2019-05-11: Brewers (Davies) at Cubs (Hamels) [Brewers lose, 2-1 in 15 innings]

Eye Black
Putrid effort at the plate.

I would think Hiura will be up soon to play 2B, Moustakas shifts to 3B. Then just need to figure out 1B.

After what Aguilar has done the last two seasons it would be really really tuff to DFA him. However, you need more production out of 1B if you want ot win the division and compete for the World Series.

I'm fine with a hard Platoon of Shaw and Aguilar. Trade Thames as soon as you can get appropriate value for him. Moose to third and Hiura to second as you mentioned. Find a couple of high leverage arms for the pen and go to war.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Yeah, that would've been fine in the ninth. Do we all get to feel over crushed now because we lost a huge game?

Would you really have felt that much better about it if it had happened in 9 instead of 15?

Knowing we had a relatively rested pen, including Hader, ready to go for tomorrow, yes I would have.

I guess I don't know what you want them to do differently. Wave the white flag anytime a game gets passed the 10th? Yes it's early, but you still have to play to win the game, particularly against a team that you're very likely to be competing with record-wise down to the last few games of the season. It worked out last week against the Mets, just didn't work out today.

Hader is fine, threw 19 pitches today after 2 days off and I'm sure is fine if needed tomorrow. He was pulled early enough. Other than that Burch chewed up the vast majority of extras and is just going to be sent down tomorrow for new blood so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Neither team was very good at the plate. They got a few more hits but we hit into a boat load of double plays. It sucks to lose to them but it is really just one game. Hopefully it won't be raining Sunday night...

So you want to give the worst hitter of the 3 the most ab's by far, and get rid of the only one who's hitting at all? I mean, why stick with a .870 OPS at 1B when you can have the irresistible option of a hard platoon to combine for under .600, right? You just can't pass up an opportunity like that...

Just play Moustakas at 3B, Thames at 1B (Aguilar against LHP's only), and bring up Hiura. Nothing about Shaw's long-term history should make him immune to being optioned at this point. He's looking like a total flash in the pan, as is Aguilar, and it's really not unusual for journeymen to have a random good season or two in their prime. This team is a contender, and they can't afford to waste time on this.

Alternatively, go back to the great infield defense that helped the staff so much last year. Moose is better than Shaw at 3B, Thames is probably a little better than Aguilar, and Perez/Saladino are defensive wizards at 2B.
