Box: DSL Brewers/Indians 4, DSL Red Sox #2 Squad 3

Two in a row, almost there!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnVrSZHnvYY

6'3" Venezuelan rookie RHP Edwin Jimenez has a 2.95 ERA over six outings despite 18 walks in 21.1 innings. This was his first non-start and he only walked two over four scoreless. The other hurlers in this win were Indian farmhands.

None of the five Brewers in the lineup reached more than once, although rookie infielder (usually first baseman, as was the case here) Elian Gonzalez drove in two with a single and a sacrifice fly.

Box: DSL Diamoondbacks #2 Squad 4, DSL Brewers 1

All-Star rookie RHP Rafael Garcia exited after his first inning:

DSL D-backs2 Top of the 1st

Carlos Goris strikes out swinging.

Alvin Guzman singles on a line drive to left fielder Rafael Martinez.

Alvin Guzman steals (7) 2nd base.

Wild pitch by pitcher Rafael Garcia. Alvin Guzman to 3rd.

Luis Rubio out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Reidy Mercado. Alvin Guzman scores.

Ramses Malave walks.

Danyer Sanabria called out on strikes.

The All-Star Game is tomorrow (Saturday the 13th), so his appearance here makes little sense, and hopefully he's not injured.

Really nice six-inning outing by 22-year-old RHP Juan Gomez behind Garcia. Gomez missed all of 2017 (right elbow bursitis, as per the Brewers).

Very little going on offensively, as you might gather by the final score. Super-young Venezuelan catcher (just turned 17, although he was the DH here for the very first time after 22 games behind the dish) Jhonnys Cabrera doubled as part of a two-hit effort and has his average up to .250 and his OPS to .692. Jump on the Jhonnys train folks, and enjoy the ride. The Brewers don't hand out starting catcher gigs to then-16-year-olds every year.

Final: AZL Giants Orange 2, AZL Brewers Blue 1

AZL Brewers Blue Box Score

Another quiet day for the offense betrayed some fine performances from the pitching staff and the Blues fall to 7-13. Cam Devanney and Darrien Miller each managed two singles; Kevin Hardin tripled and scored the Blues' only run. Two Blue runners were picked off and a Devanney error at short cost the team an unearned run.

Antoine Kelly continued to shine. He pitched a career-high three innings, with only a walk as a blemish. He struck out two. In seven innings as a pro, he's allowed a hit, a walk, and has struck out eight. Jhoan Cruz pitched 4 solid innings in relief of Kelly, allowing one earned run. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes

Hoping you occasionally really immerse yourself in Greg Young, Jr.'s notes -- very informative.

***

Box, Game One: Frederick 6, Carolina 4

Box, Game Two: Carolina 4, Frederick 1, nine innings (scheduled for seven)

VIDEO Game One Highlights from the Frederick perspective: Watch two absolute dribblers spell trouble for Aaron Ashby and Mudcats. Ashby finished with a poor line, no doubt - but c'mon...

***

Brice Turang was 0-for-6 in the twinbill but walked three times and scored four runs.

The Mudcats have not posted a doubleheader summary (off to Wilmington, Delaware immediately after the second game).

Until then, here are the brief Associated Press recaps:

Jomar Reyes homered and had three hits, driving in two as the Frederick Keys topped the Carolina Mudcats 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.

Carolina took the lead in the first when it scored three runs, including a double by Payton Henry that scored Tristen Lutz.

Trailing 4-2, the Keys took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. Reyes hit a solo home run en route to the one-run lead.

The Keys tacked on another run in the fifth when Reyes hit an RBI single, scoring Trevor Craport.

***

Eddie Silva hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to help lead the Carolina Mudcats to a 4-1 win over the Frederick Keys in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday.

The home run by Silva scored Ryan Aguilar after he reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then went to third on a ground out by Mario Feliciano. The home run came after Brice Turang scored on a groundout to give the Mudcats the lead earlier in the inning.

Silva homered and singled, driving home two runs in the win.

Anthony Bender (1-0) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while Tyler Joyner (0-1) took the loss in the Carolina League game.

Such bummer news, first a reminder:

The two stud Dominican Summer League rookie kid shortstops -- Eduardo Garcia (last played June 18th), and Carlos Roa of the co-op team (last played June 19th), have been missed.

***

UPDATE: Both Garcia and Roa were placed on the 60-day injured list Friday, ending their seasons.
