Jordan Lyles is Back! (Cody Ponce is gone; Diplan DFA'd)

This shows why it's a mistake to always sit on your hands until the final hours before a trade deadline especially if you need pitching help. They were limited to guys who were available to pitch Tuesday or Wednesday. Woodruff's been out over a week and they were totally unprepared for another pitcher going down. The pressure's on Stearns now to get a starter that's actually going to be an improvement over what they have. He's not shown the ability to when there's interest from multiple other teams.

I’d say Stearns hasn’t shown the willingness—as opposed to ability—to get involved in a bidding war. He looks for his players at his price, I expect. That being said, one could argue the need for pitching on this team is more of a genuine need than it has been in years past, with the Brewers literally running out of healthy bodies to throw out there. Maybe these injuries will change his approach.

It takes two to tango and the brewers are not the only team looking for pitching help. It could just as easily be the sellers who are holding things up. And where is this interest from multiple teams coming from? I don't put any stock in a rumor at the deadline. That is just as easily agent posturing for a client as it is an actual rumor.

The front office knows Lyles from last year, and so their apparent belief that he's better than his recent outings (He did have a sub-4 ERA entering July) should have more support behind it than is usually the case. I thought he looked good whenever I saw him last year.

Ponce is a 25 yo relief prospect who is in his 3rd year at AA. One of like 6-7 relievers in AA/AAA who are rule 5-eligible in the offseason. FG don't even have him listed as a 35 FV anymore. Some of those relievers might make it, most won't. If Cody is one of them, good for him and I wish him all the best. But I don't have any problem whatsoever with the trade. From a pure value standpoint you could argue that the $1.7m saved is worth more. The decision to not exercise the option had to be made early in the offseason, and I don't think that the injury to Knebel and the poor performance in the rotation of all three of Chacin, Peralta and Burnes was predictable. I was a bit surprised by Brewers letting him go, but I certainly understand why they did it.

Please tell me who you are cutting from the opening day pitching staff so that you may pay Jordan Lyles $2.5 million dollars.

Either Barnes or Williams. Both had options. Also would have made the Alex Wilson experience unnecessary.

If you foresaw Knebel and Jeffress getting injured during spring training, requiring the need for the Alex Wilson experience, I'd like to know what Wednesday's Powerball numbers are. Split it with you, 60% you, 40% me.

Who could foresee pitching injuries in spring training.

If a team wants to pick up Diplan, does he need to go to the 40 man roster? If so, we could take him back if all other teams decline to do that, right?

Yes, if a team claims him he'll go on their 40-man roster. Because of that I think there's a decent chance he passes through waivers and remains in the organization.

I don't think he was limited to guys who could start the next two days. The team could just as easily went one bullpen day and use a spot starter like Houser the other. They don't even really need a long start out of the spot starter given the way they option players in the pen. They could also send down a position player to cover more innings if things got ugly. They will need to figure out the starter position in the next week but they could have got through two games then have a few more to figure things out. As it is I think this move was made more with an eye to the pen than it was just to get through tomorrow and Wednesday.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

For only the bargain cost of $2.5 million every year we could sign or keep an extra vet like Lyles to protect against what you say are predictable injuries. Then, 10 years from now we’ll have basically lit $25 million on fire over a decade for replacement-level insurance policies that would’ve been worth it maybe once in that span.

Sounds like any insurance plan, ever.

Pirates acquired RHP Cody Ponce from the Brewers for RHP Jordan Lyles.

Ponce has registered a decent 3.29 ERA and 44/12 K/BB ratio in 38 1/3 innings of relief this season at the Double-A level. The 25-year-old right-hander was selected 55th overall in the 2015 MLB Draft. He could factor into the bullpen mix in Pittsburgh at some point in 2020.

Pittsburgh promised him a rotation spot. So the Brewers sticking him in the pen probably wasn’t his first choice.

Milwaukee had a club option on Lyles.

If I remember correctly, the Brewer's option was actually for more than what he ended up signing at Pitt for. Wasn't it $3.5M?

if the brewers try to outright diplan to the minor leagues and he is claimed, he is added to the claiming team's 40-man roster, who can decide to recall him or option him to one of their minor league affiliates.

if diplan goes unclaimed, he can be outrighted to one of the brewers' minor league affiliates. he has not been outrighted before, so he will be forced to accept the assignment and remain in the organization. if outrighted, he can become a minor league free agent after this season.

what you say are predictable injuries.

Yah, pitchers get injured in spring training. I don’t think this is controversial.

It’s not...but when you lose 2 of your assumed stud bullpen arms I think you are severely overvaluing how much difference a swing man is going to make. Heck, they even covered themselves somewhat quickly by getting a comparable/better pitcher in Gio and HE got hurt.

Just not their year in injury/performance of pitchers.

If we're going to make moves at this point I'm happy they're nothingburgers like this. The deck is stacked against the Brewers right now I guess it's time you just keep Moose and Grandal on and hope some guys like this get flukey at the right time.

And if unfortunately they don't, you have Sept to use to try and get a cleaner picture of what you've got in some guys like Burnes, Peralta(I still want to see him given another shot as a starter as well, but he may "just" be a reliever), Grisham, etc....

I actually liked Ponce though. I thought he could be a part of the BP in the upcoming years. Not that I'm upset about this deal...they do need someone to start games.

I think Ponce can be a middle reliever in the bigs. They needed Lyles because they are desperate for an arm who can eat up chunks of innings. He’s got a live arm but his command is up and down. I get the move. I’m not optimistic as to where this season is headed so we might as well try to maintain our minors as much as possible.

Judging by the article in the Athletic today, it seems as though they are far from done. Hopeful to acquire two starters and at least a reliever as well. Article also said Dubon is drawing "significant" interest. Mentioned the Brewers also have the trade chips to get just about any deal done they choose.

There are plenty of pitchers out there that have posted some mediocre numbers, but I definitely would have wanted to pick up one that was pitching well as of late. Lyles has been beyond awful. Has a 10.00 ERA in his last 7 starts. They could have recalled Corbin Burnes if they wanted production like that.

I wonder what the White Sox are demanding for Nova? Nova has equally ugly season numbers, but at least he's been pitching better lately.

Do you really believe this? Do you really think Stearns could deal for....Syndergaard hypothetically, but then find out that because he's not available right away to make an emergency start-he wouldn't do it?

And Stearns has shown the ABILITY to not overpay and panic when multiple teams are interested in a pitcher. Yu Darvish anyone? Craig Kimbrel?

I want to know all these pitchers that he wasn't able to acquire who look good even in retrospect. Pitchers that were realistically expected to be good.
