2019 Green Bay Packers Season Thread

homer
Looks like heavy rain for the game today, if not thunderstorms. That would be awesome to see.

They won’t play in lightning so hopefully just rain.

I love crazy weather games...usually prefer it not be the Packers though. The other day I saw highlights from an older Eagles game where they played in heavy snow to start and then had quite a few inches of snow to deal with on the ground after that. Worst snow game I can ever recall, but man it made for one wacky game.

I'm not sure what Eagles game you're referring to, but do you remember or have you seen any video of the famous Eagles-Bears fog game? I don't know how they completed passes as you just couldn't see anything. It was almost comical.

I'm fairly convinced that Seattle might just not be very good. Their offense has been smoke-and-mirrors since Lynch left a few years back.

They’ve won 1 playoff game since he came off his rookie contract. Even Aaron Rodgers has won more in that same span. Good QB, decent guy, but overrated IMHO.

Packers play on Thursday this week and then will get 10 days off before they play the Lions on Monday night football. Kind of like a mini bye week quarter of the way through the season. Then they have their official bye week during week 11. Definitely like how those two breaks are spaced out for this season.

Also an extra couple days after week 2 by getting the Thursday opener.

They play Dallas before the Lions, so an extended break before Dallas, then an extra day for the Lions.

It's pretty amazing to see the Packers fortuitous health thus far in the season as well. I'm used to a few guys going down by now. But so far, it's really just been Greene and Burks and both should be back. Greene from what I've read...though it wasn't exactly definitive, sounded like he would be out 6-8 weeks.

Burks should be back relatively soon.

Ahh, thanks. I’m screwed up on my dates. Still a nice 9 day layoff before taking on Dallas.

The whole underrated/overrated thing is tough. Is Aaron Rodgers overrated right now? Probably based on what he's done recently.

But where is Wilson "ranked" by most people? I'd say most people place him in that 6-9 range. I think that's fair. That dude's a magician in the pocket. He HAS been their offense. They've never been able to develop an offensive line for him and he makes some incredible plays.

Right now I'd put...in no particular order.

Mahomes

Brady

Brees

Rodgers

Rivers

I think I'm probably taking Wilson next. There are several QB's who could pass him up this year or at least close the gap. Lamar Jackson has looked so much better than I thought, but still can't throw like an NFL QB needs to.

Matty Ice...should be a nickname for how cold he gets at times.

Big Ben is in that group.

Dak I just think has the perfect job in the NFL. I think if you put a guy like Josh Allen there, that team would have an even bigger upside.

Carson Wentz has the ability to take that next step, but since he hurt his ACL, he hasn't.

Jimmy G, Watson, Baker Mayfield..are some guys who could pass him with another really strong year. I still don't trust Jimmy G even though he just wins(11-2 as a starter now). Watson meanwhile looks like a stud, but he has the Olympic 4X100 track team out there, PLUS Hopkins, arguably the best WR'er in the NFL.

So I'd say coming into the season he was behind Arod/Mahomes/Brees/Brady/Big Ben/Luck and Rivers(who I believe is chronically underrated, maybe because his throwing motion looks just atrocious).

The penalty challenge rule has officially become a complete disaster/joke. Yesterday pretty much summed it up. Call happens, Mr.Expert chimes in saying it is textbook like the recent video they were all shown, and it is 100% a penalty that should be called. Referee comes back in "Call Stands". Another challenge happens and basically the same is said that is definitely a penalty they should be have been called...but since the one before wasn't called this one won't be. The cherry on the top was the last play. The entire purpose of the rule was because of a late miss call. So in real time the INT play looks like it could have been a missed penalty (lots of contact). Do they go to make sure it was indeed a clean play? No, of course not.

They aren't even going to use this review rule inside 2 minutes...at least very very rarely. If Rodgers is marching down the field, no timeouts, and 50 seconds left do you think they are going to stop the game to go check a offensive PI? Yah right...so what is the point? The challenge is being used for all the wrong reasons and is very unlikely to be used for its intention in the specific time it becomes so important.

Also, go re-watch the wheel route TD to the RB by Philly last night. I was at the game and caught this live as it was in my end of the field, saw one quick replay on the board. I said since it's a scoring play it should be reviewed, of course it wasn't. But their WR just straight up takes out the LB supposed to be covering the RB. As you've all said, last night showed to a T how horrible of a rule it is and that it should just go away. If you're going to have it in place and still get all this stuff wrong (due to how subjective it is) then just don't have it all and let the randomness of luck and how borderline calls can go your way or against you just continue on like it has forever.

Note: Genius play design though as you know refs are going to miss this 98% of the time

I said it last night, but you could probably find a penalty on almost any play. For all the off the ball/play penalties they call think about how many away from the ball/play they miss.

I think they overreacted to that play last year. In all reality there really wasn't that big of an outcry over it. To instill a rule that allows you to challenge a play, but only 'blatant' ones will be overturned is pretty much creating a disaster. That is like if MLB would have started challenges at 1B, but is had to be by a complete step (blatant). If you are going to go through the time of allowing challenges you gotta take the good with the bad. Big or small mistake you should be overturning it. Why go to the monitor, know it is a PI, but because it is moderate we will keep the call on the field...it wasn't excessive.

I mean come on NFL. When will you learn?

Good post. Yea in general NFL has over managed and over reffed themselves into hurting their product.

Another way to look at these calls last night. If any of the three big ones (non reversal on the jumping WR, last play pick, wheel route) happens without the new replay system I simply go "ah shoot, could've gone our way, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't." And the breaks will even out in the long run. None were so ridiculous that you couldn't understand a live ref missing them. But, once you put in a replay for it well then you should get it right and do it correctly.

For the non reversal, I don't know how even the most biased Eagles fan wouldn't have accepted that when it gets overturned and said "yea, that sucks but yea he did it". It was basically just like Rams/Saints play that led to the rule but without straight up knocking him down.

You want to know what this is? It is giving the refs a huge amount of power to control the outcome of a game. That was exactly what I thought when they implemented the rule and this is exactly what happened yesterday. It’s all about control and giving the refs the ability to control the outcome of games.

I’m half-joking, but I wish close calls were reviewed by 32 fans (one from each NFL team) in a sports bar. They have 1-minute to lock in their vote based on a half dozen replays. The bartender breaks all ties. It would make for good television and I don’t think it could be any worse than the current replay system.

Honestly, that probably gets to the most just/accurate outcome. Having two guys making the decision, one who's crew likely blew it in the first place, and Al Riveron who will never admit that his guys can be wrong sometimes, is just stupid. Or at least the results have indicated that it's stupid.

I would probably require something like a 20-12 vote to overturn to meet the "clear and obvious" standard, but other than that, I think this would be a major upgrade from the current system. Which is sad.

It's still better. What would also be better is on the closest plays, literally draw out of a hat. Dumb luck would be right more often than these doofus officials on the closest plays.

Made my annual trip to Lambeau for the Eagles game. Not much to add to the ridiculous pass interference discussion. Officiating in the NFL is the worst of any pro sport.

I have a suggestion for the Packers regarding the fan experience. Can they please, please get rid of that juvenile PA cheerleader crap? I can't stand a guy insulting my football intelligence by screaming at me to get loud. Fans know when to get loud. They don't need some idiot who sounds like he's on meth telling them to get loud. Give me the down and distance only. That would make the game so much more enjoyable.
