2019-06-21: Reds (Gray) at Brewers (Anderson) [Brewers lose, 11-7 -- 5th loss in a row, but Yelich and Moustakas each hit more dingers]

I've been beating that drum for awhile, but not everyone is convinced.

I've seen more pitching "guru" types come and go than I'd like to admit. All of them were the best in the game.....until they weren't anymore. Mezzone was great until he didn't have Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz anymore. If you want to blame this all on not having DJ, fine. I'll side with the talent level being poor. So keep beating the drum I guess.

I never said all. I'm sure it's a combination. But like I said, the talent level is literally almost the exact same as last year.

Miley was a godsend and Chacin over performed. Stick those two guys in this mess and things look a lot different. In fact, they probably look a lot like last year.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

The Brewers have gone from 4th in the NL in ERA in 2018 to 11th this year. The Reds have gone from 14th to 2nd. Neither team has great pitching talent. I would say DJ is a huge factor.

When you have a rotation full of guys that depend on location and have little room for error, I would expect results to fluctuate. Luis Castillo is light years better than any starter we have. Gray is better. Roark is probably as good as Woodruff and we have nothing behind that except maybe Davies. I strongly disagree that this Reds staff is short on talent.

And here Stearns sits...You want to shake this team out of it's funk?? Pull something off...NOW. If you wait until the deadline, it may be too late.

I have made my suggestions clear this week.

What do you suggest?

I know it’s a bit extreme, but really why even have Yelich on this team? This season is almost a lost cause and there isn’t much of a core to build around. The other best hitters on this team will be demanding big contracts and will likely be free agents. If we aren’t going to really contend within the next year then it’s probably worth collecting a king’s ransom for Yelich and hope we’ll be competitive in 4 or 5 years.

And yes, this is a serious thought.

Just wondering how you know he’s just sitting around. Inside knowledge? Are you in the meetings?

Dietrich sure knows how to get hit by pitch.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Ok, Chacin overperformed why? Just because he did? You cannot say they have a talent problem now and then point to Chacin from last year to imply talent, not coaching was the difference last year when he is literally the same guy.

And Miley had pitched a total of 6.1 innings at this point for us last year.

Until a new acquisition has been made...he's just sitting around to me. Making phone calls, checking in etc. Going thru the motions, but that's it. Every GM does that. It's part of their job. Stearns seems like the kind of guy that takes FOREVER to decide to pull the trigger on something. Scared money don't make money. Target someone(s) you decide you want, and stay on the phone until the deal is done.

Having meetings does nothing(with coffee and donuts talking about who you want to pursue, it's the same meeting every day)...activity and completed trades is action.

That pitch was a strike and it sill hit Dietrich. Incredible. Rock is right, MLB needs to shut sown leaning into pitches.

It’s the umpire’s discretion. He could deny Dietrich the HBP.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Did anyone catch the behind the plate view of the 2nd HBP? He literally stuck his arm out to get hit. The umpires are completely useless, they can't even get the zone right...what makes you think they even notice him sticking his elbow out. I think a Tony LaRussa style lesson is in order.

And yet, none of those 3 guys had great results recently up until this season.

The Yankees were willingly looking to dump Gray after posting an ERA near 5 for them in 2018. Castillo has dropped over 2 runs on his ERA and nearly a run off his FIP from last season. Roark was coming off two very mediocre seasons in Washington.

I don't disagree that the Reds have better talent in their rotation, but talent doesn't automatically equate to better results as we saw with all 3 of them coming into this year. Absolutely a pitching coach can make a difference in unlocking those results.
