2019-06-12: Brewers (Woodruff) at Astros (Verlander) [Brewers win, 6-3 in 14 innings -- Brewers overcome 24 Ks with four long balls; Thames HR ties it in 7th & Moustakas HR proves the difference in extras]

Eye Black
This lousy team is trying to push to 10 over again. Can’t believe these turds.

If we keep winning, our owner won’t be able to break the lease and move to Miami.

Remove a piece of clothing from the Mark Attanasio cutout every time the Brewers win.

I'm probably in the minority, but I really expected this team to take a big step back this year. I still bet on them to win over 87 games. It's a running bet I have with a friend who is a HUGE pessimist when it comes to the Brewers. For each win over, I get 50 bucks, for each win under, he gets 10(because we always go for what he thinks is an optimistic number for me, I get odds).

I didn't say it at the time, but I expected to lose ~70 bucks this year when Knebel and Jeffress went down. I was real high on Burnes, Nelson and Hirura, thought they'd all have big years, not as high on Grandal(Though this was playoff related and even then mostly defense) and Moose. Just to take my predictions a step further, I thought Aguilar would build on last year, Arcia would bounce back and hit .265 ~18 HR's, but Yelich would be good, but closer to .300/.370/.470....and still I thought this would end up being a 80 win team with a sieve of a BP and a struggling starting rotation outside of Nelson(I thought he'd be back to a #1/2) and Burnes. I thought Davies would lose his spot, Peralta and Woody would be like young but worse versions of Sheets. Great at time and then fall off.

I think I can say I was close with regard to Arcia, so far pretty close to Hiura-though that's a very small sample size, and.....I think that's it. I don't think I could have been more wrong about this team. I thought last year was a perfect storm. Miley, Gio, all the other guys who came together....but this team just keeps finding ways to win. They keep navigating from one disaster to another, they overcome losing their most dominant reliever from last year..not their best, but most dominant in Knebel, Jeffres hasn't been close to as good, Aguilar and Shaw have been black holes and Burnes has had an ERA around 10 most of the year. And they're STILL in 1st place after having the toughest schedule to start the year.

Now I only admit this after being wrong because I don't want to vocalize my pessimism because I love the crew, but I am SO happy I was so wrong. The amazing thing is this team hasn't really played it's best outside of 4 or 5 guys on the team. I think our Manager and GM have to be one of the top 2-3 duo's in all of baseball. CC was supposed to be about 300 games under .500 at this point and we should just be coming out of our rebuild at this point. Instead we've got a young team again poised to content, a farm system that while not loaded looks to keep pumping out talented role players along with the occasional stud(Hiura now, hopefully Turang next) and there is no reason to expect this to be a short term window.

This has to be the best I've felt about the Brewers short and long term prospects since Weeks, Prince and that whole crew was all in the system.

It's not just you, OTB. I thought we would take a step back this year, too. And the odd thing about it is...you look at the individual performances and you think, well, we SHOULD be taking a step back. Cain has regressed, Aguilar and Shaw have significantly regressed, and the young pitchers besides Woodruff have regressed. Chacin has regressed. The pen has been okay, but not like last year.

Yet, here we are. I would say hitting homeruns in free agency with Moose and Grandal has been the biggest factor. Yelich is doing his thing again, but this isn't a one superstar can carry a franchise sport.

But it's definitely a well managed team, greater than the sum of its parts. You look at rosters like the Nationals and Mets, definitely less than the sum of their parts.

We're on pace to win 93 games, and I don't really have any reason to think that's not a reasonable goal at this point. In fact, one could reasonably argue for several reasons (easier schedule, adding Hiura again at some point, hopeful positive regression for Aguilar, Shaw, Cain, Burnes, Peralta, etc etc) that we should be performing better than what we've put on the field so far.

The Brewers leave Houston with a better run differential than they came to town with despite 32 strikeouts over the two games.

And 10 runs given up in one of the games.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

Went to bed after watching Braun strike out to end the top of the 10th, sort of expected them to lose at that point as you never feel very good about road extra innings games. Nice to wake up to a win and a big series split. I questioned whether they should bring Woodruff out for the 7th, thought they could lean on the bullpen with the day off but turned out to be a great call as we still had to use all our top relievers and needed them. I sure hope Houser can keep this up, if we can count him as a high leverage guy the bullpen looks a lot better.

I just read through the last 9 pages of this IGT after turning off my computer last night and just watching the game. Holy crap! This board needs some Prozac is a serious way.

Compared to most of the boards I peruse this place is docile.

The old Badger State Sports and Sportsbubbler sites were far more volatile.

The Brewers are a bit lucky with their W/L record to be honest, considering run differential. We probably have 2-3 wins more than we should. The bullpen hasn't been THAT good, so you can't simply say "oh bullpens can make up for run differential". That said, this team has so many ways it can improve. All the things you said, and don't forget trades. We can pretty much bank on getting at least 1 reliever from the White Sox. There are a couple other moves that can be considered as well.

As much as I want to watch baseball, I think the 2 offdays this week will be nice for the bullpen and guys like Cain. I personally think Cain just needs more rest days mixed in. I get the sense he's a bit dinged up and it's affecting him at the plate.

Yelich is regressing, only 2-for-6 tonight. I’m not one to panic, but I think we need to talk about finding a new right fielder. This type of production is unacceptable for a championship club.

That's the mark of a good team:

-win more games that you should lose, than lost games that you should win

-have more decently long (4-5+ game) winning streaks than losing streaks.

You were on the old Bubbler weren't you. I remember the knock down drag out bitchfests with Cheezer, Stix, and the like. I did like Cheezer's Sunday food spread pictures from his grill though. It was a rough and tumble site were usually anarchy ruled.
