Pay / perks when getting shuttled to AAA

AJOHNSON104

I tried looking on Google with little success, so reaching out to all you experts.

What happens when a player (like Aaron Wilkerson) gets called up on Sunday, pitches in a game, and is sent to AAA on Monday as it relates to pay, benefits, perks, etc.?

Specifically, do they have to be active for a game to earn a day in MLB service credit? I'm guessing that he earns 1 day pay and credit towards pension, but he was technically on the roster for parts of 2 days.

I would suspect that the MLB team has to cover all travel expenses, but are any other things affected? I know the MLB salary is pretty good, and guys on 40 man rosters do OK, but it must be real difficult for the guys who get shuttled back and forth repeatedly and wondered what the economic impact of it all was. I heard once that when a player is called up the MLB team has to cover his hotel, food, etc. at MLB rates for a minimum of 3 days, but not sure if that is true.

I believe it is 7 days of per diem. But that amount is only like $33 a day since the last collective bargaining agreement It used to be a few hundred a day.

A minor leaguer makes about $3300 for every game he is with the big lg. club unless his contract is more. They have to be on the 25 man roster to get the pay unless the club agrees to something else. Per diem went down from $99 to $33, but every team has a buffet table after the game, so that's basically for breakfast and lunch.

Gotta be weird being one of those many players who get called up once or twice in their entire career. You get to the top, maybe even get in a game, and spend years toiling away in the minors. I can't imagine what it's like knowing you got that close to having such a drastically different life. It's no wonder so many ex players have a certain bitterness toward the game or feel like they never got their shot.

Don't the players chip in for the training table? Or has that cost been taken over by the team? Or am I thinking of the dugout equipment manager type guy?

Thing is, with this new trend of bullpen shuttle more players than ever are getting their shot. If they're good enough they'll stay, that's on them. I think most players understand that.

Video that may answer the initial question pretty well. Also a great channel by Matt Antonelli, a former first round pick of the Padres who had a cup of coffee in the majors and several years in the minors. Baseball people who aren't familiar, his channel will keep you entertained for hours.
