Box: DSL Brewers 6, DSL Cubs #2 Squad 5

Second consecutive win over this Cubbie team, which had been 16-7 heading into the home-and-home.

A three-run 7th tied it at 5-5 in a very DSL way:

DSL Brewers Top of the 7th

Erys Bautista singles on a ground ball to left fielder Samuel Duarte.

Joneiker Ponce de Leon singles on a ground ball to shortstop Lizardo Ruiz. Erys Bautista to 2nd.

Branlyn Jaraba strikes out swinging.

Jesus Parra flies out to left fielder Samuel Duarte.

Juan Frias walks. Erys Bautista to 3rd. Joneiker Ponce de Leon to 2nd.

With Jhonnys Cabrera batting, Erys Bautista scores on a balk. Joneiker Ponce de Leon advances to 3rd on a balk. Juan Frias advances to 2nd on a balk.

Jhonnys Cabrera reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Lizardo Ruiz. Joneiker Ponce de Leon scores. Juan Frias scores.

Reidy Mercado walks. Jhonnys Cabrera to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Willians Vasquez replaces Kleiber Carreno.

Eduarqui Fernandez called out on strikes.

The eventual winning run scored in a more traditional way --

DSL Brewers Top of the 8th

Alejandro Marte doubles (7) on a fly ball to center fielder Jose Lopez.

Erys Bautista singles on a line drive to center fielder Jose Lopez. Alejandro Marte scores. Erys Bautista out at 2nd on the throw, center fielder Jose Lopez to second baseman Flemin Bautista.

18-year-old 2nd-year switch-hitting Dominican OF Reidy Mercado on base four times out of the leadoff spot. Despite all that time on the basepaths, Mercado (nor any other Brewer) attempted a steal. Mercado is 18-for-24 this season in that regard, OBP up to .377 now.

The top five in the order reached 13 times. Rookie CF Eduarqui Fernandez clubbed HR #4 on the season.

Of the four Cervecerito pitchers, the best work was done by LHP Joandris Tolentino, a 19-year-old 2nd-year Dominican native who netted his first professional save.

Box: DSL Dodgers "Shoemaker" Squad 7, DSL Brewers/Indians 2

The co-op team out-hit the LA kids 10-7, but lost the battle of bases-on-balls 8-to-2.

Converted outfielder, now RHP Francis Casado did not retire any of the four men he faced. OF the five hurlers you see, recently-turned 18-year-old 2nd-year-pro Dominican RHP Deybi Arias (two scoreless, stranded an inherited runner) was the other Milwaukee product.

Focus on the 5-through-8 spots in the co-op box. All Brewers, combining to reach eight times.

I'd have to think were it not for whatever his injury was, Lazar would be in Carolina by now. His stat line is absurd. In 11 appearances total this season, he has never posted fewer strikeouts than innings pitched (and has had more in all but one), has never given up more than two runs and has only walked more than one batter once.

Jarvis has also quietly had himself a good season, especially for a teenager. Between the work of those two and Turang, if there is such a thing as a good loss in the minors, this might be it given you could make a good case those are the top three prospects currently on the Timber Rattlers.

And while it hasn't been exactly smooth sailing for the AZL teams, if you add in guys who were hurt, the outlook looks a lot better hitter-wise when you look at combining them next year for the Vibes. Even just accounting for players currently 20 or younger (Devanney has been solid but is likely ticketed Wisconsin), and assuming no repeats, you could assemble a roster of:

C: Melendez, Hall and Marquez or Miller

1B: Hardin

2B: Valerio

SS: Castillo

3B: Familia

IF: McGee, Silva

OF: Rodriguez, Ernesto, Florentino, Leones, Cipion

There is reason for optimism with a lot of those guys.

AZL BREWERS CUP

GAME ONE

Final: AZL Brewers Blue 7, AZL Brewers Gold 4

AZL Brewers Cup Box Score

The AZL Brewers teams met for the first of four intra-squad games this AZL season and played what I'm sure was a spirited affair fraught with rivalry, intrigue, and camaraderie. Also, no one got hurt and no one gave a seriously embarrassing performance. The Blue team pulled out the victory thanks to a 4-run fifth inning. The teams face off next on the 13th. Will the Golds avenge this loss? DUN DUN DUN.

Felix Valerio lead all 19 Brewers hitters with 4 hits, including a double. The 18-year-old was acquired in the Keon Broxton trade and is hitting .357 ten games into his season. Ashton McGee, the recent 18th round pick out of North Carolina, had 3 hits, also including a double. Three other players had two-hit games: Daniel Castillo, Jackie Urbaez, and Alex Hall. Urbaez hit the game's lone home run. Hall tripled, as did Cam Devanney. Terence Doston added a double, too. Devanney and Arbert Cipion both walked twice.

As for the pitching, I had a bit of existential angst last night when I saw that two of my favorite AZL pitchers would be facing off. In the end, Joey Matulovich and Alexis Ramirez both pitched ok. The pitching star of the game was NDFA Luis Contreras, who pitching 2 1/3 clean innings, striking out 5. Henry Medina pitched 2 scoreless innings, striking out 3. Dylan Prohoroff, "rehabbing" in the AZL while he sits on Wisconsin's IL, earned his first save as a Brewer with a scoreless 9th for the Blues.
