why 29 august may be the next "trade" deadline . . .

we all should know by now that players that were on a 40-man roster at any point in 2019 can no longer be traded to another team. however, teams may still make waiver claims, and any player that joins an organization by 11:59 pm eastern on 31 august is eligible for postseason play.

 

it's my understanding that outright waiver attempts take 48 hours. thus, any player that is placed on outright waivers after 11:59 pm eastern on thursday would not clear waivers until after that 31 august deadline--which means that not all teams would have had the full allotted time to submit a claim and see if they are awarded that claim.

 

thus, it's going to be interesting to see if there's a flurry of activity and a rush to attempt outright waivers of players by end of day thursday in order to allow all of the other teams a full 48 hours to make a claim before the 31 august deadline.

 

we've seen that some veterans (joulys chacin and scooter gennett) have been given the courtesy of an outright release, presumably bypassing outright waivers altogether--giving the veterans more time to negotiate as free agents with any team.

there will be an interesting chain reaction if there is indeed a flurry of outright attempts by 29 august, in that claiming clubs may have to clear space on their own 40-man rosters by trying to outright another player. the 48-hour window for such would start on friday morning, meaning any player claim would be awarded 1 september or later, making that player ineligible for postseason play.

 

like i said, things could get interesting in the next 53 hours . . .
