Brice Turang

Man, this kid is impressive. Only A ball but his plate discipline and contact are extraordinary for a kid his age. I feel like he has the frame to add some weight and hopefully gain some power. Excited to watch him develop.

Wouldn't surprise me to see a bump to A+ before the end of the year....maybe after the draft.

Exactly the kind of player the crew needs more of. As you say high contact, good plate discipline, make him a rare bird in today’s game, and with his good defense at short, a steal at #20 in the draft. Good chance to move up rather quickly too.

He has been playing a ton of 2B lately and has looked good with only one error in 162 innings.

I don't think he shifts off SS though. I think the 2b stuff is more to do with the fact that Coca is a young gun who's starting to bloom as well. Like Henry Feliciano in A+

Arcia hits arby next year. Would be nice to see him keep this up and take over in time to trade Arcia.

As many HR this year as the rest of his career. OBP the best its been since DSLat 17. Walks are up. Errors are down.

Are you unaware of this or were you trying to be condescending?

I’m not sure how anyone can look at Coca and say he is blooming.

Until early-mid May Coco was hitting .300 and playing great.... been brutal past few weeks and now hitting .182 in May. So that great start could easily lead to the blooming comment even though he has fallen off a cliff recently.

Coco is good defensive SS & Brewers love versatility. Every report I have ever seen has had good things to say about Turang and him being an MLB SS. To me, just adding more versatility to his game & allow others to develop as well.

Couldn’t this have been said of Arcia as 19-year old in Appleton? Glad to see it from him, just saying that I’d like to see him stay at Wisconsin for another 4-5 weeks at least. He’s at an age where I love seeing the results, but there’s no hurry

No.

Arcia was terrible at low-A. He had a .251 BA with a .314 OBP. in almost 500 PA's....

Arcia didn't "figure it out" until his breakout season in 2015 at AA

pretty sure that Arcia had a high contact rate, good plate discipline (BB:K) and stellar defense.

Compared to last year in Helena, Coca is noticeably stronger, is hitting the ball in the air more, laying off breaking balls more, walking more, and playing better D. And he just turned 20 a few days ago.

Is he a finished product? No. If you don’t want to say he’s “blooming” either, fine, but stat line scouting here doesn’t provide anything close to the full picture.

Turang and Arcia look like two totally different players. I've only seen Turang a handful of times, but he does not look like an kid who was playing in HS last year. I didn't realize there was a thread about him, but I just stated on another thread, he reminds me of a potential Trea Turner type talent.

I'll admit, I had to go back and look and was surprised by Arcia's BB/SO ratio, but I don't think that should diminish how great Turang has looked. And if he's playing some 2nd right now, that only adds to his versatility. Throw him in center as well. But I do think he'll stick at short and that his upside is as enormous.

Turang has now vacated low-A and is playing in Carolina.

He's already walked 3 times in 11 plate appearances.

If he bulks up even a bit as he approaches his 20's he is going to be a monster. It is easy to forget he is 19 years old.

Reminds me of JJ Hardy part 2.

I think that's just a default comp because he looks the same and plays the same position.

Hardy moved much-much faster through the system, didn't really produce much. Struggled in rookie ball, then for some reason skipped LowA, jumped to Brevard County and AA in his first full season at 19, then at 20 put together a strong season at AA.

Anyway, Turang is more athletic than Hardy. He doesn't have the same type or arm or hands defensively, though can probably cover more ground. And he(Turang) should hit for a higher BA and Walk quite a bit more. I think 30 SB's a year is far more likely than 30 HR's a year. Though possible he does both.

I like the Trea Turner comp the best. A Hiura/Turang combo atop the lineup could be really good for a while.

To be honest I don't think Turang is a SS long term, but that is just based on my eye test of watching him. He isn't the smoothest over there, doesn't have great range, and if he played 150 games at SS at his 2019 pace he would have 30+ errors.

Maybe he will improve, but he has a ways to go to be even average at SS. Which isn't saying much unless you really put up some big offensive numbers.

Arcia was a really good contact bat with a very good understanding of the zone coming up and plus defender (defense was obviously his calling card). But his bat to ball skills and approach don't match Turang/Dubon nor did his hit tool.

Turang is more Dubon than Arcia. Dubon/Turang both have great bat to ball skills, excellent understanding of the zone, SLG will come from lots of doubles/triples vs HR (whereas Arcia doesn't hit many doubles/triples but has more HR pop), solid arms and steady defenders at SS. Dubon will hit more HR than Turang most likely but Turang will have better on-base skills. Both have way more speed than Arcia too. Arcia is obviously better than both defensively when he's actually playing to his ability. By the time Turang reaches MLB he'll be similar to Dubon in that he'll be able to start at either spot up the middle.

Trea Turner is on another level than Turang. He could play both SS and CF at the MLB level, has way more HR power, will steal way more bases due to his elite speed but Turang has a better understanding of the zone, approach and bat to ball skills. Turner has a higher ceiling. The first time I watched video on Turang, which also happened to be on draft day since I've never heard of him nor pay attention to any build up to draft day, and it happened to be a video of him just taking grounders and turning DPs on any empty infield. I recall the first thought in my head after watching him field a few balls was this kid looks like a Jr in college who's about to be a 1st rd pick. Crazy polished for a HS kid. Then I watched as many hitting videos as possible and saw the same thing from him. You don't even have to look for it - it jumps right out at you and hits you in the face it's that obvious. He was steal at the time and is still a steal.

I hope you are wrong about that because, IMO, the ability to play shortstop is a big part of his future outlook/value.

Arcia was on pace for 29 errors in A ball if played 150 games. 30 at SS in A+. 16 in AA. 24 in AAA the year he was called up the final 2 months. He had 20 in 152 games in 2017 and has played at that pace since. Turang will be a steady defender.

Exactly.

I have yet to come across a scouting report on Turang questioning his ability to at least be an average defender.

Frankly, I would be very surprised if he fails to stick at SS.
