"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Burnes probably needs a sports psychologist after this outing. How could it be this bad?

Just got out of the first with only 4 runs. Could have been worse, 3 bb plus singles doubles hits all over the place. Goodness Gracious. He has to be pulled.

Pitched the 2nd > only gave up a home run.

Pitched 3 more innings, got better with each inning, struck out the side in the 5th. Thru 5 > 82 pitches 47 strikes.

5 ip 5 r 5 h 3 bb 6 K’s

Impressive comeback. Must have been throwing simulated games or lots of pitches in Arizona, to have thrown 80+ pitches tonight.

This season has been an absolute nightmare for Burnes. To go from pitching important innings in the NLCS as a rookie, to being in the opening day rotation the following year, to losing a rotation spot, to losing a roster spot, to getting shelled back on the farm.

In spite of this, given where the Brewers are at right now, I'd call him up, put him back in the rotation, and tell him he's our guy and that this is his spot the rest of the year regardless of results.

If there's any hope for him going forward, you have to try to give him something positive to build off of. Not only that but you have to figure out if he's even a viable option moving forward. This season is cooked for the Brewers, but it's not too late to find something with Burnes. Maybe. There's a non-zero chance that he never comes back from this.

Great take.

After that 1st inning horror show I wanted him pulled, but the brewers kept him pitching, and by gosh, each inning he got better. You nailed the brewers mind set I believe.

100% correct! Just make sure Pina is his personal catcher!

Pina will be the starter next year, and we'll be better for it. He has a history as a solid hitter. I swear most of his homers come in key moments. His defense is far superior, and salary is very manageable. I'd try to offer him a 3 year deal for about $10-12 million, with an option.

I really hope so. I know lot around here have blamed the collapse of the pitching on losing Derek Johnson, but I really wonder how much Grandal has contributed to that. Chemistry between the pitcher and catcher is vastly underrated. Just from my POV, our pitchers don't look comfortable with Grandal back there. Last year with Pina and Kratz, the pitchers appeared more confident and attacked, this year not so much. Outside of Woodruff, every pitcher has taken a step backwards. I understand why DS signed YG, but it just hasn't worked out and at $18 million, just not worth the money. With Pina, $1.6 this year, an option for next year for $1.85 million and he's an arbitration eligible in 2021. Easy decision in my mind, let Grandal walk, roll with Pina as the starter and I'd bring Kratz back just to see. If it worked before, it can work again!
