Mutual Option Optimism

balsamlaker
This may be overly optimistic, but it wouldn't surprise me if Grandal and Moustakas don't get better options out there compared to their Brewers 2020 options. Grandal's option makes him the third highest paid catcher in MLB and he has not had as strong of season in 2019 and Moustakas' option would put him in the top 10 at third base after two disappointing trips to the free agent market.

I’m good with us going different routes. Would love more youth on this team.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Soria declined a $10 million option and signed a 2 year / $15 million deal. Moustakas declined a $15 million option and signed a deal for $7 million with a $3 million buyout on the option year. Just saying the baseball free agent landscape is changing a great deal. Who would have ever thought Keuchel and Kimbrel last as long before getting deals done.

How many threads do we need on this? It makes zero sense for Moustakas and I’d say Grandal is a pipe dream.

Moustakas makes $8mil if he picks up that option. A $2mil pay cut from this year...that is not happening. The Brewers would take him back at that paltry amount all week long at worst...so what is he risking? Essentially nothing by declining.

Now Grandal...didn’t have a market last year. $16mil isn’t the worst if he doesn’t think his market will be strong. He has been pretty bad for awhile now. Certainly not helping his cause as the season winds down. Still, odds he takes a mutual option and doesn’t test the market...very unlikely. At worst someone would pony up similar money for one year. Though he has the risk that the Brewers could move on taking away a possible option to sign with. As $16mil is a lot of money and we may put it towards pitching if he declines.

Hasn't worked for Moustakas each of the last two offseasons... why would he get a big contract now?

Well, he's having a better season and he may have adjusted his ask now being two years older.

There's also the fact that it's a particularly weak FA class. There are a couple nice DH's and then Rendon, Donaldson. I'm sure there are a couple other solid FA's, but overall, it's one of the worst years in a while.

Much stronger FA pitching class.

And exactly what front line starter is going to take a below market deal to pitch for Milwaukee? Because the Brewers are never shelling out the money for a top starting pitcher.

And frankly, they likely will cut payroll after the season and spend 2020 retooling. This year’s squad has to be a let down in the eyes of the front office; and how do you go about replacing the likely 160+ runs scored 60+ homeruns and 160+ RBI when Moustakas and Grandal leave
