2019 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

McDowell fits because of his stellar defense & benefit he offers team with helping the pitchers. He doesn’t K and gets walks. His bat plays enough to keep him an asset. Will he ever break into majors... eh not unless bat picks up but good system catcher.

Doubt Dillard stays behind plate. Let his bat play. Hat trying to teach a college advance bat how to catch. If he was a young high school kid, sure, but learning curve is big for catcher & takes away time from focusing on his biggest asset.

#Brewers 1st rounder Ethan Small revealed how he had 160 Ks: “I’m only 6-3 but my arms could sit on a 6-6 dude. I have extremely long arms and really big hands. My extension on my fastball is about a foot closer than most people’s. So my 93 (mph) is looking more like 95-96."

Brewers do have a type. Up the middle and professional approach. All their offensive picks walk more than they k.

Shortstop: Hamilton: .408 OBP 16% BB to 15% K

Center Field: Holt: .417 OPS 13% BB to 9% K

Catcher: Dillard: .450 OPS 20% BB to 17% K

Catcher: Kahle: .508 OPS 26% BB to 12% K

Catcher: Miller: .573 OPS 23% BB to 8% K

Pitchers also like guys who have ability to rack up Ks regardless of velocity. As they tend to say, fill up the strike zone.

Small: 160Ks over 96 IP. 15K/9 27bb

Kelly: 112ks over 52.2 IP. 19k/9. 37bb

Bennett 73ks over 73.2 IP 9k/9. 30bb

Floyd: 78ks over 50.1 IP 14k/9. 20bbs

Personally, I feel like we have been drafting much more tactically and logically the last few years as compared with that death spiral we were in for like a decade.

Ethan Small reminds me of one of those Cardinal type pitchers who ends up being a Lance Lynn or Shelby Miller before the injuries. You just hope you’re not in the Taylor Jungmann or Jed Bradley zone.

Antoine Kelly is a high upside type we’ve been craving. If he puts it together he could be that Triston McKenzie type prospect. I like the move with the catchers and Hamilton is a great pick for the upside he has relative to where he was picked.

I totally get the emphasis on up the middle talent. You get athletes and they can move around. Heck, Gorman Thomas came out as a shortstop.

But, in the future, I hope they work more on 3b. Sure you can get a ss to fill out and play there, but that’s a position that requires an athlete and a certain hit tool. The good 3b can be every bit the unicorn you might see up the middle. And an elite 1b bat never hurt anyone. What they lack in versatility and athleticism can be alleviated by the potential impact to the middle of your order.

We drafted lower and lost a couple of picks so it can be tougher to get a bounty. But you can see a method to the madness the last three or so years.

I like what the Brewers did in this draft, and I'm super impressed with Todd Johnson. I think we'll sign 30+ players out of this draft. I like how we're heavily involved with juco players.

I'm intrigued by what was done. But I've been burned by all the college hitters that thrived in Helena and failed miserable above that. I will find things to like about the kids this summer, but I will temper my enthusiasm for the future until some guys show results.

Festa, Richardson, Scott, and many others have burned me.

2nd-rder Antoine Kelly signs with @Brewers, full slot at No. 65 ($1,025,100). Wabash Valley CC LHP, led NJCAA with 19.1 K/9. 6-ft-6 , comes out easy, up to 98 mph. @MLBDraft

Ethan Small has now thrown a season high 117 pitches through 6 innings. I can’t imagine they will bring him back for the 7th inning, but in college baseball you never know for sure. His line so far is 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO (74 strikes, 43 balls). He has thrown a lot more off-speed pitches tonight than he did during the season (threw 79% fastballs during the season). His fastball has been mostly 89-91 mph.

Only a couple of years removed from TJ surgery, I’m guessing it will be a while until he is throwing a 110+ pitches in pro ball. I’ll be happy for him to move on to the College World Series, but I really hope they don’t ride him into the ground in the process.

Edit: Small did not come back for the 7th inning. They had a lengthy delay after a Mississippi State player collapsed in the dugout with what appeared to be a seizure.

Edit #2: They announced the player with the medical situation was LHP Jack Eagan from Wautoma, WI (also played at Madison College).

Not just “at Night” anymore.

How much work should we expect him to see in the College World Series? In college do they generally stick to the start every 5 days routine like MLB, or could they potentially have this guy pitching on 2-3 days rest and throw most if not all games?

I think that does happen in some cases, but it differs by team/coach. During the season, starting pitchers are pretty regularly on a once a week schedule.

Not to say it will be exactly the same this year, but last year Mississippi State played in the College World Series as well. They ultimately played 4 games in 8 days (Saturday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday). Looking at their starting pitchers at the CWS, Ethan Small pitched the first and the fourth games (so both Saturdays). They won their first two games, but had they been in the losers bracket Ethan may have pitched on slightly fewer days rest.

I didn't watch, but I see Small through 102 pitches in a winning effort. Not the greatest line. Miss St plays tonight, have to assume zero chance he would pitch today. Next game then would either be Thursday if they lose or Friday if they win. I would think he would pitch the next game regardless of win or loss today.

McDonnell is expected to send Nick Bennett to the mound as Louisville’s starting pitcher while JT Ginn will start for the Bulldogs.

Article

Looks like Small is not expected to start tonight on short rest, but Brewers' 6th round pick will got for Louisville. Ginn is a former first rounder of the Dodgers who did not sign.
