2019-06-19: Brewers (Davies) at Padres (Strahm) 2:40 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 8-7 -- Crew blows 7-5 lead in the 7th inning]

Eye Black
I always thought the "we're still in 1st!" battle cry in the middle of summer is a little bit hollow and meaningless.

We constantly harped on this in 2017 and it meant nothing. In 2018 I think we were at least 5 games out in September and ended up winning the division.

First place in a tight division at this point in the season is completely and utterly meaningless other than being a talking point.

Don’t forget 2014, the ultimate example of being in first place for most of the season being meaningless.

If the Brewers don’t make some significant personnel moves or get some dramatic improvements from some of the current players, they aren’t going to be in playoff contention in September. The starting pitching is a mess, the bullpen is crumbling under the weight of frequent short starts, and Arcia has joined Cain, Shaw, and Aguilar as black holes in the lineup.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

MVP is for sure a 2 horse race in the NL. Nobody else is really that close to those 2 guys right now.

If you believe in bWAR it isn't even a 2 man race. Bellinger must be the best corner outfielder ever while Yelich must be worse than Domingo and Khris Davis.

DRS has Bellinger as a +19 so far this year in 524.1 innings.

If I had to call a winner right now, I'd probably say Bellinger, but it's insanely close. Both have good talking points and you really can't go wrong either way.

It's still early and there will probably be more clarity by the end of the season with one separating.

Is that really good? I have a hard time getting my head around a corner outfielder or 1B getting a huge boost in WAR from defense. The bWAR between the two is 6.0 to 4.2 right now yet offensively they are pretty similar.

To put it in perspective the next closest corner outfielder is Mookie Betts with 10, then David Peralta with 6. So yeah, he's just so far ahead of everyone else that it helps him value wise.

Braun dialed in. Good to see.

Grandallllllllllll!!!!

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
