Why can't Wisconsin sports fans have nice things?

David Stearns could look like a hero this week by announcing a big personnel move for the Brewers. Wisconsin sports fans are understandably down in the dumps. With On Deck coming next weekend, announcing something to excite the fanbase would be a much needed and appreciated respite now that winter has officially set in with the end of the Packers' run.

I wish the NBA regular season meant more.

I know it was hard to expect a win tonight, but Wisconsin sports teams are now 0 for our last 6 in conference championships.

Then throw in UW losing I think 3 B1G title games in a row, 4 straight Rose Bowls, and losing two FFs (followed by two buzzer beater losses in Sweet 16 the next two years).

Yea, we need the Bucks to bring it home to stop the pessimism. Like, I went into last nights game with no plans of winning.

I really need the Bucks to win an NBA title this year. The state of Wisconsin needs it.

Not picking on you in general but I never get this kind of thinking by fans and WI fans in general.

I don't think it's unfair of adam to think that way at all. I think the point is that Wisconsin sports fans have had a LOT of success over the past couple of decades, but other than XLV they've typically been unable to actually close the deal. The Bucks are probably the favorite to win it all at this point, and that would feel mighty good to finally get a team over the hump.

Why? You have to enjoy the journey, but it is important to win championships once in awhile too. Otherwise, what are you working toward?

It's gonna sound a little hokey, but I've always thought the journey is the reward when it comes to pro sports. If the team is good enough to make the playoffs, that's kind of a bonus. I probably enjoy watching regular seasons baseball and football games more than playoff games, simply because I know that I'll get to enjoy this feeling again either tomorrow with baseball or next weekend with football. Cheering for a playoff team, while fun, is much more stressful.

In the end, what they are working toward is providing entertainment. That's really all it is in the end when you get down to it.

I prefer the journey more so than the ending. There is always a next season in sports and the journey starts all over again while a title would be a nice it is not something that I am chasing or all that worried about. To me sports is just entertainment and I am satisfied as long as the team is entertaining to watch the end result is a little bit meaningless to me.

I don't see how it's difficult to understand. If something happens over and over multiple times you start to expect it. In this case, it's getting close and losing so it's perfectly logical for pessimism to creep in. It seems to make simple sense to me. But IDK, hey to each their own.

I agree with Beard's last post though. I realize I'm in WI and my teams are the underdogs (other than NFL which is a balanced playing field) so I value and enjoy the ride. It'll be all the better if and when it happens. UW winning that hoops title would've meant so much more than any Duke title. Sticking with Bucks and Brewers as two of the worst teams in the league for decades will be all the more rewarding if and when it happens. The media driven Ringz obsession that has now trickled everywhere is a negative thing overall.

I think enjoying and appreciating the journey is crucial, for sure.

But I also believe you have to break through and win it all once in awhile to make up for how last night felt. To make up for how Seattle felt. To make up for how it felt when Yasiel Pulg homered in Game 7 of the NLCS. Even it is just a few times in your lifetime, you have to have those moments to appreciate greatness and appreciate being the 1 team out of 30-32 that rose above everyone else to make up for all the times you fell short.

You really do feel too, that the Bucks winning it all helps break a glass ceiling of sorts too. There's the potential the Bucks could win 2-3 titles with how good they are right now.

Not that it bleeds to other sports, but it does feel like these things clump sometimes.

It would feel fantastic if the Bucks win the NBA title followed by Giannis signing the supermax. I know it wouldn't be the same for all Wisconsin sports fans who maybe just follow the Bucks from a distance, but for me indeed it would be breaking a glass ceiling.

yup. And say that does happen where they have a little mini run with multiple titles, well it can help balance or make up for a possible dip from GB as Rodgers ages (and unlikeliness of getting a 3rd straight good QB) and if the Brewers don't break through or maybe take a step back from the last 2-3 seasons. Throughout the Bucks/Brewers doldrums, we've always had the Packers as good to make up for it.

For example, say the Bucks win it all this year and then come mid August the Brewers are out of it. You'll be able to think "oh well, not our year, but hey we just won that NBA title so whatever, it's fine"

I'll take one Bucks title. A lot of these supposed dynasties never get it back after one. Did Detroit win a 2nd with Rip Hamilton? I thought they got there and lost. Even the Warriors got dismantled pretty quickly. They made the most of their shots, but they were not supposed to be where they are now so quickly. Sure they'll be in the mix again but I don't think most saw this coming.

I'm more on the side of enjoying the journey and not being all caught up in titles, simply because I think luck is way understated in the whole process. The Steelers have played in 3 Super Bowls this era and the Packers have certainly been good enough to do that. It just didn't happen. All I hope for is teams that are consistently in the mix, and if not, trending upwards. It's no fun watching a team miss the playoffs for 20 years. Everyone gets caught up in figuring out why the Packers only got one Super Bowl, but sometimes it's just simply that you were there and it didn't bounce your way.

Unfortunately, I think we'll always look back on that 2014 season as one that really influenced how people view this era.

The Badgers losses in 14-15 hoops are the toughest for me (outside of the Brewers, of course), but it's so hard to really rationally expect a championship. Especially in college hoops, which may be the most random of all the sports once you get to postseason. Back-to-back Final Fours is just a massive accomplishment, and it's hard to imagine a national title changing, well, much of anything. That Badger team in '15 got the most iconic win the sport can offer--at the FF, against Kentucky, against the team with the best shot to go undefeated in 35 years. Stings that they lost a 9-point, second half lead against Duke, stings especially that they couldn't stop Greyson Allen, but that team is as good as you can be without winning it all.

I'm not even a Badgers guy and that loss in Final was absolutely brutal. You went from there being like 8 minutes left and accepting they were actually going to do it, to just stunned silence. That they took out Kentucky before it made it that much worse.

The Packers NFCCG in '14 was kinda the same game. Nobody gave them a shot, they really beat that team up for 55 minutes and then, it was just unbelievable. 5 turnovers. I don't think I'll ever experience a loss like that again.

The Bucks are definitely in the best spot right now, but they still have to do it. They could mow everyone over and win it all and Giannis signs after. They could get there and fall to the Clips or Lakers. Or they could get upset in the ECF and Giannis could not sign his extension. I don't even like to think about that, but all these are possible.

The Brewers have done a remarkable job staying competitive in the Stearns era, but they are always going to be fighting an uphill battle and they're just never going to be the favorite. The best that we can hope for is that they continue to find a way to get in and maybe, just maybe go into a postseason playing their best ball and go on a run.

I really don't know what to think of the Packers. With the key piece of their team being a 36 year old QB with his best years behind him, it's tough for me to think of them as a team on the rise. They got a ton of breaks this year, and a 10-6 record and divisional round exit wouldn't shock me next year. They've got a lot of weaknesses to fix, and it's hard to keep plugging holes as they keep showing up. They will probably do everything they can to put a championship team around Rodgers while they still have time, which is great. But the 49ers look like a really tough out for the foreseeable future in the NFC unless they really get bit by the injury bug or otherwise have bad luck.
