Brewers sign Drew Smyly to a minor league contract

TURBO

Brewers signed LHP Drew Smyly to a minor league contract.

The left-hander posted a miserable 8.42 ERA, 1.91 WHIP, and 52/34 K/BB ratio through 51 1/3 innings with the Rangers, but there's still talent here. It's a nice low-risk signing for the Brewers.

No risk signing. Good move. Smyly has awful, but a minor lg. contract hurts nothing.

And if he can turn it around he'd be a nice addition without any real risk here.

See the Rangers also cut Shelby Miller loose, I wouldn't mind the same kind of deal for him.

I thought Miller was going to be stud.

Miller has been as bad as you could get for the past 4 years. He hasn't thrown many innings the last two years, but what he threw was awful. I don't know if Stearns would even want to waste a spot at AAA with Miller.

Some additional comments on the signing in the Minor League Transaction thread.

I feel like the signing should be worth it’s weight in gold in terms of pun possibilities, but I’m having a heck of time coming up with them.

All I know is that I will be Smylying if he can return to his good numbers.

Maybe he could rebound and take Anderson's spot. Anderson just allowed another HR, his 10th in only 58 IPs and the 9th time in 11 starts that he has been taken deep. After allowing 30 dingers last year, Anderson could easily be replaced.

you make it sound like Anderson had a bad 2018 and it having a bad 2019. simply not true. He's allowed homers, but luckily not much else

Miller's really baffling. It's not like he went from some flamethrower to a soft tossing finesse pitcher. He's throwing harder than he did in his best year with Atlanta.

Smyly's been worse this year. Kinda a race to the bottom, but if Smyly is a good signing because it's a minor league deal and no risk, how would Miller be different?

I’m sure it’s merely an opt out so he has time to latch on with another organization before the minor-league season is over. There is potentially a lot of money at stake for such a pitcher should he be able to get back to the major leagues and pitch effectively so if the Brewers aren’t calling him up now, he may as well take his chances elsewhere. Although it would be tampering for a player to be seeking different employment while under contract with a club.

When guys are playing in the minors, I believe some amount of "tampering" is allowed. Teams and agents talk all the time, arrangements/ plans get made & sometimes acted upon.

I point to Oliver Perez asking for callup or release from the NY Yankees last yr @ Memorial Day. He was released and promptly signed with Cleveland and got placed on the MLB roster.. Milwaukee did something similar with Gio Gonzalez this season..
