Women's World Cup - USA! USA!

I'm not trying to start a giant fight with the college thing, but you have to admit that there are a ton of parallels...especially when I see arguments for how the amount of revenue generated should determine pay or that "capitalist" principles should dictate salaries.

I don't think that's the best way to do things. The success of a sport depends collectively on all participants. My personal opinion is that collective bargaining is the best way to get a fair contract for everyone--which means treating lower-level/minor league players better than what they are "worth" in the free market. Minor leagues are a necessary part of the system that leads to revenue at the highest levels. So are women's sports. Plus it's the right thing to do.

What is necessary about the US women's soccer team. People pay attention to it for acouple days every couple years. If these players dont want the experience, fame, and some money that come along with it, plenty of women just as good who would love that opportunity.

Ditto for minor leaguers. They get paid to play a game, and have a chance to make it to the big time. The vast majority only last 2-3 years, it's no hardship.

Yeah, that's just not at all true.

One thing I haven't quite gotten about the spin in last couple days after they won is kind of like they're acting as if everyone was rooting against them or trying to hold them down or something. Guess you have to create that way of thinking in your head at times for motivation but I don't see it.

For the point about plenty of players just as good. Of course not true if you eliminate the whole team. But my soccer nerdy friend said before the tournament that if they split the US team into 2 teams that both teams would probably be favorites to make the Final 4. Though neither would be the favorite to win anymore. So, chances are one or two could quit and it wouldn't greatly matter or that the next 15 that didn't make the team could probably be competitive but wouldn't win. But the overall point is of course still wrong.

I think there was a, how should I put it, a certain subset of Twitter that was actively rooting against them after Rapinoe's comments came out before the match against England. I'll leave it at that and hope others don't get political here.

Well said Homer, we will leave it at that and avoid the politics. I also think that globally there are a lot of soccer fans that would have liked to have seen the team fail whether due to them being US, the heavy favorites or not their style of play (too cocky). I saw some similarities to how Brazil is generally viewed on the men's side. Perenially they are the favorites and oftened labeled as cocky. Lots of people like to see them lose whether that is because of their personal feelings or the satisfaction that their team won't have to play them in the knockouts.

Yea of course other countries will be against you, I mean they should be as they're your opponent.

Correct me if wrong, but she started the whole thing too. But still, all this had done is get her name out there more and drum up more support and attention for her and the team. But yes of course there is always the subset that will be negative and twitter gives it a platform.

IDK, just seems to me there has been overwhelming support and I think it had it's best ratings. I mean there was the last time around too but seemed more this time.

mod edit: I took out the quasi political stuff. You didn't really cross a line, but I worry others may not respond appropriately.

FWIW her comments were made in January and released during the World Cup.

I was busy last week, I wasn't aware I was away from brewerfan for so long.

I probably caught part or all of say 30 of the 54 matches. Ditto for four years ago.

My take away is Rose Lavelle. I cannot believe I didn't see her play once with the Badgers, BTN and all. I was familiar with the name, but thought there better players on the team. Then she's the top pick in the pro draft, then she makes the WC team, then she's in the starting lineup. All surprises to me. But even before the final, I found her to be in the next tier of players behind Morgan and Rapinoe. I'd put her in the top five for the Americans.
