Wild Card. Chacin and now Jeffress? You're giving away two of the guys who'd most likely help you if you were trying to get hot.

That said, Jeffress was great for the Brewers. He pitched way over his head last year and helped get them 1 game from the World Series.

But to release him hours away from the Midnight deadline....makes you wonder if something happened. This seems...well, as you said, strange.

Yeah, ineffective this year probably related to workload last year, but must not have assumed he was worth 4.3 million dollar club option in 2020.

I would say his pitching this year was more him reverting back to his career norms than the workload. His workload last year wasn't much different it'd been throughout his career.

He just wasn't as good as he pitched last year.

But more importantly, if this was JUST about him not being worth 4.3 next year, they could have just declined it at the end of this year. I'm 99 pct sure it wasn't a vesting option. So doing this 8 hours after the cutoff to catch on with a potential playoff team seems...almost punitive.

I guess they already had their minds made up about the option next year and so just decided to open up the 40 spot now for the upcoming September promotions.

Either way, man. Such an easy guy to root for and I hope his personal/career path continues in a positive direction. I hope both sides leave the door open for a possible return next year as I think he's due for some positive regression in 2020.

I'm very surprised that there are still people thinking that the Brewers have a shot yet this year. Very little has gone their way and their big producers haven't been producing consistently. I'm all for being positive, do you honestly believe that this team realistically has it in them?

I'd say the odds are pretty good that he'll be pitching out of the Reds pen next year. And probably pitching pretty well.

Maybe later this month...

Edit - Ok. Strike this.

Just saw report on MTBTR that he is shutting down for the rest of the season to be ready for spring training...

I still agree with Joey that Cinci could be a likely destination for him (to work with Derek Johnson again)...

Wow.. That's a shocker. Though it's as much a move about the 2020 contract as it is about the rest of this year.

If this is it for him with the Brewers, he'll be 5th in franchise history with 301 appearances.

Fans are going to hold out hope until the math doesn't work anymore. May not be logical, but being a fan rarely is.

4 games behind Cubs for WC spot and, including today, five games left against the Cubs. They are still in it until Sept 8th.....and then you'll pretty much know for sure if they are out of it.

I think it’s fair to still hope that the Brewers somehow get hot and make it in. Do I think it’s going to happen? No. But do I still hold out hope that they rattle off 13 of 15 over a stretch and somehow squeak in? Absolutely.

I’m not questioning if anyone hopes that they make it to the postseason. I would imagine everyone in here does. I was commenting that there are people that think they still have a realistic chance of making it.

Jeffress and Chacin will be lucky to get major league contracts this winter. They're not all that old but the game has changed and the Brewers weren't interested in bringing either back. I do think they'd like to bring Pomeranz back though if they can agree to terms. They want to see more of Jay Jackson in September. Is he worth a 40 man spot this winter? Is Nelson?

Who's next to go? Gio?

No rehab starts available with his injury probably sealed the deal for this year. Gave everything he had for this team. Can’t picture him pitching late in games vs us. If he doesn’t sign with us at a lower price, hope it’s an American League team.

This

also nothing off field happened. They needed room and werent picking up the option

Nothing tells you how this season has gone more then Jesus and JJ. 2 All Stars last season.......one traded for a minor league relief pitcher and 1 Injured, ineffective and then released.....throw in Shaw being so bad that he spent almost as much time in AAA as the majors and our best starter being horrible, injured and then released and it really is amazing we are over 500.

Thanks to JJ for all the great years with the Brewers........hope things work out for him either here or someplace else.

Definitely understand the business side of it because they need the 40 man spot and JJ just couldn't get guys out the 2nd half, but JJ was a guy I always rooted hard for. Sucks that he just couldn't get it done this year. Hope he turns it around and catches on somewhere.
