2019-06-21: Reds (Gray) at Brewers (Anderson) [Brewers lose, 11-7 -- 5th loss in a row, but Yelich and Moustakas each hit more dingers]

That pitch was a strike and it sill hit Dietrich. Incredible. Rock is right, MLB needs to shut sown leaning into pitches.

It’s the umpire’s discretion. He could deny Dietrich the HBP.

They can, but they never, ever do. At least not that I hear.

Miley was a godsend and Chacin over performed. Stick those two guys in this mess and things look a lot different. In fact, they probably look a lot like last year.

Ok, Chacin overperformed why? Just because he did? You cannot say they have a talent problem now and then point to Chacin from last year to imply talent, not coaching was the difference last year when he is literally the same guy.

And Miley had pitched a total of 6.1 innings at this point for us last year.

There were plenty who doubted the Chacin signing based on him leaving a pitchers park. He is most definitely not the same guy as last year but there are talent reasons to explain that, not just because a coach left. I mean, did Chacin just forget what he was taught to the point that he can't do it now? That just doesn't make sense.

I think it has been pointed out that, given the bump in offensive production, the staff isn't performing all that differently than they did last year and they were bad then. Remember all the conversation about burning out the pen. The reference to Miley was about how they got better which seems to be the part of the season you keep referencing. They pretty much rode Chacin and Miley down the stretch and patch worked everything else. I just don't believe that they all forgot what DJ was teaching and just aren't capable of remembering what that was.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

David Stearns pretty much talking about Houser, Yelich, yada, yada ... nothing about the out-makers and run-givers ... every team has tough stretches, yada, yada ... talks like a robot ... that's what makes a great general manager, I hope!

This is before Shaw's strikeout in the 2nd inning tonight ... how long do we wait?

I figured the "safe date" for Hiura missing Super Two status as June 24. Real good chance he will get brought up before the next series.

Will also guess that Jesus is safe because he's out of options and Shaw is the guy who will be sent down.

I know it has happened at least a couple of times over the past few years. Here is one example...

When you have a rotation full of guys that depend on location and have little room for error, I would expect results to fluctuate. Luis Castillo is light years better than any starter we have. Gray is better. Roark is probably as good as Woodruff and we have nothing behind that except maybe Davies. I strongly disagree that this Reds staff is short on talent.

And yet, none of those 3 guys had great results recently up until this season.

The Yankees were willingly looking to dump Gray after posting an ERA near 5 for them in 2018. Castillo has dropped over 2 runs on his ERA and nearly a run off his FIP from last season. Roark was coming off two very mediocre seasons in Washington.

I don't disagree that the Reds have better talent in their rotation, but talent doesn't automatically equate to better results as we saw with all 3 of them coming into this year. Absolutely a pitching coach can make a difference in unlocking those results.

I absoltuely believe that having better talent will lead to better results. Why else sigh a Grandal or Moose if they didn't think having that extra talent would lead to better results. Roark has had a very good career and I'd argue that his last couple of years were probably better than mediocre (last year more so). Castillo has always had this pedigree. His numbers will come back to earth a bit but he always had TOR potential. Gray was pretty darn good in Oakland. That talent didn't just disappear. Mahle was a top 100 guy. DeScalfini is the only one that hasn't been pretty darn good so does the DJ magic just not work with him? Still, he'd instantly be our second or third best pitcher.

Literally a strike. Drill him for real next time.

If the umps don’t take care of this, then the Brewers are forced to drill him where it hurts.

lol

When is the last time you saw a Brewer pitcher drill a guy on purpose?

Those days are long gone except for a few guys who might still consider doing it, but they aren't wearing Brewers uniforms...

Josh hader is going to start rotting down in that bullpen. One can only dream the package he’d bring back at the deadline.

Sure, Stearns HAS to say they will snap out of it, they are right on the precipice of breaking out etc etc. My biggest problem with DS has always been what seems like hesitancy to do something. He could have a team call, tell DS what it will take, and DS will take weeks/months to decide if he wants to do it or not. This team is struggling NOW..if he doesn't do something NOW, by the trade deadline, they could be too far out that it won't matter, and then he will/should have to answer some questions.

The Sonny Gray/twitter trade talk between Stearns/Anderson/Schroeder was pretty entertaining. Like how Stearns said the Gray trade was never real close, and how the Lucroy/Mejia trade..."that one was a little closer." At one point I thought he was going to bring up HighHeat19.

Stearns has this job for life. He has no sense of urgency. He can lay out a 10 year vision and Mark A is going to buy it. The urgency we fans feel is not matched by the guy making the decisions so it's going to be a long summer.
