Could the Mayor of DDC be getting back in shape? Good news, if true... I always felt he'd turn it around - he was still drawing lots of walks.

Dubon really turning up the power... maybe it is time to think about dealing Arcia to make space for him.

And Trent Grisham... he is breaking out while Ray and Stokes have been losing this year to injuries and not getting on track - Stokes at least is keeping the OBP skills. That ability never slumps.

Antoine Kelly's minor league career has started about as well as possible. For a guy that raw, I wasn't expecting a WHIP of .25 through two outings, even in the AZL.

Heck no. I figured he was a looong shot and would likely walk about 3 guys an inning and spend a couple years at the rookie level given his profile. High upside project-able arm, but wild. Those guys seldom end up hitting and it's even more rare that they come out of the gates dominating.

Really just an all around great night for the Brewers farm system.

Shaw 3-4 with 2 HR's. HE'S FIXED! Ok, probably not just yet, but man, if he can get his confidence back, get his approach back and come back up and contribute, even if he just platoons the rest of the year, that's an enormous boost.

Also in AAA, Dubon hit his 14th HR of the year. Not bad for a utility IF'er without much pop in the bat.

Grisham YET AGAIN hitting a HR. Seems like a daily occurrence now. I know he's actually cooled off a bit in AAA, but still, this guy really seems like he's figured something out. I'd like to see him called up right now with Braun going to the DL and Grisham getting some starts for Cain. Basically use him and Gamel to give Cain and Braun 10 days off before and after the ASB. 2 for 5

Down in AA;

Rassmussen with another dominant performance. 3 IP, just the lone hit, 4 K's.

Ponce finished that one off with a clean inning and a K. Seems like he's gotta be in line for a promotion to AAA. He also seems to continue to fly under the radar. He's got a 1.74 ERA, good K/9. His stuff has always looked like it could make him a really nice high leverage reliever.

Carolina-Not much to note. Lutz went 2-3 with a HR in a 2B, then an O-fer.

Wisconsin-Almost got no-hit and Turang has struggled a bit. Of course he's still at .280/.380 after closer to .300/.400 most of the year.

Rookie Ball, Ray went 1-3. And as mentioned above, Antoine Kelly has been dominant thus far.

It'd be really nice if Kelly could develop at the same time a couple of our Latin American signings are maturing and Turang is coming up.

More evidence that this is a extremely underrated farm system with a lot of upside left in it. Rassmussen has a huge ceiling, Turang reminds me of Trea Turner, Grisham is playing like a man possessed, Corey Ray at least looks like he's healthy from the box scores and on the topic of guys who have had awful starts, Shaw's finally starting to get going.

Not exactly the Padres farm hands, but still...not quite as bad as has been suggested.

Box: DSL Cubs #1 Squad 2, DSL Brewers/Indians 1

Co-op team outhit the Latin-based Cublets 11-5, but:

Team RISP: 1-for-12.

Team LOB: 11.

18-year-old 2nd-year Dominican RHP Deybi Arias only allowed one run in three innings, following up a fantastic start by an Indians hurler, but it was enough to be saddled with the loss.

Player development: In his rookie season last year, switch-hitting Dominican infielder Francisco Gonzalez posted a .394 OPS (not a misprint). Through 62 AB's in 2019, the now-19-year-old sports a .323/.386/.435 line (.821 OPS) after a three-run game here.

Quiet otherwise as five position players were Indians, 2nd-year Brazilian corner outfielder Vitor Watanabe was on base twice via single and walk.

Box: DSL Brewers 11, DSL Cardinals "Red" Squad 9

Sixteen hits for the good guys.

The 16-13 Cerveceritos have a respectable .263 team batting average and .351 OBP, nestled about a third of the way down the league standings.

17-year-old rookie second baseman and Mexico native Sebastian Burciaga singled four times and drove in three. He's on a nine-game hit streak that also includes two three-hit games. He's played only second base thus far in 16 games (four others as DH, as he was here, batting 3rd).

Three others reached base three times. Another 17-year-old (turned 17 last month), rookie Venezuelan catcher Jhonnys Cabrera hopefully got the ball back from his first professional home run.

One of those box scores you can have fun poring over -- baserunning, fielding, good and not-so-good there, and we haven't mentioned the middling pitching lines. Enjoy as you wish.

Infielder Luis Avila, who got off to an 0-for-19 start (where he currently stands) has not played since June 26th. Avila pitched in one game this season, I double-checked the date, it was not his last appearance prior to the idle time, so it's not a Jose Canseco-like pitching injury.

RHP Carlos Luna continued his career-long pattern of impeccable control (a career interrupted by Tommy John surgery and associated rehab setbacks).

10th round Texas Tech RHP Taylor Floyd made his pro debut -- enjoy the moment, young man, despite the mixed results:

Ogden Bottom of the 8th

Pitching Change: Taylor Floyd replaces Karsen Lindell.

Jeremy Arocho called out on strikes.

Andy Pages walks.

Sam McWilliams called out on strikes.

Andy Pages steals (3) 2nd base.

Brandon Lewis homers (1) on a fly ball to right center field. Andy Pages scores.

Mound Visit.

Pitching Change: Jackson Sigman replaces Taylor Floyd.

Ryan Ward homers (2) on a fly ball to right center field.

Sauryn Lao pops out to right fielder Micah Bello.

Cougars Hold Rattlers to One Hit in 3-0 Win

Lujano's single in the first is Wisconsin's only hit

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wow, that two-run Cougar 5th had RHP Logan Gillaspie snake-bit (Rattler pun intended), as Chris describes.

Jesus Lujano now 15-for-17 in SB attempts, big improvement from his 8-for-14 Helena effort last year.

I think we underplayed the rough patch Brice Turang had in June:

OPS by Month:

April - .831

May - .802

June - .599

Not worried.

Shuckers Quiet M-Braves For Second Straight Win

Rasmussen, Belisario and Ponce Slice Through Mississippi Offense

By Andrew Chapman / Biloxi Shuckers

A combined ten K's and no walks for the three mound men here, sweet.

Wonder what would happen if the MLB / AAA baseballs were introduced to the humid air of the AA Southern League. Guessing they would still fly, but it'd be interesting to see the impact.

San Antonio Pre-Game Media Notes

***

Box: San Antonio 6, New Orleans 5

Hernan Perez played second base, 0-for-5 in the cleanup spot in his Missions debut.

Travis Shaw singled in addition to his two monster home runs.

Never stop splicing your own highlight plays, Mauricio Dubon. You won't have to do that in the big leagues, MLB will do it for you (hopefully the Brewers despite your big-time trade chip value).

Chris Mehring has done his part in his game summaries, but I've been very lax with my "DVR Alerts".

Saturday's Timber Rattlers game will be televised on CW-14 in Northeastern Wisconsin and on My-24 in Southeastern Wisconsin starting at 6:30 PM.

Schedules:

CW 14 to broadcast 15 Timber Rattlers games in 2019

Final: AZL Athletics Gold 4, AZL Brewers Blue 3

AZL Brewers Blue Box Score

Alex Hall tripled as part of a three-hit night and Terence Doston retook the AZL stolen base lead with two more base nabs, but unearned runs allowed in the 5th and 6th cost the Blues a chance at victory.

Antoine Kelly started and while he allowed his first hit as a pro, Kelly struck out 4 and walked no one.

Final: AZL Brewers Gold 3, AZL Athletics Green 1

AZL Brewers Gold Box Score

Corey Ray continued his rehab assignment, there were multi-hit games from Felix Valerio and Andres Melendez, and a quartet of Gold pitchers were quite effective as the Golds won their 5th game of the season.

17-year-old Mario Perez in particular acquitted himself well, throwing 5 innings in relief of starter Kelvin Bender. Perez allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 2. And in his fourth professional appearance, did not walk a batter for the first time. AZL veteran Jose Parra struck out the side in the ninth.
