"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

This might be my favorite non conference game ending of all time. Start it at 3:39:

My Dad is the only person who could verify this but I called the Georgia State loss and actually rooted for it. I wanted Soderberg out and predicted he’d get out coached by Lefty which he of course did. I figured if they won a tournament game there was a danger of him remaining HC. After the loss I told Dad ok now they need to get Bo Ryan.

Did you make a similar call related to Coach Gard?

Hah no not quite.

Big difference, though. Soderberg took a final four team that returned mostly intact, to a 16-10 record and got bounced in the first round of NCAA. Gard took over a NCAA runner up team that had lost a lot of talent and struggled for a while, but they rallied to finish strong and make the sweet 16.

That Final Four team was 8 - 8 in conference play. The year Soderberg was head coach they went 9 - 7 (18 wins overall). Ultimately I was fine with letting Soderberg go, but that Final Four team was kind of lucky to get as far as they did. They had great matchups the whole tournament.

2000 Wisconsin was top 20 in Sagarin and RPI and had played the toughest schedule in the nation; lucky sure, but they were a better team than their raw record and seed. And most of that team besides Penney and Duany were back the next year for Soderberg with another season of development.

Penney was mostly definitely back...he wasn't really a part of the FF team as a frosh...but he was a part of the aforementioned '03 team since since I tried to help hoist him toward the Kohl Center roof...

Jon Bryant really lifted that 2000 team in the tourney. Hot shooters change everything!

Is Kirk Penney the first Oceania guy to start the trend? I know he's a Kiwi, but it feels like Randy Bennett saw him at UW and then was like, hmmmm wonder if I can get a bunch of these guys to Moraga to play West Coast Conference basketball.

Indiana's only offense all year has been offensive rebounds.

Another great game from 2011. UW down by 15 in the second half and Jordan Taylor almost single handedly leads the comeback against #1 OSU for the win.
