Not sure why I'm engaging in this yap-fest, but a "borderline strike" where a portion of the ball catches the plate IS a strike. It's not like a pitcher gets lucky when he hits the black and the ump calls it a strike. That's exactly what he's trying/hoping to do. You run the risk of not getting the call, but the gift strike to Stallings that missed the plate was closer to being a strike than the 2 pitches that split the black and were called balls to Archer.

That said, Chacin was bad today and the Ump was bad today.

That inning is why I was afraid to let Archer off the hook. Brewers should have played to score there. Short start made it tough but you may not get the chance again.

They couldn't though. You'd need to hang Houser for a long long run without taxing the whole pen.

Blaming the umpire is weak. Every single game there are calls that go for and against the pitcher on both sides. The situation is irrelevant. It's not like an umpire is going to all of sudden become a better umpire based on the situation. We aren't getting machines to call balls and strikes so this is the system we have. Chacin was horrible and put himself in the position to have a walk to the pitcher hurt him. It's the pitcher, quit nibbling and get after it. If he gets a hit he gets a hit. That is a far better outcome than walking the pitcher because you were "trying" to hit the black. He wasn't in a position to try and "paint".

Tonight, Chacin had very little idea where his pitches were going to end up. The notion that he was executing by hitting the black is questionable at best. Did the umpire help, no, but this score is on Chacin.

A team with an 8 man bullpen should never have to lose a game because they are afraid of pitching shortage. Tough call.

Some of these arguments are missing the point. No one is arguing that the ump was good against Archer, and no one is arguing that a borderline strike isn't still a strike.

The point was, in the real world, sometimes the umpires get the borderline calls right, and sometimes they get them wrong. Yes, in a perfect world he would have called them strikes. No, that doesn't always happen. When you are facing a pitcher not hitting half his weight, your success or failure should not be predicated on having the borderline calls go correctly your way. It's a pitcher. Just attack him. If he walked Josh Bell under the same circumstances I'd be a little more sympathetic.

Agree that it probably wasn't the right way to go, but I wouldn't have been opposed to it. Let Houser ride; if he isn't good the game was lost anyway. We can go get a fresh Burch Smith, Taylor Williams, and/or Donnie Hart tomorrow.

Perfectly said. The offense had momentum in that spot. Peralta never had to give them length.

Heck, for how bad chachin was pitching he might have been trying to grove the pitches right down the middle, but because of how bad he was tonight he might just have been missing badly but luckily still hitting the zone.

If Houser can give you 2 then it’s back to manageable, especially with the off days we’ve had. It’s not like we have been afraid to shuttle a RP or two when needed in the past. Even if it was 1st and 2nd I get him batting, but runners on 2nd and 3rd I personally would’ve taken a chance with a PH.

I'm pretty sure that is close to what was happening.

Game over. Wow. This team is tough to watch night to night. You never know what you are going to get pitching wise. Hitting wise. Defense. Base running is horrendous. Frustrating team. Oakland wins 10 straight. Brewers lucky to win 3 in a row with this crew.

10 straight to get 2 games above .500 and still have a worse record than the crew

I don't think the issue is the offense. I think you could visit a board for just about any team and they would complain about offensive consistency. The offense scores enough runs most every night. We just don't have the arm talent to sustain success.
