Victor Castaneda has excelled as a closer for the Timber Rattlers this year

Dan Wussow, Appleton Post-Crescent

"Well, the split-finger is plus. His split-finger is a big league pitch, honestly," Pitching Coach Jim Henderson said. "And as a put-away pitch, it's always nice to be able to be a reliever late in the game and eliminate any kind of baserunners with a strikeout, so with the split-finger it's a true strikeout pitch and now he has the velocity on the fastball as well to keep hitters honest. So it's a really nice two-pitch mix right now."

My excitement for pitching prospects is always a bit mitigated when I hear they throw a splitter as one of their primary pitches. That's hard on a pitchers arm/elbow. Not that they can't and won't have success, it just seems like they end up injured more often.

But I don't know what degree that's perception vs reality.

One race the Vibes are leading --

A crowd of 3,530 fans saw the Ogden Raptors win Monday. That brings Ogden's average attendance to 3,670 per game in 17 home games. The team has won the Pioneer League's attendance race for 22 straight seasons but currently trails the new Rocky Mountain Vibes. Colorado Springs, which previously hosted a triple-A team, is averaging 3,830 fans per game.

Box: DSL Cubs #1 Squad 6, DSL Brewers/Indians 5

Walk-off loss, now 11-31

No Brewers pitched.

RF Jeicor Cristian and 2B Angel Bautista each had two hits, including a double.

Catcher Luis Valderrama hasn't played since July 11th, a game in which he was hit by a pitch and then pinch-run for. That's a bit scary, hopefully not head/face-related.

DSL Brewer pitchers issued 18 walks today; the DSL Brewers won 19-9.

Box: DSL Brewers 19, DSL Cardinals "Red" Squad 9

Check out the San Pedro Division, the Cerveceritos are in a pennant chase.

***

Interesting professional debut for 17-year-old Venezuelan LHP Albert Caldera, making the start:

DSL Cardinals Red Bottom of the 1st

Smith Vargas walks.

Sander Mora grounds into a double play, third baseman Jesus Parra to second baseman Sebastian Burciaga to first baseman Erys Bautista. Smith Vargas out at 2nd. Sander Mora out at 1st.

Albert Inoa walks.

Albert Inoa steals (9) 2nd base.

Luis Andujar walks.

Luis Andujar caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Jhonnys Cabrera to second baseman Sebastian Burciaga.

***

Professional debut for 17-year-old Venezuelan LHP Keiner Alfaro:

DSL Cardinals Red Bottom of the 2nd

Pitching Change: Keiner Alfaro replaces Albert Caldera.

Fernando Brazoban walks.

Endri Salas doubles (4) on a fly ball to right fielder Juan Frias. Fernando Brazoban to 3rd.

Claudio Ramirez walks.

Jesus Orecchia walks. Fernando Brazoban scores. Endri Salas to 3rd. Claudio Ramirez to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Nelson Cuevas replaces Keiner Alfaro.

Bryan Matute grounds into a double play, second baseman Sebastian Burciaga to shortstop Branlyn Jaraba to first baseman Erys Bautista. Endri Salas scores. Claudio Ramirez to 3rd. Jesus Orecchia out at 2nd. Bryan Matute out at 1st.

Smith Vargas walks.

Smith Vargas caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Jhonnys Cabrera to second baseman Sebastian Burciaga.

***

Amidst all the base on ball madness, can we focus (yet again) on the line of 18-year-old Mexican native RHP Fernando Olguin? My goodness, he's been statistically impressive in his 11 outings.

***

My guy, catcher Jhonnys Cabrera, was HBP in the 9th, stayed on the basepaths, but did not finish the game in the bottom of the inning.

Twenty-one Brewer hits, including six doubles and two home runs. Add in five walks and two HBP's. Can't wait for this set of Cardinal pitchers to reach the majors.

So yes, enjoy digesting the offensive side of the box.

Final: AZL Mariners 7, AZL Brewers Blue 5

AZL Brewers Blue Box Score

A rough performance from starter Alexis Ramirez and four errors leading to two unearned runs were the only major blemishes on an otherwise productive day for the Blues, though it was enough to doom the team to their 18th loss in 28 games. Ramirez gave up 6 runs (5 earned) in 4 innings of work, though he did strike out six against two free passes. Keegan McCarville gave up an unearned run as well in his two innings. And Pablo Garabitos continues to make steps forward, working three scoreless innings allowing only a triple.

Luis Silva lead the offense with two singles and a double; Cam Devanney and Danny Casals each singled and doubled too. Alex Hall and Orveo Saint each singled twice. Devanney is slashing .330/.414/.450 with more walks than Ks. Seems like he should be moved to up Rocky Mountain before the summer is out.

Final: AZL Brewers Gold 2, AZL Dodgers Mota 1

AZL Brewers Gold Box Score

Hey, an AZL team won. The offense did just enough, aided by a Dodgers error, and three Gold pitchers turned in good performances to lead the team to victory. Santiago Elizondo made his second appearance of the year as it seems he is working back from an injury of unknown nature. He worked two flawless innings, striking out one. Brayan Salaya turned in his best outing of the year, allowing a run in 4 1/3 innings. Progress has been slow with the July 2016 bonus baby, but the worm seems to be turning for Salaya. Luis Contreras finished things out with 2 2/3 scoreless.

No one had more than one hit, but Matthew Mika, Andres Melendez and Francis Florentino each had an extra-base knock; doubles for the former two, a triple for the last. Mika walked as well and was the only Gold member to get on base twice.

Only reason I can think of that he’s not pitching for the brewers now is trade possibility. Absolutely has to be brought up August 1st if he’s still a brewer.

Or that he's not on the 40-man, he's a year removed from TJ, this is the most success he's had at any level and there's 4-5 guys in front of him. And they just signed another reliever with ML experience to muddy the AAA bullpen.

Every year there are guys that perform exceptionally well in the SAL, only to struggle in AAA. Olczak, Zack Brown, Miguel Sanchez, Nick Ramirez, most recently. Before it was Burnes, Burgos, Taylor Scott, Derby, Snow, Ortiz, Lopez, Jungmann. Before that, guys like Tyler Cravy, Tyler Wagner and Damien Magnifico come to mind. AA is for prospects, AAA is for pro's. Williams will likely need to show that he can get AAA batters out before taking the next step.

You must not have read the new scouting reports. They think he’s ready to get big league hitters out now. The last month he’s been unhittable, 11 ip 5 h. 1 bb 19 Ks.

Legitimately curious, where have you seen new scouting reports saying he could get MLB hitters out now?
