Box: DSL Brewers/Indians 7, DSL Dodgers "Shoemaker" Squad 5

Nice pick-me-up win for this group.

The only Brewer pitcher was RH reliever Deybi Arias, with a 1-2-3 7th.

Elian Gonzalez, DH'ing here, tripled twice and drove in three.

RF Jeicor Cristian was 3-for-3 with a walk, including a double.

I feel bad for the Dodgers' starter, good season numbers despite his last name.

Box: DSL Cubs #2 Squad 7, DSL Brewers 0

The Cubs on Friday, sheesh (as I type it's in the 6th at Wrigley)...

Two RHP's signed on June 15th (at the tail end of the 2018 international signing pool year) made their debuts in the Dominican Summer League Friday 8/2 --

16-year-old (17 on 8/9) Mexican native Ramon Carrasco and 17-year-old (18 on 8/22) Dominican republic native Alexander Cornielle

NOTE: It is rare for the Brewers to formally debut post-July 2nd signees in the same summer. These two players are not part of the 2019 pool.

Welcome to pro ball!

DSL Cubs2 Bottom of the 5th

Pitching Change: Ramon Carrasco replaces Juan Gomez.

Rafael Herrera flies out to left fielder Juan Frias in foul territory.

Felix Stevens grounds out, shortstop Alberis Ferrer to first baseman Erys Bautista.

Christhian Espinal strikes out swinging.

DSL Cubs2 Bottom of the 6th

Pitching Change: Alexander Cornielle replaces Ramon Carrasco.

Pablo Aliendo walks.

Orlando Zapata walks. Pablo Aliendo to 2nd.

Starlin Mateo grounds into a force out, shortstop Alberis Ferrer to second baseman Joneiker Ponce de Leon. Pablo Aliendo to 3rd. Orlando Zapata out at 2nd. Starlin Mateo to 1st.

Lizardo Ruiz flies into a sacrifice double play, right fielder Alejandro Marte to first baseman Erys Bautista. Pablo Aliendo scores. Starlin Mateo out at 1st.

***

Three singles for 2B Joneiker Ponce de Leon, that's kind of "his thing' - 46 of 49 hits for singles, a unique .291/.327/.310 line.

Man, Lazar is having an awesome year.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Encouraging pitching performances all around tonight.

Good to see Supak dominate after the home run issues in his first start.

Perdomo strikes out five in two innings. He is really throwing well and not giving up a ton of walks lately. Think you have to add him to the roster to keep him around.

Lazar Deals a 1-0 Win for Wisconsin

Rattlers top Clinton behind eight strikeouts from Lazar

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Are you like me, and see Mike Fiers' over the top effectiveness without blazing speed in Max Lazar? Lazar now with a 1.42 ERA, 89 K's and just 12 walks in 63.1 IP, and as Kyle Lobner notes in the audio below, how is Lazar not in MLB Pipeline's Brewers' Top 30?

And the big difference between Fiers and Lazar, Max is exactly four years younger than Fiers when they were at the same level. So much time to continue his growth.

AUDIO via the Rattler Radio Soundcloud: "In Friday night's postgame podcast, Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner talk about the Timber Rattlers pitching. They go through the turning points of the Wisconsin win, share some stats, and talk about the performances by Ethan Small, who made his Timber Rattlers debut on Friday, and Max Lazar, who struck out eight over six shutout innings. Pitching Coach Jim Henderson gets in on the conversation as well."

Man, Lazar is having an awesome year.

Took a dive into the numbers and WOW. Does anyone that's seen him up there have a scouting report they could share? Seems like a guy you'd like to ramp up to 120-130 innings next year.

Fangraphs have this blurb:

Lazar sits just 86-89 but his deceptive, funky, over-the-top delivery combined with the extreme length of his stride down the mound make him an uncomfortable at-bat for opposing hitters. If there's an Oliver Drak delivery comp in the minors, it's Lazar, and he can somehow turn over a changeup from this slot. It's hard to say if this sort of deception will hold water at upper levels but Lazar may yet grow into more velocity.

With him not really being on the prospect radar before now, being an 11th round HS pick, without loud tools and who didn't put up very good numbers in his first years, there often isn't much public scouting material to be found. I would think that 7.5:1 K/BB ratio should start attracting some more attention soon though.
