Link Report for Sunday 6/30

In his first ten San Antonio appearances this year, RHP Jacob Barnes of the Milwaukee-San Antonio shuttle crew, posted a 0.82 ERA.

On Friday, he entered in the 7th inning with the Missions trailing 4-1 and a man on.

HR, single, single, HR ensued. Tough outing to be sure, particularly when viewed in the cold print of a box score / game log only.

While putting together Friday's Link Report details Saturday AM, I went into tweet mode while reviewing the San Antonio box and game summary, and made an observation about fellow reliever Alex Wilson's success since his DFA. OK, fine on that part.

In my vast tweet history, I'm sure there are many individual tweets which could be cited as careless, bordering on idiotic. This was one, because as you can see at the link above (may as well leave the tweet out there), I also managed to allow one particular bad pitching line for a single game (a AAA game at that) to have me tossing out the random removal of a player from the 40-man roster, which would be via DFA.

I appreciate that a couple of followers contacted me privately to note the tweet was somewhat out of character for me. There is a difference between hoping the Brewers say goodbye to Neftali Feliz circa 2017 and this situation. But then San Antonio-based followers also brought to my attention that two pitches into his 5th batter, Barnes was pulled by Manager Rick Sweet and Trainer Aaron Hobart for injury reasons.

Sure enough, I have since gone back to look at the MiLB.TV archive (gee Jim, that would have been a good idea Sat. AM). It's unclear what was troubling Barnes, so it would seem any early conjecture would call the removal precautionary. We'll probably hear something soon given Barnes' 40-man roster status. Hope it proves not to be serious.

As much as we try to highlight the positive within each Link Report, the sheer volume of data and observations will lead to the occasional lowlight. (Yes, I do note the occasional "golden sombrero", even among the youngest Brewers, but that's usually with the caveat that the player will laugh about it later in his successful career.)

I've posted in the past that I do strongly feel that players not on the 40-man roster should be free from undue criticism. Sure, we can be disappointed in a prospect's career path (hey, this game is hard and these guys are all pretty elite!), but a mistake like this on my part reminds me that even a rough comment on a 40-man guy needs to be backed up with the most basic of research and I failed in this regard here.

I'm pretty sure the big league club's bullpen troubles this past week also had me in a salty mood Saturday AM to begin with, but that's a weak excuse. I'm not actually held to any journalistic standards here at all (it's an unpaid gig, labor of love if you will), but I try to follow the basics.

So whether you're a big Jacob Barnes guy or not, here's hoping he'll be back to full-go soon, because he does carry value for the organization.

We'll bring this to the attention of Jerry Briggs, the Missions' home-game beat writer, to see if we can learn more.

Kind of glad this came about, think it'll make me better at what I do here and in my Twitter presence as well. Thanks for reading.

NOTE: For MiLB.TV subscribers, go to the June 28th San Antonio game, then to the 03:09:00 hour/minute mark when Barnes enters. He leaves due to injury a bit after the 03:21:00 mark.

Was surprised to see how well Biloxi ranks league-wide in overall batting numbers (sortable columns here), because on most nights, the individual lines don't "pop". Tough environment in the Southern League overall.

Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes

Box: Potomac 9, Carolina 1

Rare mis-fire for LHP Clayton Andrews, but surely Manager Joe Ayrault would have liked to have seen RHP Justin Topa close out the 8th just prior.

In six outings spanning just 6.2 innings, RHP Phil Bickford's WHIP is 2.85. He allowed two of Andrews' runners to score here, as the game summary below will detail.

Can we get this fixed already, MiLB? First-world problems right, if this is our biggest complaint.

4th round catcher Nick Kahle returns after two weeks away with a lower-body injury (based on early video we had pointed out at the time). Kahle was the designated hitter here.

Final: AZL Brewers Blue 11, AZL Angels 0

AZL Brewers Blue Box Score

The offense had 10 hits, 10 walks, and stole 8 bases while three Blue pitchers twirled the team's 3rd shutout of the season, to move the club to 4-7 on the season.

Cam Devanney was on base 5 times (3-3, 2 BB, SB) and Terence Doston was on base 4 times (1-1, 3 BB, 4 SB) to lead the offensive attack. Luis Silva also added 2 hits and a walk.

Jeyner Baez pitched the final two innings of the game, in relief of starter Ian Exposito and reliever Harold Chirino. The 23-year-old converted catcher lowered his ERA to 0.96 and has struck out 14 in 9.1 innings. May soon be time for a bump to Helena.

An exciting day on the basepaths:

BASERUNNING

SB: Doston 4 (7, 2nd base off Duran/Marcano, 3rd base off Duran/Marcano, 2nd base off Aquino, E/Marcano, 2nd base off Gonzalez, J/Marcano); Urbaez 2 (7, 2nd base off Duran/Marcano, home off Duran/Marcano); Devanney (5, 2nd base off Duran/Marcano); Marquez (1, 2nd base off Gonzalez, J/Marcano).

AZL Brewers Gold Box Score

Home runs from Aaron Familia and Francis Florentino and some late-inning David Blaine-level escapes from reliever Jose Romero were not enough to lift the Golds to victory.

I came away happy, though, as the best catching prospect in the system, Andres Melendez, made his season debut as he works back from an injury.
