Custom Stat Tricks?

JET15

Does anyone have any tricks they'd care to share on where or how they look up their favorite stats?

I use Excel with a bunch of web queries that run when I open the spreadsheet. It goes out and grabs specific tables from the HTML pages that I target and loads just that data into the spreadsheet. Other sheets I have in there grab just the stats I'm interested in to consolidate it into one nice sheet. It's easy to makeup your own stats that way too. I like the AB/HR stat to see HR frequency.

I do them for team stats and player stats. I'll even copy the consolidated stats into a few files for my iPod so that I can quickly access them anywhere I am. I usually have the player stats for the Brewers and their current opponent and the team stats/rankings.

I use web queries to calculate expected runs scored for all NL teams. I'll eventually use them to automatically calculate my series probabilities later int he year. I have a problem with them not running correctly from time to time. You have that problem ever?

Brian: Baseball Hacks looks good. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the tip

Russ: Yes, I do occasionally get bad results from a web query in Excel and it's very sporadic. I always assumed that it was something to to with the network or the site because I'd just re-run it and it always worked fine.

I wish the web sites would allow for more variables in what's included in their stat pages. I have to hit about 6 or 7 pages on ESPN just to get OBP in all of the splits I want to see. I suppose I shouldn't complain. At least they have them.

I really like the way ESPN allows you to filter splits by #1-#9 and by position. That can give you a pretty good idea of how well we're doing with the platoon in LF and 3B.
