Box: Ogden 4, Rocky Mountain 2

Alternative box includes inning-by-inning linescore

Catcher Jose Sibrian is only 20 years old, but in his 4th year in the system (missed all of 2017). The Venezuelan native has plenty of time to build back his initial prospect value.

Have to love 6'6", 229 LH-bat leadoff men.

Raptors Take Independence Day Victory Over Vibes

Ogden Takes Command of Division with Fifth Straight Victory

Ogden, UTAH – The Rocky Mountain Vibes lost a hard-fought game one to the Ogden Raptors 4-2 on Thursday evening, dropping their first-ever Independence Day contest. The Raptors have now won five straight games to take a commanding first-half lead of the Pioneer League Southern Division. With the loss to Ogden in game one of the series, the Vibes fall to 1-7 in first games of a series this season, compared to 7-4 in all other games this season combined. By contrast, the Raptors improved to 5-1 in game ones in 2019.

After a scoreless first frame, the Vibes struck first in this five-game series in the top of the second inning. Jose Sibrian reached on a one-out single, advancing to second on an Edwin Sanó sacrifice bunt. Jess Williams then doubled him home for the first run of the game giving the Vibes an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Raptors broke up the shutout to take their first lead of the series. Jon Littell and Sauryn Lao drew a walk and a single, respectively, and with two outs on the board Zac Ching singled to plate Littell before Ogden executed a double steal with Lao swiping home for a 2-1 advantage.

In the very next half-inning the Vibes responded, tying the game at two runs apiece. Bryan Torres led off with a four-pitch walk, stealing second to move himself into scoring position. On the first pitch of a two-out at-bat, Williams drove in his second run of the game, singling to right to score Torres and tie up the ballgame.

Both teams pitched well late into the game, but in the bottom of the eighth inning the Raptors offense surged to put them ahead. Sam McWilliams hit his sixth homer of the season to lead off the eighth and make it 3-2, with Ogden scoring again in the frame to go up 4-2.

Down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Vibes attempted a rally as Ernesto Martinez Jr. hit a two-out double to put the tying run at the dish, but an Antonio Piñero flyout ended the contest as Ogden captured game one on the Fourth of July.

The Vibes continue their seven-game road trip Friday in Ogden, with the second game of a five-game set against the Raptors. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM (8:00 Central). The Vibes are slated to start right-hander Carlos Luna (1-1, 4.50) against Ogden southpaw Antonio Hernandez (0-0, 8.44).

Three consecutive strong starts from 18-year-old rookie Venezuelan RHP Yostin Villalobos. He and two Indians' relievers combined to fan nine and walk none.

The co-op mustered only four hits, with 19-year-old 2nd-year Dominican infielder (although this was his first game at third base this year) Francisco Gonzalez singling twice.
