2019 Green Bay Packers Season Thread

Yeah I don't think the home and away alternates. I believe that's randomly set once the opponents are known.

It's always a formula, home and away, set years in advance. Except the two teams that finish equal in that division, but even those are known home and away as well.

Snapper, I’m not delusional about Rodgers’ abilities in 2019, but you don’t win 12 games by accident. If anything, Jimmy G has a better Pro Bowl resume than the 3 guys you mentioned (Prescott, Cousins, and Wentz). Prescott has the best offense line and best running back in football and is sitting at 7 wins. Cousins lost to Rodgers twice. If I had to take one NFC QB to win a playoff game (not named Wilson or Brees), I’d take Rodgers. That’s 2019 Rodgers and it’s not even close.

But I digress because the Pro Bowl is silly. :)

Merry Christmas to you!

I hope the schedule maker has a sense of humor and makes the Jaguars come to Green Bay in December next year after making the Packers playing at Jacksonville in Week 1 of 2016.

I was at that 2016 game. For the love of gawd, NEVER AGAIN. My then 76-yo father nearly passed out 45 minutes prior to kickoff.

In reference to upthread, opposite conference opponents are determined years in advance. My brother moved to JAX in 2013, so in '15 I knew there would be a game there in '16 and a chance to visit (mind that JAX draws poorly at home, so much they voluntarily offer a home game to London each year). Looking to go back in 2024, if the game isn't in September.

Also referencing upthread, my brother offered to join us for a game in ATL or TB. If you do the math, any given season offers a 50% of happening. If you know how the formula works, you can plan a road trip. I believe the formula is on the NFL site.

I just thought of this today... But wouldn’t it be at least a LITTLE bit comical to play the Ravens in the Super Bowl and watch Blake Martinez trying to chase down Lamar Jackson? :laughing

Absolutely not! I don't want to be laughing during the Super Bowl unless we're winning.

Worth noting that Rodgers quietly restructured his contract this week, freeing up $11.4 million in cap room for 2020.

That effectively lowers his cap number for 2020 by spreading out the $14 million bonus evenly over 5 years (2019-2023). It’s nice they were able to make use of the remaining 2019 cap space. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did the same thing next year and kept pushing money out. If they can squeeze one championship out of this roster, they can go 0-16 in 2023 and you won’t hear me complain once.

I was looking at upcoming Packer free agents after reading this and found Bakhtiari supposedly has an opt out clause after this season. I can't pin it down in any contract details I can find so I think it may be some bad info that a few different web sites have picked up, the stories are all from a few months ago in the offseason.

"David Bakhtiari is just 27 years old. The four-year, $48 million extension he signed with the Green Bay Packers in the spring of 2016 contains an opt-out clause following the 2019 season."

Have to think this Rodgers restructure means that they will indeed go all in soon to get another Super Bowl. The quick turn around this season sure makes next year look like a good season to do it, especially with all the players we will have due after next season.

I like it! Free up that money & get Amari Cooper paid! Just think what this offense could be with Rodgers, Adams, Cooper, & Jones! Packers only having one receiving threat is a kill right now.

I agree with you that it's bad info. Don't believe this. I've seen numerous smaller writers mistake the "potential out" listed for players on Spotrac as an opt-out clause when it is in fact not and then carelessly report it as such. It hasn't been reported from any major team source. Has anyone ever even heard of an NFL player having and exercising an opt out clause?

Bakhtiari's contract, to my belief, runs through the 2020 season after which point he'll be a free agent.

These 2nd tier writers from 247 sports or whatever else tend to just grab something they think they know and just run with it even when they really don't.

Yeah Bak would certainly be opting out if he had the opportunity and it would be reported pretty widely as he would be one of the top 5 guys available for sure. The Packers would tag him. Now that you mention it I can't think of an NFL player having an opt out clause, it's all about the guaranteed money and why would a team give them the opportunity unless the player gave up some of those guarantees? That 4th year is gold to the Packers value wise.

Particularly with a strike appearing more likely by the day following the 2020 season, next year is the year to go all out.

Tony Brown released, I never thought much of him but seems like the team liked him. The Patrick contract makes you wonder if they plan on moving Billy Taylor out to RT next year after they lose Bulaga.

That has crossed my mind. Elgton Jenkins could potentially kick outside as well. He has experience at tackle in college. Plenty big and athletic enough too.

With as well as EJ played at G, I think it would be foolish to move him. He has ProBowl potential.

Patrick's extension surprised me, but I suppose if he is starting RG next year it makes some sense. Otherwise, it seems like an expensive backup at G.

$1.8M/year isn't expensive for a good backup. It's insurance in case Taylor has to kick out to tackle and Madison isn't ready to start the season. We're not far removed from complaining about UDFA's as backups.

It's also insurance in case they move on from Linsley, who has a $10.2M cap number for 2020 and is in the last year of his deal. Linsley is good, but not sure if he's worth $10.2M. Unlikely, but possible.

Raven Greene was a full participant in practice. I don't know how much help he'll be but they missed him on defense early in the year - particularly against the run. Hope he can provide a little bit of help.

I saw this too. I thought the defense took a notable step back once he got hurt. Is it possible he steps in for meaningful playing time? Or is he more of a special teams guy given he hasn't played in so long?

Considering Campbell stepped into a large role immediately after being activated from the PUP list, I would imagine that Greene would be up for some significant playing time. His return potentially makes the defense much better

Yikes. Hadn't realized his cap number was that high. Considering they'd only carry a $2mil dead cap number if they cut him, that seems possible if they can't work out an extension to re-work that number.

It always puzzled me why Linsley got a big extension while the Packers let JC Tretter go to the Browns for much less money. Linsley is whatever. He's ok. I think he's pretty replaceable. Tretter is better than Linsley.

Also, Bryan Bulaga deserves a shout out. For all the crap he takes, the guy played in every single game this season and played extremely well. He's just completing a 5 year, 33M deal and he was an absolute bargain at that rate even with the missed injury time.
