Venezuelan Winter League

Recommended Posts

Apparently major league and minor league players will not be allowed to play in Venezuelan winter league. I know we have quite a few players who participate in that, and I believe Arcia has been a regular for a while.

I'd imagine the "keep politics out of sports" crowd will be pretty silent about this.

Without trying to delve into the politics, is this legal? What happens if some players says screw it you cant tell me what to do and goes home to play?
Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

As we stated last winter, not sure why someone would consider going there. It's not a politically-motivated position, but a safety issue. I'd imagine most Venezuelan players are trying to get their families out of the country for safety.

The legality is highly questionable but since most of the foreign players will want to return to the US on work visas, even if they have the legal right to do so spending months trying to sort out visa issues is not good especially since MLB says they want to stay out of it.

I would think it's very much legal for guys that have contracts for 2020. The league probably can't enforce anything but their MLB teams certainly could. There has to be language in every contract that says the player needs team permission to play anywhere in the offseason.

I'm not a legal expert by any stretch, but the Brewers specifically have pulled players from leagues or prevented players from playing. I know they've done this with Junior Guerra and Arcia specifically, probably plenty of others. They also didn't allow Gallardo to pitch for Mexico in the WBC one year. I think it's safe to assume each team is going to enact those restrictions to all their players based on MLB's stance. It makes sense for MLB to issue an announcement versus all 30 teams making their own announcement.
