Pitch Counts

parkside21

Pitches-strikes - M Hendrickson 80-52; A Sele 13-7; H Kuo 43-29; K Escobar 103-70; B Donnelly 22-9; S Shields 9-6; K Gregg 18-12.

This may have been brought up before as a question somewhere, and if so I apologize, but I'm curious about pitch counts. The above is just copied and pasted from a box score showing pitch counts. My question is about 2 strike foul balls. When a batter fouls off 5 pitches when he has two strikes, how are those pitches reflected in a pitch count? Are they just ignored? Are they included as strikes? Or for some reason are they counted as balls in a pitch count? I've been wondering for quite some time...

ball:strike ratios aren't necassarily always that accurate I suppose

Although, it's assumed that anything that the batter got a piece of (whether foul or fair) was in the strike zone. It's not a flawless assumption, but it makes some sense and works for the most part.
