2019-08-27: Cardinals (Mikolas) at Brewers (Houser) [Brewers lose, 6-3]

Eye Black
Grisham going to need to pick it up a bit if he's going to see much time in September.

Yeah. The kid was so hot when he got called up and of course sits four or five days a week. Pinch hits lefty vs lefty a bunch and now is struggling. Brewers baseball. Catch it!!

When did Grisham sit 4 or 5 days a week since he got called up? He has been starting and playing pretty regularly but just hasn’t been hitting the last couple of weeks. An occasional home run and that’s about it.

He’s been sitting more than playing. He’s not seeing the ball, first real slump of the year, swinging threw balls that he normally hits.

I would not be surprised if Counsell decides to go somewhere else next year if Stearns doesn't want to address the pitching this off season. We know Counsell isn't Stearns hire and although they seem to get along fine we don't know whose idea this past off season was. Counsell is so punch drunk from this bullpen he has to demand resources be spent. if Stearns says lets go cheap with young guys and doesn't get real help ask to be set free. The guy would have a job the next day.

I think Stearns has done ok. I never would have thought that Burnes and Peralta would flop so bad that they can't even make the MLB roster much less start. I would have thought someone like Jacob Barnes or Taylor Williams could step up in the pen. It just never happened.

Yeah, Stearns has to be scratching his head a bit at the performances this season much like we are. There are some guys with some very good talent that just flat out performed like they were pulled out of the stands. Get Burnes mind right and there’s still probably something there. Won’t shock me to see him have a good 2020 season. The injuries to Knebel and Wahl were killers as well. That being said, Stearns has a history of crappy bullpen guys. He just needs to do a better job in that department too. Just because Stearns doesn’t sign flashy names like some want doesn’t mean he didn’t address the pitching though. That’s a false claim if there ever was one.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I saw houser batted then left the game at only 74 pitches. Is he hurt?

Counsell was spooked with the third time through the order coming up. He hit because of the short bench tonight.

And Houser gave up lots of hard contact in the 5th.....and really didn't have his command all night.....

Where would Counsell go? Nobody else is likely to offer him a manager’s job and I don’t see him leaving to take a coaching job. I think it’s more likely that he would be fired than leave voluntarily, and I doubt if he will be fired.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I know we talk about needing better pitching, and we do ! But our offense is s o inconsistent. Mediocre pitching can shut us down. Home run or bust , quite frankly I'm tired of it. Give me some hitters that can actually move a guy over from second instead of striking out or popping out cause we are constantly swing for the fences.

CC isn't going anywhere......he is under contract and Milwaukee is home......

He wants to win. If he and Stearns aren't on the same page then it could be an issue.

You are making up things to worry about.......by all accounts they have been on the same page....no reason at all to think they aren't........It's been a bad season......lots of blame to go around......it happens.

The 2019 Brewers are not the 2018 Brewers. You have to play to your strengths, you cannot pull a starter at 5IP and 70ish pitches and bullpen for the final four innings. I will take my chances with Houser going through the lineup a third time over four innings of blowpen. Yes the offense needs to score more than one run, but this is baseball, 1-1 games in the late innings are common for everyone. This is one that really needed to be won and really needed to be managed better.

This is sort of the year I expected last year. I think, in retrospect, it is so clear how many things had to go right to make that year so good. Burnes and Woody had to emerge as bullpen options. Aguilar had to go from possibke bench bat to all-star. Yelich had to be all-world. JJ had to find his early-career mojo. Hader had to be just about as unhittable as a reliever can be. Kratz. Chacin. Etc.

This year, almost the opposite has happened. Injuries and massive underperformance from key guys. Given the run differential, I almost wonder if this roster isn't OVERperforming thanks to an MVP bat and some young starting pitchers., as well as a still great Hader.

The good news is, next year is promising given Yelich, Hiura, Woodruff, Houser, and about 30 mil off the books.

Yeah I have to agree with you. The 3rd time through the order stuff is fine when you have an elite bullpen. When you have a terrible one and Houser has been your best lately and he's at 74 pitches, you might as well just let it ride with him.

Counsell is considered a top 5 manager. He would be hired in about 15 minutes.

Counsell is considered a top 5 manager. He would be hired in abo615 minutes.

People said the same things about Ron Roenicke and I don't think he's had a managerial gig since then.

Not saying you're wrong about where he may be considered, but I think the managerial hiring process is a little bit more complex than that and just impossible to predict.

I don’t think Counsell stinks, and I’m sure he would get a job of some type somewhere.

But, if he quit now do you think he’d get a manager’s job next year?
