Any time you can trade assets for a player you could've just signed in the off-season you just gotta do it.

This was discussed in the Lyles thread that there was no room for him on the major league roster.

I'm assuming the assets to acquire him will be, "Rest of Contract Taken On" who probably is the 3rd string catcher for Biloxi.

#Brewers acquiring Jordan Lyles from the #Pirates in exchange for Cody Ponce, sources tell The Athletic.

Man, he looked so promising his first year with the Mudcats and then just sort of stalled out.

These are the deals I expect. A bunch of please get hot at the right time players.

Worth it if Lyles can give any sort of quality pitching performances until some of the injured starters return. It seems somewhat unlikely that Ponce would have been given a 40-man roster spot next year. Getting a major league pitcher--even a mediocre one--to meet an extreme need for that price seems almost a no-brainer.

Can move to bullpen if starters come back healthy as well. Doubt Ponce was in consideration for next year's 40 man roster.

August rotation--Chase, ZDavies, Houser, Lyles, and....Gio if he is ready or call up AWilkerson?

IL rotation--Chacin, Woody, Suter, JNelson, and possibly Gio

agreed and its the smart thing to do. I dont see the point in trading away top assets to make a run, unless you think you can catch lightening in a bottle and somehow win your division and then beat the dodgers and braves in the playoffs.

I would by no means think ATL is unbeatable, you have a great chance in that one. Then you cross your fingers the WC knocks of LAD, it's baseball. Crazy stuff happens all the time. You have to try when you're this close, MLB post season is by far the flukiest and most likely for underdogs winning of any non one game playoff system

Giving up a player for someone you willing let go 7 months ago...sheesh.

OK so first of all everyone that has said this so far (and will continue to on this thread)...

Put yourself in December 2018 mindset. Assume that you at least understand the acquisition of Claudio. Remember that you had high hopes for Burnes.

Please tell me who you are cutting from the opening day pitching staff so that you may pay Jordan Lyles $2.5 million dollars.

I'll hang up and listen.

Kinda bummed considering it seemed like Ponce might be an interesting bullpen piece for next year, but honestly we needed a low cost arm right now, with really no good AAA options.

Lyles has been bad for a while now but it's only been worst against *checks notes* THE CUBS AND CARDINALS!

Kinda guessing this is the cheapest-best option we had available to us for Tuesday, and he's really only here to make 5 or 6 starts before we can get Gio/Woodruff/Chacin/Suter back.

Instead of laying him $2.5M to be lousy for us for a full season we will pay him 250k to hopefully find something.
