Such a crazy tear. He's still only 22, three months younger than Hiura. I'm excited.

He spent his career so far being too patient and waiting for the right pitch. He k’d looking a lot & would pass on many drivable balls. He wanted to work count and take a lot pitches. This year his decision to be more aggressive and attack balls regardless of count has been huge. He was most advanced prep bat coming out. Potential for contact, average, walks and power. Glad to see it come together!

Excellent review. I really only get to see the Mudcats in person so it is great when someone can explain the reasons behind a breakout campaign. It makes it much easier to get excited about a player when there are tangible reasons for such a breakout.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I'm just loving watching some of these guys. Turang reaching Carolina this year(struggling a bit, but very early, though proving he was a great pick already) and am I crazy for being as excited about Mario Feliciano going 2 for 4 with a HR and a 2B tonight? Or all the other catchers who just keep plugging along and developing.

Grisham's looking like he's going to force his way up at some point this year...at worst during Sept callup's once rosters expand, but it could be even before that.

I watched him a little in Wisconsin, but while I guess in retrospect that scouting report makes a lot of sense, at the time I was just totally uninspired. He didn't look like anything special. And now..he's a stud. In time to split AB's in Braun's last season here and then take over the job the following week.

Final: DSL Brewers 3, DSL Cubs2 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

It's always nice to shut out the Cubs, even at the lowest level of the minors. The good guys did just that on Wednesday morning, blanking the Cubs 3-0. Young Jesus Parra homered and walked, while Johnnys Cabrera stayed hot as well, launching a home run of his own. Parra got off to a hot start to his pro career, including a 5-5 day with 2 doubles and 2 homers in his third game. He cooled off a bit after that, though, and finished June with a 643 OPS. The 16-year-old has more than kicked it into gear in July, though, posting a .293/.420/.512 clash while showing improvements in both BB% and K%. For his part, Cabrera has also improved as the season has gone on, posting a 612 OPS in June and a 870 OPS so far in July.

Alejandro Marte seems to have his ticket punched to join an AZL club after the DSL season ends. He singled and walked twice in the win, and now has a 984 OPS (a 162 wrc+!) on the year. He's been striking out a lot, but no one's perfect.

It will be interesting to see who the Brewers bring stateside yet this summer. They typically promote a small handful of players, mostly higher-signing bonus guys. However, the AZL rosters are already nearly full and the signing bonus guys haven't necessarily been the best-performing. Eduarqui Fernandez has a 648 OPS, Branlyn Jaraba has a 676 OPS, Erys Bautista has a 635 OPS, and Eduardo Garcia/Carlos Roa are both hurt.

Two guys who may well see stateside ball soon are Oscar Castaneda and Fernando Olguin, the Tijuana-born pitchers who combined for the shutout. I don't have much in the way of scouting reports on either, but they are carrying 2.43 and 1.16 ERAs, respectively. And both with solid peripherals.

Final: DSL Dodgers Shoemaker 3, DSL Brewers/Indians 0 (8 innings)

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

The co-op was shut out 3-0 in a rain-shortened game in order to provide some balance in the universe. The Brewers contributions were singles from Francisco Gonzalez and Vitor Watanabe, and a walk drawn by Angel Bautista. No Brewers pitched.

Final: AZL Padres2 12, AZL Brewers Blue 4

AZL Brewers Blue Box Score

This game got ugly quick for the Blues, was 12-0 after 5 innings, and a late comeback didn't quiiiiiiite get there. The bright spots were that Arbert Cipion cracked another few extra base hits, and Cam Devanney singled three times.

The game saw Karlos Morales' 2019 debut. Morales, currently on Wisconsin's 7-day IL, is in his third year with the Brewers after being selected in the 25th round of the 2017 draft. The results have not been great, but he's still 19 and the Brewers can be (and have been) patient with Karlos.

Final: AZL Brewers Gold 6, AZL Dodgers Lasorda 5

AZL Brewers Gold Box Score

Despite a valiant 9th inning effort to subvert the unexpected, the Golds did manage to win on Wednesday. Larry Ernesto hit his first home run of the year, and four Gold pitchers combined to allow just two earned runs despite a lot of baserunning traffic from the Dodgers. Included in the quartet of pitchers was Santiago Elizondo, making his 2019 (and stateside) debut. The diminutive Mexican lefty pitched really well in the DSL last season.

AZL Brewers Gold Game Log

The game was 6-2 going to the bottom of the 9th:

AZL Dodgers Lasorda Bottom of the 9th

Jaime Perez reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Felix Valerio. Jaime Perez to 2nd.

Edwin Mateo doubles (4) on a line drive to left fielder Francis Florentino. Jaime Perez scores.

Luis Rodriguez reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Felix Valerio.

Eddys Leonard grounds out, pitcher Jose Parra to first baseman Aaron Familia. Edwin Mateo to 3rd. Luis Rodriguez to 2nd.

Yunior Garcia grounds out, third baseman Felix Valerio to first baseman Aaron Familia. Edwin Mateo scores. Luis Rodriguez to 3rd.

Aldrich De Jongh singles on a ground ball to shortstop Odrick Pitre. Luis Rodriguez scores.

Yhostin Chirinos lines out to third baseman Felix Valerio.

I went to the Timber Rattlers game last night. Jarvis looked good, and works at a real quick pace. Think he topped out at 91, but can add velocity, small stature at only 19 so room to grow. If the velocity ticks up as he fills out he could move up the chain. Seemed like he located fastball and off speed stuff pretty well.

Last night I noticed they only use 2 umpires, been to a lot of minor league games and never paid attention to it I guess. Was hilarious to see a left handed batter check swing, plate ump point to the field ump who’s standing at first base, field ump stone face signals no swing on a play her view would have been totally blocked off.

It's always 2 umps below AA, as far as I know. And yes, asking the field umpire standing completely out of the line of site of the swing, particularly out at second base, their opinion on a check swing is... something.

Btw, here's my twitter thread on the game last night.

I didn’t pick up on the command issues for Jarvis, but was near 3rd base, so not a great angle.

I did come away impressed with Howell. Couple fly balls over his head that he went straight back on. He turned and ran directly to the spot. No tracking, banana route. His initial read put him right on the spot. He looked smooth.
