Keston Hiura called up, Shaw optioned

And Huira gets optioned back down, presumably to make room for Shaw. Count me in on the large amount of Twitter fans that are not happy about this one.

My initial reaction would include a lot of words I'd probably get banned for saying so I'll refrain. But I HATE this move. Shaw was terrible on his rehab assignment, Huira has been hammering the ball for the past week or so. Just....why?

One hypothetical that can actually occur is a trade. Anyone want to take up a defense that Shaw has more trade value? I wouldn't think so. Hiura should be the one they should be focused on getting/keeping going. There are only so many ABs to go around and the deference should be to Hiura in getting them. They need that RH bat.

One thing not mentioned is that Hiura has been poor defensively. Needs to be a focus to get to his max value as a player.

I don't think they needed to make this decision today and explained why earlier in this thread, but even that proposal was just kicking the can down the road till the end of next week.

I think Shaw is important to this team and getting him going is important to the Brewers ultimate goals this year. I just don't like demoting your best prospect you've had in years after he's been really successful in his short stint with the team.

I thought he looked pretty good from what I've seen. I didn't see everything and saw none of his errors, but he's seemed generally capable. He has quick hands and good actions in general. Probably could use a few more reps to get more consistent, but that isn't much of a reason to send him down. He's better at 2b defensively than Moose/Shaw.

This wasn’t the reason for the send down. Never said that. Just an observation. Saying he’s better than Shaw and moose might even be a stretch right now for him.

I honestly hope Shaw is terrible for the next 2 weeks so we bring Hiura back. I don't want him to hit like 2 HR over the next 2 weeks while striking out 40% of the time and management to think he's close to breaking out. I fear they'll give Shaw way way way too much lee-way in trying to figure it out...and cost us too many games.

I'm surprised, for sure. Not angry though.

Shaw is an established veteran player and Hiura isn't. That's exhibit A for why this move is made. Hiura was called up when Shaw was injured, this makes sense in that context.

I'd have rather seen any of several candidates from the pitching staff sent down first though. Barnes and Williams don't feel like vital arms, at least right now. There's a case for Peralta going down and getting more regular work. At the same time I understand sticking to the overall plan of keeping 13 pitchers on the active roster.

It sucks, but I don't doubt that Hiura will be back. Maybe sooner than we think.

Well no way I'm rooting for Shaw to do poorly. It's a good problem to have if all are hitting. If Shaw gets it going and Thames gets hurt or goes through a prolonged slump, boom Huira is back. A lot of things can happen in the next few weeks to bring him back. If Shaw gets going it's only a good thing. One thing I thought of is that due to the timing he can't come back for Hous when they need a DH.

I don't think anyone here is going to like it. It's understanding it that makes this place a better community than Brewers Twitter.

I'm bummed. But the team is in a roster crunch, and then need to see if Shaw can rebound and be productive before making the unilateral decision to turn 2B over to Hiura on a permanent basis. Huira has to stay down 10 days. That ought to give the team a decent change to see what Shaw can do. The next 10 days, the team faces Miami for 3, Pittsburgh for 3, and a pair against the Astros bookended by two off days. Hiura would be able to come back up for next week's West Coast trip.

Is Moose or Shaw better defensively at 2B though?

This is a crap move.

The kid did nothing but rake.

Is player loyalty more important than winning ball games at the major league level?

As we have seen before, every game counts, and this is a stupid move.

Or we could hope Shaw figures it out so we have another great player for the future?

But no, lets hope Shaw sucks so we have Hiura up and only Hiura next year...Instead of wishing to have a good Shaw AND Hiura next year. Or one heck of a great trade chip in Shaw.

We should all want Shaw to do great. One, it means the team is doing better and two, it helps his trade value. He's an 800+OPS guy the last two years. Sucks that they lose Hiura's bat but he will be up shortly.

Dumb move. Hopefully Hiura’s agent doesn’t make an issue out of it. Just the wrong message to send a guy whos our performed all except Yelich.

First of all, if Shaw has an option, this move does have service time manipulation on it.

However, Hiura did strike out a lot. I'd take him over Shaw right now but I think Hiura could struggle a little bit here if he stayed up.

This staff has some balls, though. Obviously teams have to stick with bad/cold players on their roster, but Albers, Chase Anderson, Schoop, Claudio, Drake (for an extended period), Jennings, etc...I feel like other reactionary teams would appease fans more. They trust their guns and they think Shaw still has something left in him and they're not dumb enough to cut bait on Aguilar, Thames, etc. if they think those guys will be useful.

Someone will get hurt and figure this out. Or if nothing else, someone else will get "hurt" and figure this out in a few weeks.

I would have preferred keeping an extra bat on the roster for the time being. Hart, Smith, and Wilkerson can still be recalled at any time. Run the San Antonio shuttle with them, Barnes, and Williams and you can call up a new relief option on average every other day.

While I am not a huge fan of this move on a superficial level, I have nothing but admiration for the brass balls our young GM is showing by making it.

No kidding. He had to have known the fanbase was going to flip out.
