Say you go get one pitcher... okay, cool. Then what? They’re all really terrible right now. Hook should be the sacrifice. DJ has to be chuckling a bit.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Reality is what has changed from last season? It’s coaching. Plain and simple. Coles and Johnson have been replaced by absolute dumpster fires of coaches. Small markets like Milwaukee can’t blow their window which is happening currently because of poor decision making.

I'm pretty sure almost everyone on this board wanted Coles fired at some point last season. I don't see what Johnson would have done with the Brewers pitchers that would help this year. It is entirely possible Burnes and Peralta are the same pitchers with Johnson as the pitching coach. The narrative just changes then to is Johnson just a one year wonder.

Coaches are scapegoats and nothing more in baseball at least for fans.

You think this team is on the cutting edge? Well prove it and clone the pitcher several times.

I think the pitching coach's importance is actually underrated around here-for the younger guys, that is. I know my results were often night and day simply with a guy that can point out a release point, falling off towards first, or even just make you laugh and calm down. Knowledge is likely all the same, it could just come down to personality.

This. People complaining about Stearns not making a move, what is he supposed to do? Add 2 quality starters and 2 relievers? Woodruff, Davies, Hader. That’s 3/13 of a good pitching staff. How do you propose he fixes the other 10/13?

And yes, it’s his job to put together a decent staff in the first place, so I that criticism would be fair. But it’s not like he can just pull a handful of quality arms out of nowhere.

I say we convince Dave Duncan to come out of retirement and take over as our pitching coach. One can dream.

How about Jeff Suppan

or Ben Sheets

or Dave Bush

or Graeme Lloyd

or Pete Ladd

or Rollie Fingers

or Chris Bosio

or Jerry Augustine

or Craig Coshun?

Ok so your thought is that the players were simply not that good to begin with? As Cincinnati has gone on to become one of the best staffs in baseball since Johnson’s arrival. Or as Aguilar and Shaw have become lesser hitters than Woodruff. There’s only one difference.

Fall guys happen when an entire unit isn't getting the job done. You think Dom Capers was 100% of the reason the Packer' defense couldn't stop anyone for years? Just the way professional sports is. You can't go out and replace an entire pitching corps.

True but we still don't have an explanation for why the braves and cubs were able to find a way to bring in the two free agent arms that were available for cash. That was a mistake

Agree that baseball coaches influence on a team/player is often overstated.

But it’s also offer understated, like here.

If they are nothing more than scapegoats, if it’s all on the player and not the coach - why bother employing coaches? Or why bother paying any coach more than another - they all have equal, small value after all, I guess?

Chris Hook’s job is to get the pitchers to produce at their best. That’s not happening, and many are underperforming compared to just last year. I’m not necessarily calling for his head, but if that’s not something he’s accountable for - what exact purpose does he serve?

From Adam McCalvy...

The Brewers have walked two batters with the bases loaded tonight, 10 this season. They're now tied with the Royals and Blue Jays for the Major League "lead." And for the second time tonight and the third time this season, the bases-loaded walk is followed by a two-run single.
Not just “at Night” anymore.
