Thornburg being released?

TURBO

The Red Sox really got burned in our trade, and I'm ok with that!!! Not that Thornburg was hurt, but that the Red Sox, as an organization got burned, to clarify...

WEEI's Rob Bradford hears that Tyler Thornburg has refused an assignment to the minor leagues and is "trending toward being released."

Thornburg just completed a 30-day minor league rehab assignment, but he surrendered 15 earned runs over 10 2/3 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket during that period and the Red Sox apparently have no desire to put him back on their active roster. The 30-year-old reliever had posted a 7.71 ERA in 18 2/3 innings with Boston before hitting the injured list on May 23 with a hip impingement. His release should become official in the next couple of days.

He is worth taking a minor league flyer on..

All comes down to IF he is will to take an assignment to the minors to work on items. And that seems to be the rub: going to the minors to work on things. Boston is definitely needing help in its bullpen so if he fixes his issues, he would be back in the majors rather quick.

He can't be worse than the AAA shuttle guys we've been using. Low risk big reward.

Yes he can and he is. He didn't play in 2017, was horrendous in 2018, and even worse this year. At AAA this year; 10.1 IPs - 17 hits including 5 HRs - 9 BBs - 15 ERs - 3 WP. I agree he is low risk, but he is worse than even the slugs that CC has been getting from San Antonio. Rather than sign Thornburg and have him take a roster spot, I'd like to see them promote guys like Supak and D. Willliams to AAA to see what they can do against better competition.

I mean... the last one currently has an era of 54.

And he is gone. Fine with Thornburg in the minors, but definitely not on the 25 man roster.

Possibly. I wonder if it's also in part due to Boston trying to mess with his routine or whatever. If I remember correctly Boston changed his routine or something and he attributed that to his injury. So this might be him wanting out of Boston.

Is there anything to actually back this up or is it just based on the fact he was good at one point prior? Sometimes guys are just shells of their former self and are nothing like what they once were. Is there anything to actually believe he isn't far off his 2016 version? Or it is believable he could rebound?

Where is his velocity at? I personally will love to have him back. Give him a minor league deal & hopefully being back “home” he can figure it back out again. It’s worked before. If it fails.... oh well, nothing hurt.

I took a real lazy look and it looked similar or slightly down on his fastball. But there is a whole lot more than just that and I didn't have the energy to really dive deep into him 2016 vs. 2019. Guessing something else vastly different.

He's a has been. Obviously post shoulder surgeries his arsenal isn't good enough to get major league hitters out, and despite being given plenty of rope by Boston to try adapt his arsenal of pitches to where he can get hitters out, Thornburg has either failed or refused to adapt. Obviously, walking away from $800,000 in salary indicates what he thinks of the Red Sox organization. I'd rather see a pitcher who actually has a chance to help the Brewers soak up those AAA innings rather than a pitcher who on his way out of the game and looking to hang on.

I know their whole shoulder program is a bit controversial...some like Joe Kelly swear by it while it may have ruined Tyler Thornburgs career. I wonder if he partially blames them for his struggles and just wants out of that organization. Right or wrong, I suspect that's a bit of a factor. That said, I'd only want Tyler if he accepted a minor league deal with some time in the minors to try and get right. With how bad he's struggling, no way should we be throwing him at MLB hitters.

It's plausible if not likely he's upset with the organization and their shoulder program. The question is will getting out of there and into a program more suited to him improve his results or has he been permanently damaged? At this point I doubt even the O's will give him a MLB contract.

Can we get Wily Peralta back too?
