Wisconsin Basketball Thread 2019 - 20: BIG TEN CHAMPS & BPI NCAA Champs!

Transfer Micah Potter, who didn't play a minute for OSU last year but stayed in school in order to stay on track to graduate, cannot play until the end of the semester at UW.

The NCAA is a total joke.

This is why I have no sympathy for the NCAA when it comes to players being paid. The NCAA simply does not care about the athletes anymore.

Yeah the term student-athlete shouldn't really be used anymore. Just call it what it is for the big time revenue-producing sports.

I'm going to laugh so hard when Hauser gets OKd to play at MSU this year but Potter didn't. I believe I saw a kid from Kansas played like 28 games last year and got OKd to play elsewhere this year. Then don't even get into how they let all the QBs transfer all over and play right away. The key seems to be playing for a blue blood name program in either sport.

Really what they should do is a media blitz on this and shame the NCAA until they cave. Jay Bilas would be 100% on their side, get on a few ESPN shows, Rome, etc. The public sentiment is so anti NCAA right now that the media people would eat it up. But, we know Barry is basically part of the system and isn't going to rock the boat

If the media went nuts with the Uthoff transfer stuff I cant believe they are not going crazy about this.

Funny that Uthoff media blitz is exactly what went through my head when I typed that, like minds and all I guess

On a side note of another UW example that got screwed. Remember Andy Van Vleet, the kid from Europe that ended up flopping for us anyway? He was denied a year of eligibility because he re-took classes while in school in Europe in order to get into UW. Basically, his grades weren't good enough for UW in certain classes and would be denied. So, he retakes them to improve them and then gets denied a year of eligibility for it. Another example of actually caring about academics being punished.

Looking forward to the opener next Tuesday. Everyone will of course be watching the Champions Classic, but UW-SMC is a really good matchup. Wouldn't be surprised at a pick 'em and would take SMC if the Badgers are more than a 3 pt. favorite. It's a great game to get oit of the chute, as it will provide a real test for a team with a lot of question marks and be a very good win if they succeed.

College Basketball came up fast...guess I need to renew my blood pressure medication. Though I don't think Kansas plays a real game after Duke until Christmas due to a pretty weak non conference schedule this year. So I guess I got that going for me.

I like the Badgers team this year. I think overall it does better than last year because they will have to play a lot more team basketball. I was never really a fan of how much they ran through Ethan Happ.

Badgers underdogs on the neutral. +4.5. I don't know how confident I am in Wisconsin winning, but in a game that will probably be played in 65 or so possessions, I'd take the points. Looking forward to a good game.

The line started at 3 I think...so the money is moving fast towards SMC.

SMC is 20th in the country. Should be a good measuring stick.

I have no idea on it. I know SMC is solid but they're still mid major. Gonzaga usually beats them handily, but of course they do hang sometimes. Tough to know what to expect out of UW, I homer bet UW and the under just for the entertainment. We'll see.

As Plush said, I also was annoyed with all the iso stuff for Happ. He was sooo good though that I get it, but I also hope having to play a team game again brings back the ball movement that made FF teams so good. Obviously I'm not saying this team is anywhere near that, I just mean the quick passing/motion Spurs type stuff that team was doing. Key word for is "hope", I'm not all that confident

Early basketball season is so meaningless. Having an experienced team is usually a ticket to success for obvious reasons. Freshman are a shell of what they will actually be by mid season and especially March.

Typically I treat it all like preseason until conference play. Then I start to care about results. Non conference games before then are a tune up and get the team to gel.

From a major conference perspective, I agree completely. It is way different for a school like SMC, though. Even A-10 schools play their most meaningful games in November and December. Without wins against the few Power 7 schools that will schedule them, those teams have no shot. My least favorite part of the CBK structure...

Tough loss. Had chances to extend the lead late. Missed some free throws. Good effort overall. I think it's one of those games that helps down the line. Just need to find an answer on big possessions.

Glad to have hoops back and happy for SMC. I'd rather see a Badgers win, but tonight's result is probably good for the game long-term. Gives what should be a quality win to a team that would probably deserve an at-large over mediocre Pac-12 filler but wouldn't get a look without it.

Only 1 game but this Badgers team looks like they are a year away from being a threat in the Big 10. Looks like a team that will make the tournament as the 5th/6th place team in the conference.

Reuvers looked like he took a step forward.

King with 6 points and 4 turnovers isn’t enough. I really thought he’d be a scorer in college. He’s just never lived up to it yet.

Wahl looks like he needs to red shirt. Not sure how the basketball rules work with him playing tonight, but he struggled physically any time he got in traffic.

For the game itself I thought it was really odd for WI to play D that last possession with only a 4 second differential. Even if you get a stop and a rebound you have to go the length of the court in about 3 seconds. Without the NBA ball advancement on a time out you need to foul there.

The college basketball structure is about as good as it gets realistically. The system these days definitely gives you a chance without the power conference wins. Does it make it harder? Maybe, but it should if you play crap competition all year. You always have a chance because winning your conference championship gets you in. If your resume isn’t good enough without that and you can’t win your championship do you really deserve in?

These games are great for them. They get to play power conference teams at their worst and are typically ranked based on where they should end up, not where they start. I don’t want to say they are cheap resume wins...but they don’t really reflect anything about a team come March.

I do agree they mean way more to those teams than they do the power conference team. At least usually...in this case it gave Wisconsin a good chance at a Top 25 win on the road. Arguably a more important game for Wisconsin with the formulas they use to strengthen big road wins.

This is the kind of game you wish they'd played in like two weeks. Hard to say anything in game #1

Always sucks to lose a game like that, but for game #1 against a solid opponent, not a bad start to the season. It would really help to have Potter around right now because this team needs help off the bench big time, but the Reuvers/Trice combo flashed some brilliance. Aleem Ford's agressive yet under control drive to tie the game with ~1:00 left in regulation was really nice to see, hopefully we get more of that as the season goes along. Wahl is an interesting freshman, he looked overmatched physically at times but I could see him getting increased minutes down the road. Looks like a player

Excited for this season overall - as much as I loved Happ, I think this team will be more consistent offensively without having to work everything through him, and hopefully the team FT % improves as well.

The latter, yes. The former, not looking that way so far.

Happ's ability to distribute the ball and create open shots for others is underappreciated.

Happ was a great talent, but he played a BB style from 20 years ago. I'm also expecting the flow to look better this year, but it's pretty early yet.

25 fouls called in the first half of the Wisconsin game. Yikes.
