Another blow up for Nelson: 0.2 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 BB. Hard to watch. They'll have to make some move with him in a few weeks.

Zavolas with another quality start: 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 8 K. Nothing left to prove in A+ ball, but he's been so effective he's at 129 IP versus 108 combined in college + MiLB last year, so probably doesn't make sense to move him up this year if he's only got a couple starts left.

San Antonio Pre-Game Media Notes

***

Box: Sacramento 3, San Antonio 2

Devin Williams stranded two of Jimmy Nelson's baserunners, otherwise Nelson's line would be even rougher...

David Freitas on base three more times, there is no end to his magic, it's truly been an amazing run with no lulls of any kind.

Nelson's 30-day minor league rehab began on 7/21, so unless they pull the plug on the rehab itself, looks like Monday August 26th may be decision day. It's so close to September 1st and open 40-man roster call-ups, looks like a true decision will wait all the way until late fall -- whether to offer arbitration.

Whew, much needed in every aspect. As he should be, RHP Noah Zavolas in the featured photo at the link above.

AUDIO via the Rattler Radio Soundcloud: "In Thursday's postgame podcast, Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner go through the post-mortem of a difficult Timber Rattlers loss, go through a few stats and notes, and preview Ethan Small's Midwest League debut. Matt Erickson has a few comments and a tip of the cap to the LumberKings."

As noted within, rough fate for new Rattler RHP Joey Matulovich (unearned runs) after otherwise strong work.

18-year-old Venezuelan RHP Yostin Villalobos has had a nice rookie summer (1.19 WHIP).

Converted outfielder, now RHP, Francis Casado has made ten short relief appearances in 2019, his peripherals are better than his ERA shows.

Five lonely singles (four by Brewers), three walks (all by Brewers).

Box: AZL Padres #1 Squad 5, AZL Brewers Blue 4

Non-drafted middle infielder (shortstop here) Danny Casals singled three times and drove in a run.

2018 9th round speedster OF Arbert Cipion has made big strides since last year, although the strikeout rate is still not pretty. On base three times here to lift his OBP to .359 and OPS to .740, and he stole his 17th base in 23 tries.

Do you want to talk adjustments? Let's point out 19-year-old 2nd-year-pro, smallish (listed at 5'9", 147) Dominican native RHP Jhoan Cruz

First three outings: 12.2 IP, 23 H, 18 ER, 3 BB, 12 K

Most recent five outings: 22.2 IP, 21 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 19 K

Box: AZL Giants "Black" Squad 10, AZL Brewers Gold 0

Game had nothing to do with recent trade acquisition Ray Black coming over from the Giants, but we're just looking for something to distract from the final score.

Actually, there's this, isn't there, Brent Suter?

AZL Giants Black Top of the 1st

Grant McCray strikes out swinging.

Dilan Rosario strikes out swinging.

Jairo Pomares strikes out swinging.

Welcome back for the first time since 2017 to LHP Drake Owenby, the 2015 12th round pick out of the University of Tennessee. First game back since Tommy John surgery last August 9th, so just under 12 months. I bet he's made a wonderful friendship with fellow southpaw Suter, as their recoveries virtually mirrored each other.

Owenby's inning did not go well as the 2nd inning game log will show, but congrats on officially getting back on a mound.

Brewers sign 23-year-old non-drafted RHP Seth Beard out of Methodist University (Fayetteville, NC) and assign him to the Maryvale Gold team. Beard had most recently been pitching for the Fayetteville SwampDogs in the local collegiate wood bat league.

Here is Beard's collegiate bio page. (Beard does not have a beard.)

Pro debut --

AZL Giants Black Top of the 7th

Pitching Change: Seth Beard replaces Brayan Salaya.

Jairo Pomares lines out to center fielder Larry Ernesto.

Garrett Frechette strikes out swinging.

Matt Malkin triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Larry Ernesto. Jin-De Jhang scores.

Nine games in Maryvale thus far for rehabbing Timber Rattlers OF Pablo Abreu.
