2019-05-28: Brewers (Davies) at Twins (Smeltzer) [Brewers lose, 5-3 — Crew strands 3 leadoff extra base hits and struggles against lefty starter making MLB debut; Davies pitches 6 scoreless innings]

Eye Black
Claudio needs to be released.

There has to be someone better than him on the scrap heap.

Nick Ramirez is doing pretty well.

I think people need to chill on Claudio. Everything that happened after the double-error by Hiura was a result of it. Our pitchers will throw better if our offense starts hitting.

This team is gonna have get a lot better offensively to compete with teams like the Dodgers and Astros, there the standard to be measured to and we should be trying to measure up to them if we want to win a championship.

Money is going to have to be spent between now and the deadline whether some of you like it or not. How else can we get what we need? Our great farm system?

Quality hitting first baseman.

Quality hitting third baseman( Shaw?)

Quality bench bat

Kimbrel/trade acq.reliever

Nah, we have four aces. We're good.

I am actually not overly concerned about our offense. We are still 4th in the NL in runs scored, even with an absolutely brutal schedule, and two of our best hitters from last year being giant pumpkins so far. Hiura is for real, he's going to give us much improved offensive production at 2nd, and we already have a massive offensive improvement at catcher from last year with Grandal.

Even if just one of Shaw or Aguilar turns it around, we can mix and match and still cover the infield by putting either at 1st and leaving Hiura and Moose to cover 2nd and 3rd. Thames has also not been bad as long as you limit him to righties.

Now 1st basemen are generally a relatively inexpensive market, so if you can find a deal that makes sense for a great price, there's nothing wrong with pulling the trigger. But we aren't sitting here with a massive offensive problem.

moose had a pretty bad night. K with nobody out and a man on third, fly out dp, pop to third with Braun on second one out, another k in the ninth. The first ab really stings.

the 2nd AB was 6" away from you declaring it a great night.

Massive problem no. Our runs are too dependent on home runs though, I think we can all agree with that. Can’t manufacture runs. Cant get runners in from third with less than 2 out. Last year’s offensive the same problem. Look what happens in the playoffs vs dodgers > can’t homer off good pitching enough to win. Changes need to be made.

Maybe Shaw can turn it around. But we need a quality hitting first baseman that doesn’t strike out 38% of the time, as a minimum trade get. If Shaw doesn’t tear it up then another bat too. Offense that can hit playoff pitching is a must if we want to win a championship.

Or the guys who have a capability of hitting have to hit.

But how long is that leash with Shaw and Aguilar?

Cain needs to get it going too.

With Shaw? As long as it needs to be. Aguilar? It's getting tighter.

Cain doesn't have a leash. He's free range. He'll be fine.

Just curious, how many 800 ops guys do you think we need?

Yelich Braun Grandal Moose are all there

Hiura Thames Gamel are 750 and up range.

Arcia is looking improved and he's the 8th hitter.

There are 120 players (100ab) in the MLB with an OPS over 800. Our team has 4 of the top 90. Average 3. Thames Gamel Hiura *on pace* Arcia Perez are in the top 180 which makes 9. Average 6.

Cain's OBP numbers have dropped but the offense hasn't been an issue.

4.87 is a little lower than we would like

4.37 almost a half a run too high

And that's not due to

Davies 2.19

Gio 3.19

Woodruff 3.22

Anderson 3.25

or even Chacin 4.88

Nor Hader Guerra Jeffress Houser or even Albers.

Burnes Peralta (largely starting)

Peralta in the pen 2.07 is resolved

Burnes 7.55 in the pen not so much

Barnes Wilson Williams (all 3 in AAA) is resolved

Claudio being used as a non-loogey is an ongoing problem.

Teams big weakness at this point is Burnes (who I want on the Woodruff plan, learn in AAA) and Claudio being used wrong. So we don't need a Kimbrel. We need 1 more pen arm and we've scooped some decent pen arms late in the season for very little. Team basically needs a Swarzak.

Agree with most of your take except for:

The crew if to win a championship will have to be comparable to the 2 best teams in baseball:

The dodgers and Astros.

Right now they are not. Both of those teams have much better hitting. Less home run reliant, able to score runs with out the home run, and much more disciplined hitters.

Let’s compete with the dodgers, have to get past them in all likelihood anyhow to get to the series.

They are better offensively than they were last year because of Bellinger and Verdugo. We need to be better. Way better offensively. We need last year’s Shaw and big production out of first base, as a minimum. Also be nice to have Hiura hit like a non rookie later in the year.

As far as the pitching, we have this year what we didn’t last year in a stronger rotation. Woodruff alone makes it stronger. Nelson could give us another playoff ace, we’ll see.

The bullpen needs one more shut down arm like a Knebel. Kimbrel could be that arm, but so could Rasmussen.

I’m assuming Burnes to be a shut down arm late in the year, Woodruff might need innings management so he could be in the pen for a bit also.

To get past a team as strong as the dodgers we’re gonna need that better offense and that overwhelming suffocating bullpen.

Counsell loves using his bullpen, only problem is it is not 2018 anymore and the bullpen has holes this year. I have never been into soft tossing relievers and can’t get on board with the Claudio acquisition.

People keep forgetting that the 2018 bullpen had plenty of issues till around the beginning of August.

You continue to pound this in every thread on this site. There is no money tree. We can't buy all the pieces you say we need. You need to accept that, if not, it's going to be a long, disappointing summer for you.

Geez.

We've entered and passed Khris Davis and Braun playing 3B territory. It's flat out ridiculous.

Geez.

Mark Attanasio Already stated holding money back for trade deadline moves.

If Smoak 3-5 mil depending on when.

Already paying Shaw/if not Shaw then another bat > 5 mil

Pitcher > 4 mil.

Bench bat > 2 mil.

3 bats and a pitcher > 15 mil.

2 bats and a pitcher > 10 mil.

These are max figures, probably be less and no Kimbrel.

Money Tree not needed.
