1B Francisco Gonzalez was a home run short of the cycle and 2B Carlos Roa added a double and a triple, but a late collapse by Indians pitchers sent the co-op to their 11th loss in 15 games. The starting pitcher was Brewers' prospect Leony Rosario, who pitched well and allowed just one run over 5 innings.

The Mudcats' Southern squad lost a tough one, 8-7, in the Carolina League All-Star game (Box Score)

Mario Feliciano 1-for-4 (BB, run scored) and Payton Henry (1-for-2, two RBI) combined to catch all nine innings. Not sure if only one affiliate has handled all nine innings behind the plate in an All-Star Game anywhere for a long time now, that's pretty unique.

RHP's Noah Zavolas, Rodrigo Benoit and Matt Hardy all pitched. Benoit would strand an inherited runner, but allowed a run of his own the next inning.

Very cool that the Mudcats' had a cameraman on the field in Frederick. We suggest you go to their Twitter timeline this AM, see several highlights and hear Payton Henry mic'd up pre-game.

Sudden-Death Home Run Derby Decides Midwest League All-Star Game

Yes, you read correctly.

Box Score

SS Brice Turang 1-for-2 (double), RF Jesus Lujano 0-for-2, as was catcher David Fry. RHP's Logan Gillaspie and Adam Hill with brief, but scoreless mound stints. Gillaspie stranded two inherited runners, nice.

Voice of the Timber Rattlers Chris Mehring was on hand, here's his entertaining Twitter game thread.

Final: AZL Royals 12, AZL Brewers Blue 7

AZL Brewers Blue Box Score

While the Blues scored one more run than the previous night, they gave up 12 for the second night in a row to drop to 0-2 on the young season.

The offense received two-hit contributions from CF Arbert Cipion, SS Cam Devanney, and DH Victor Vargas. LF Jackie Urbaez was on base three times again, with a single and two walks. 33rd rounder Kevin Hardin, playing first base, doubled and was hit by a pitch in his pro debut.

Exciting young righty Alexis Ramirez has a rough stateside debut, allowing 8 runs, all earned, in 3.1 innings. This included a second-inning grand slam. Things will get better. Chinese import Jian Yi made his pro debut and fared marginally better, allowing 2 runs while recording 5 outs. Jeyner Baez, who was a catcher in the Nationals system from 2014-2018, was signed this past offseason and converted into a pitcher. In his debut as a full-time hurler, Baez acquitted himself pretty well by allowing an earned run in 3 innings.

AZL Brewers Blue Game Log

The guys managed to tie it in the third:

Final: AZL Mariners 9, AZL Brewers Gold 4

AZL Brewers Gold Box Score

Starting pitcher Wilber Diaz struggled with command, debuting reliever Mario Perez gave up a grand slam, and the offense couldn't dig out of that hole to follow up their opening day win.

RF Oswel Leones and 3B Victor Maria each collected two hits. We saw pro debuts from NDFA C Juan Martinez, 37th round LF Abimael Gonzalez, 35th round 2B Odrick Pitre, and 38th round RHP Eli Nabholz. Martinez, Gonzalez, and Pitre all went 1-4 with Gonzalez' hit being a double. Nabholz pitched a clean 9th.

CF Tyrone Taylor began his rehab assignment and went 1-2.

By the way, Mario Perez is the youngest stateside player in the Brewers' system. He doesn't turn 18 until next April.

VIDEO Highlights from this road game

Every player but Micah Bello (0-for-5, run scored) reached base via hit or walk. RF Michael Wilson (two walks) and SS Antonio Pinero (single, walk) reached twice. 20-year-old 4th year pro catcher Luis Avalo homered, the 5th of his career.

We were "gaga' over a very young Panamanian RHP in 2014 and 2015. If you don't remember Carlos Luna of that era, remind yourself. Now 22 and having missed all of 2016 and 2017 to Tommy John surgery and recovery, he dazzled for five scoreless in this one.

12th round RHP Arman Sabouri (Cal), made his pro debut, netting the save --

Cristopher Navarro called out on strikes.

Eddy Diaz singles on a line drive to center fielder Joe Gray.

Julio Carreras singles on a line drive to left fielder Edwin Sano. Eddy Diaz to 2nd.

Brenton Doyle strikes out swinging. Julio Carreras to 2nd. Eddy Diaz steals (3) 3rd base. Julio Carreras steals (3) 2nd base.

Yolki Pena grounds out, shortstop Antonio Pinero to first baseman Ernesto Martinez.

From the Sidelines: Young Vibes players hope to rise to the top

Danny Summers, Colorado Springs Gazette

Rocky Mountain Vibes players and coaches were introduced to members of the media and area fans during a festive brunch on June 12 at UCHealth Park. There was plenty of excitement in the air as team members (the Vibes are the Pioneer Rookie League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers) interacted in the banquet hall.

I sat at a table that included 20-year-old infielder Nick Egnatuk, the Milwaukee Brewers’ fifth-round selection in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft out of Immaculata High School in Somerville, N.J.

“Being a high school guy, a lot of people don’t expect you to succeed, but you have a lot of time to catch up,” he said. “You go from 18 years old and playing high school ball to pro ball. That’s definitely a big jump. You have to get used to it.”

Egnatuk is among many high-round draft picks on the Vibes’ opening-day roster. He played in Helena, Mont., last season, where the team was located before moving to Colorado Springs.

Four other players on this year’s roster were drafted earlier this month. The highest draft pick is Nick Kahle, a catcher taken out of Washington State University.

“This is exciting to go back and play,” Kahle said before the team’s opener in Orem, Utah, last Friday. “It’s been a few weeks, and I just want to go out and have fun.”

The Vibes’ roster includes two of Milwaukee’s top 30 overall rated prospects, according to MLB.com: No. 7-rated outfielder Joe Gray Jr. and No. 21-rated outfielder Micah Bello.

Gray Jr. spent his first pro season with the Arizona League Brewers in 2018, playing in 24 games. He was selected in the second round of the 2018 Draft.

Bello also played his first professional season last year with the Arizona League Brewers. In 39 games, he batted .240 with 25 runs, three triples, one homer and 15 RBIs. Born in Hilo, Hawaii, he was selected in the Competitive Balance Round B of the 2018 Draft.

The thing I liked most about talking with the Vibes’ players was their enthusiasm. They are not feeling slighted by being “stuck” in the minors for five, six, seven — or more — years. I ran across more than my fair share of discontented minor league veterans in my 18 seasons covering the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

One of the many upsides to covering the Sky Sox was that Pacific Coast League players were pretty much all major-league ready. The baseball you see will see this season will be good, but a world away from what you’ve been used to watching the previous 31 seasons when the Sky Sox took the field.

It was commonplace to see someone who played for the Sky Sox one night to be promoted and start in the majors the next day. That will not be the case with Vibes farmhands.

The Pioneer League is the lowest of the six levels of minor league baseball. (I am excluding the Arizona Rookie League and Gulf Coast League, where many of this year’s major league draft picks are sent to get their feet wet). The chance of any Vibes player reaching the major leagues is extremely rare. In fact, the majority of the players you will see here won’t even make it to Double-A.

Just how far away are Vibes players from The Show? Starting from the top and working our way down, we have, in order: Majors, Triple-A, Double-A, Class A-Advanced, Class A, Class A Short Season and Rookie Advanced.

To the trained eye, the level of play this season compared to major league baseball will be night and day. Double plays — usually of the 6-4-3 or 3-4-6 variety — will be made from time-to-time, but they will seem painfully slow.

Home runs will be at a premium as many of the players in the Pioneer League only switched to lumber from aluminum bats a year or two ago — or as recently as last month if they are playing at the professional level for the first time.

Regardless of the level of play, I plan to be at the ballpark a lot this summer. I hope to see you there.

Only games on tap for Wednesday are the two DSL contests and the Rocky Mountain road game, available via subscription MiLB.TV and the audio link, for Mitchell's Vibes call.

Given it's a Brewers big league late-afternoon affair, a perfect opportunity to focus on the Rocky Mountain kids tonight.

The two Maryvale teams are idle Wednesday, and if you were wondering, yes, they will face off against each other this summer -- four times, actually.

And it's about the closest we'll come to a "day off" all Link Report season long.
