Woodruff/Burnes

Bulldogboy
He can go any day now, not gonna bother me one bit.

Strange, I think that every single day about someone on this very forum...

I know, you’ve made that clear many times. It’s ok, at some point moving forward we’ll probably agree on most things Brewers.

Now I read Counsell saying Woodruff not gonna be ready till end of September, first of October. Wow, idiots they are this year. First it was Labor Day, then Stearns said middle of September, now this. Counsell is a jerk. “Obviously won’t be ready till end of September”, OBVIOUSLY? Really? So your gonna talk like that to us now? He can go any day now, not gonna bother me one bit. Fresh eye’s and idea’s and such might be warranted.

This was widely known weeks ago. Stearns gave interviews stating they were looking at mid-September at earliest. Brewers need to be careful with their ace.

Yes, I said to '92 that there was a good chance he wouldn't pitch again for the Brewers this season. The timeline they gave was a near best-case scenario.

There's absolutely no reason to throw a guy out there with a core injury that hasn't healed yet. That's almost the ideal way to make a guy start to alter his delivery and rotate less, put more pressure on his shoulder and then we'd have people saying that not only should the Manager go for letting him pitch, but everyone should go for ruining our young stud.

I am resigned to the fact we’re probably not seeing Woody till the playoffs, per Counsell’s words. Starting vs Strasburg or Scherzer would work for me.

Wow, another cringeworthy hot take. I'm shocked.

Sure would be nice to see some good outings from Burnes to feel better about him next year in a big role. His stuff is too good not to make something out of him. Call me crazy, but I'd like to see more than two pitches thrown.

That isn't directed at me, is it? I mean, i suppose the "for worse" part might be a little harsh.

I agree ... Burnes' stuff is too good to truly understand how he could wash out. He was damn near dominant in the pen last year. I really don't understand what happened.

Watching Burnes last night has me wanting to see more of him this last 8 games. He looked just like he did last September. Dominant, confident, focused. Can you imagine this pen with a 2018 Burnes. I know, he’s had a horrible year, but so did the pitching staff till August 31. I’d potentially rather see Burnes than Black or Albers in the playoffs. Lastly, if we need a K late in a game, other than Hader and possibly Pomeranz and Peralta, he’d be the one I’d bring in to get it.

I'd like to see a more good outings from Burnes before I would start jumping on the band wagon. He has been awful the entire year and I would need to see a lot more before I would put him on the post season roster much less bring him into a game changing situation.

It was nice to see Burnes get a chance last night. He was only going to get a chance with a big lead, I think. And I think that's still true: he can get some work if they get some big leads.

Well then here’s to seeing another blow out tonight. Love to see Burnes pitch back to back, which is what he might have to do in the playoffs. Baby steps to teenagers to young man to stud again, so he’ll probably need 3 more outings, if he does well in this next blow out (Tonight/Tomorrow?)maybe we can see him early in a closer game, or maybe CC loves Burnes like I think he does, and like some of us, want to give him a real chance to see what he can do again?

Seeing Burnes succeed last night was great. But it was against the Pirate's less than optimum hitters on their roster who were batting in a 10-1 game and just (more or less) playing through the string and trying to get to the post-game spread and/or their hotel room at that point.

If Burnes were to be put on the post-season roster, I would need to see "Good Burnes" in some higher leverage situations first. And with only 8 games left, we might not see enough of those situations to make a fair judgment on him.

My opinion, at this point, would be to just wait until 2020.

Low-leverage and working with the pitching coach this year. Lots of off-season work at the pitching lab.

Work him into high-leverage during spring training.

Burnes and Shaw are sort of in the same boat. They haven’t been MLB caliber players this year. Based on past and pedigree they’ll both get another chance next year but pressure will be on to show something or they’ll both on the path to being out of the organization.

Disagree.

Shaw, imo, is traded this offseason.

Burnes will be in AAA, working on his mix of pitches and command.

IF Stearns re-signs Moose I think Shaw will be part of a trade to get another starter. Shaw may intrigue somebody like the Rangers who need a 3B and have both Lynn and Minor who would help the Crew.

Agreed. I would be surprised if Moose is not re-signed and Shaw is still on the team. We can't afford to give Shaw a shot and have another complete season of Ben Sheets at the plate. Burnes is an extremely promising talent that just crashed and burned with location. His slider and change looked "cured" last night compared to just hanging in the zone waiting to be smashed.

I shudder to think what kid of starter Travis Shaw would bring in a trade after the complete crap show of a season he just had...

I'm glad he pitched well last night, but I would have just sat him down for the rest of this year. I suppose getting him some clean innings at the end of the year can help his mental state, but I'd think just letting him take a break and then start again next year when pitchers report...and even then starting him in AA would be better for him.

Look at it this way.... We traded Thornburg for Shaw and Dubon and Pennington, and we traded Dubon for Pom and Black. If we get NOTHING for Shaw, that trade was still a huge win.

Well we also got 2 years of a really good Travis Shaw. That was still the biggest value in the trade so far. It's hard to believe what has happened to him this year.

This is my point. Burnes has more innings pitched this year than last year and has an ERA of 10 and some folks would consider him for a potential playoff roster. Meanwhile, Shaw was a big time player for two full seasons and everyone’s ready to kick him to the curb over a single bad season. I think both players get another chance next year because the talent is legitimate it just didn’t translate into results this year

Ummmm, what????? The only people considering him for a playoff roster spot are Nationals and Dodgers fans. If the Brewers put him on the roster for playoffs(if they make it) there would be an outcry to remove Sterns, CC, and a good chance we'd need a new stadium cuz Miller Park would be burned to the ground. Even his most loyal supporters can't rationalize him being on a playoff roster. But that's just my humble opinion.
