"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

From the Baseball Trade Values Twitter account...

Here's the deal: Aquino ($0.1M) and Blanco ($0.8M) for Diekman ($2.6M). Our system does accept this trade.

The value gap is likely explained by Diekman's mutual option - we have him at 1.5 years of control, but evaluating him as a pure rental makes this much closer.

Edit: They’ve issued the following update...

CORRECTION: Our $2.6M value for Diekman assumes his 2020 mutual option is bought out.

That value gap can be partially explained by the ~month between Diekman's last update (7/1) and the time of the trade, meaning Oakland receives a month less control than the value includes

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Ummmmm….instead of trying to validate their website by trying to make out every trade to be even according to their numbers, why don't they just say the Royals sold low on Diekman because I'd bet that's what 95% of MLB fans out there are thinking right now.

It does make you wonder, at this cost why Stearns wouldn't have been involved(maybe he was, who knows)?? But it would fill an obvious need. Also, this should show that you never know what it takes to make a deal. Some GM's might like certain prospects more than another GM. Prices were said to be "exorbitant". This isn't exorbitant at all, at least for Diekman. Some GM's may just like dealing with other GM's more than others. There are so many moving pieces when it comes to deals...you can't just say the Brewers don't have the prospects for such and such, when in reality, we just don't know that. This almost makes it seem like Stearns is holding out for something bigger, otherwise they could have easily beaten this offer and again, to the outside it would fill an obvious need.

Or is it possible that Stearns really had no idea this was happening? Some of you people amaze me thinking that the brewers are aware of every move being made prior to the actual trade being done.

I think the idea that Stearns had no idea this guy was on the market is not comforting. That's kind of his job.

Seems more likely he just didn't like the asking price. We don't know which Brewer prospects it would have taken.

The delay between when the Diekman trade first broke and when the return was finally announced allowed for lots of speculating from Royals fans on which top A’s prospects they were getting back in return. Some disappointment when they realized they were getting two players outside of the A’s top 30 (at least according to MLB.com). The difference between the expectation of the fan base and actual return was pretty significant. Although, I remember some similar sentiments in the immediate moments after the Adam Lind trade was announced and obviously Freddy Peralta ended up working out pretty well from that one.

This is my impression. Likely targeting a better bullpen arm than Diekman. It only took a 26 year old AA outfielder and generic rookie leaguer, so I'd guess Stearns is willing to pay more to get more. Not going to have the talent to get a Yates or anything, but there's a wide middle ground between him and Diekman.

Or that Diekman's is overrated by most fans because his K rate is offset by his walk rate (5.0, 5.2, 8.4 each of the last three years).
