Cody Allen?

Not saying it's a good idea, but a change in scenery might do him well...

Angels designated RHP Cody Allen for assignment.

It was a rapid fall for the Angels' Opening Day closer. The club brought him in on a one-year, $8.5 million contract and they will end up eating most of it. He gets the boot after registering a 6.26 ERA in 25 games. He struck out 29 batters in 23 innings but walked 20 and served up a whopping nine home runs. As bad as he was he never actually blew a save. He was 0-2 with four saves in four chances.

Allen was horrible for Clev. last year and is even worse this year. He got worse with the change of scenery. If the Brewers could get him to sign an AAA contract, maybe.

Over the last year plus, covering 90 innings, he has 5.10 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 5.53 FIP. I just don't think a contending team can give him a major league deal and a 25 man roster spot. Would be interesting as a minor league signing. Teams like the Orioles, Royals, Marlins could give him a major league minimum deal, but do they want to waste innings on him, get him turned around and then sign with someone else this off-season? Bad teams might just want to roll with their own players and evaluate who they can move forward with and who they need to replace. So if all the bad teams pass on him, he'd be interesting as a minor league signing. No way he could go on the Brewers 25 man roster. Anytime the FIP gets to 5.53 over a good number of innings, that's pretty much a MLB deal-breaker for me. There is just no way you can look at him right now and definitively say, "he's a better pitcher than Jacob Barnes."

Best Guess is Cody Allen will clear waivers & then decline any offer of a minor league assignment with the Angels. IMHO I think Cody is headed to Minnesota where he happens to have a working history with Derek Falvey..

For those unaware, while Falvey was part of the executive team in Cleveland, he was instrumental in putting together the advanced info (scouting, strengths & weaknesses of opposition batters) for the pitchers. He did that thru the 2016 world series. After the Series, Derek left & took the job with the Twins..

Now due to Cody's amount of service time (IF I understand the pay rules correctly) the Twins/ any team signing Cody this season would only have to pay Cody a pro-rated amount of the veteran minimum. Cody would still collect the rest of his contract money from the Angels (minus the amount being paid by the Twins/ another signing team).

Sounds like a win-win & a savey move if it happens & works out for the Twins... Improve the bullpen at limited money cost, hold onto the various trade assets for other needs.. If Allen does not improve, the Twins still have time & assets to make another move to improve the pen
