Milwaukee needs another high leverage relief pitcher to go with Guerra and Hader. Shane Greene from the Tigers has a one year, 4 million dollar contract. Would one of Nottingham, Dubon or Ray be enough to get him (or is that an over pay)? He will be a lot less costly than Will Smith and his 2017 and 2019 numbers look great. Milwaukee could upgrade just about every Tiger starting position.

First, Greene is still under Tiger control for next year as well so that would change the value calculation. Greene has another year of arbitration before becoming a free agent (unless he is released). So Detroit is dealing away 1+ years of control and the acquiring team gets him for this season and next (if not more should an extension get signed).

 

Yes the Brewers could help to upgrade many Tiger positions as Detroit is rebuilding. As you point out Greene has been very good this season & in the past. He is likely the best trade chip the Tigers have that they could start a bidding war over.

 

I believe it would take much more than 1 of the 3 prospects you listed, especially if another contender (in AL or NL) needs to add a piece to their bullpen.

 

He is a good target to consider but its going to take more than you think to get him.

I think you are significantly overestimating Greene here. He's pitched a really good 19 innings so far this year, but the last 2 years he's been about a mid 3s era reliever in a pitcher friendly park. FIP 3.13, 3.84, 4.61, and now 2.99 this year. Look at the return for Keona Kela last year. Kela is younger, has been more consistent than Greene in a much more hitter friendly environment, and has more team control...and only commanded Hearn and PTBNL. The Kela return is a pretty good template to look at for what Greene might command. That said, the market controls everything. If RH relievers are in short supply, he could command a lot more...or less if they are plentiful.
