Scooter Gennett Released by the Giants today...

TURBO

Obviously the question will be asked...Will the Brewers claim him? He really would have no place on our roster, but it's fun to speculate.

Giants released 2B Scooter Gennett.

Gennett has struggled to the tune of a .226/.245/.323 batting line with just two home runs in 139 plate appearances this season between the Reds and Giants. He averaged an .859 OPS and 25 home runs between the 2017-2018 campaigns. Mauricio Dubon will apparently take over as the primary second baseman in San Francisco for the stretch run.

No. But if Saladino is out til October the Brewers should pick an IF up who can play SS this week. They are very thin there.

If Spangenberg is average or better there on D they can probably make due...as long as there isnt an injury.

technically, he can't be claimed. he wasn't placed on outright assignment waivers.

he was placed on outright release waivers, which means any team can sign him to a minor league or a major league deal.

I'd think of him more for next year, with a chance to bounce back healthy. Even then, don't see where he would fit. If he could also handle 3B/OF maybe there's a place, but he's been average at best at second so not really someone you sign for a role that would require good defense primarily coming off the bench. Plus someone is going to be fine with signing a recent All-Star second baseman to play his natural position.

No matter the circumstance and how illogical it may be every time a former player is available someone has to ask if we should get them. We could have 5 Clayton Kershaw’s in our rotation and someone would ask if we should pick up Jake Odorizzi.

Scooter Gennett is a 2B. His arm is probably worse than Khris Davis. He would have to hit a lot to put that kind of arm anywhere other than 2B

Can he play worse defense than Hiura?

Let's face it, the Brewers offense needs improvement. Scooter brings offense. Rosters expand in a few days. I say bring him up and let CC figure out where to play him.

Well, lets get specific. Gennett's OPS this year is .568 (small sample) and last year was .847. Even if you assume he would hit like last year, the only positions in the brewer's lineup where he would be a significant upgrade is CF and SS. If we are ignoring this years production and instead relying on last year, than I would rather have Cain in CF as when he is healthy he is likely able to produce similar to Gennett with superior defense.

That leaves it to SS. Scooter has never played SS at any professional level. I dont believe his offense will be enough to compensate for his bad defense at SS.

Hard pass

Looking at only current year stats is incredibly short-sighted. That's why people have track-records you go on. That's why you give people chances. And yes, Cain should be in CF. Grisham has been nice at times, but he needs to make some adjustments.

Easy to say bring him up when it isn’t your money. Pretty sure Gennett would cost a solid $1.5mil or so to take on. That’s a lot of money for a few weeks.

I have no interest in Gennett but I can assure you no one is paying him $1.5 million for the remainder of the season.

I see they are flat out releasing him now, still, waste of space.

On another note ironic Dubon is replacing him on the roster.

Kind of hard to believe. In 316 games with the Reds he hit 50 homeruns, scored 170 runs and drove in 194, with an OPS of .837, well on his way to cashing in tens of millions of dollars in guaranteed money as a free agent after 2019.

But now....he'll be looking at a one year prove it deal. terrible break for Gennett.

This has been a lost season for the guy, injuries have derailed him.

My bet is he comes back next year as a big time value for the team that takes a risk on him.

I think he will get a nice one year deal for this reason. Just a rough year sitting a huge chunk of it out, got rushed back so the Reds could flip him (about 30ABs in the minors after a huge layoff), thrown into a new environment, and then just didn't get it going.

He should be able to rebound.

No. But if Saladino is out til October the Brewers should pick an IF up who can play SS this week. They are very thin there.

If Spangenberg is average or better there on D they can probably make due...as long as there isnt an injury.

For now they have Arcia, Spangenberg, and Perez. Isn’t that enough?

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Not to mention in no universe is Scooter Gennett playing SS.

Gennett is a huge offensive upgrade over Perez and Spangenberg. And yes, he could play SS occasionally. Would I want him there for 140 games? no. Could he play there once or twice a month without ruining the team, yes.

Yes, lock him up to a 4-year deal. Get him in his prime. He will be a steal three years from now.

I’m confused are you vouching for him to be on the team in September at which point why is he playing SS ever?

Or are you vouching for him to be the utility guy next year at which point he will be playing SS/3B/cOF a lot where he, yes, will be a big burden to the team with poor range and an absolutely horrid arm.

Gennett couldn’t make a play in the hole at 2B...let alone SS. It would be simply terrifying to watch.

I dont know how good Spangenberg is at SS. If the team would be comfortable playing him at SS in a playoff situation then they are deep enough at SS. If not, then you are down to Arcia and Perez at SS. So you are one injury away from only having one SS.

This has nothing to do with Gennett though. I shouldnt have brought it up here.

I don’t see any place or sense for Scooter on this years roster other than 2b injury insurance and even that is a real stretch. What about next year? If you can get him on a minor league deal ok great. I don’t expect that to be on the table but I suppose you never know, better players have found themselves in that scenario before. But beyond that no thanks.

I think Gennett will be a great bounce back candidate for someone as a starting 2B and it is great people want to get such players for the Brewers....but sometimes you just gotta accept we don’t have room for them. Gennett, he just doesn’t fit.
