July 31- The Ultimate Deadline

rickh150

With mlb rules changing with the deadline this season, July 31, 2019, is the biggest trade date in the history of baseball. No August deals, no waiver wire pickups.... just July 31 to focus on for all contenders and rebuilders.

A few predictions:

-We should see a lot of activity in July, but I am guessing that trades begin even earlier in late June. About ten teams know that they are out of it already and would rather deal players early to get more prospect value back by trading earlier in the season.

- GMs will be playing a higher stakes of poker on July 31. The negativity of not getting a trade done for free agents to be has never been as great. Not dealing your semi talented FA to be to a contender now has no backup plan in August with the waiver process. This should allow contenders to part with lesser prospects than previous years when making deadline deals.

- Bumgardener will be dealt to an American League team in June.

- The Brewers will get a couple serviceable arms at the deadline, bypassing better options in free agency or trade, and they will not have to give up much.... think Gio or Krod part 2.

Yes, agree no FA signing, it’s too early to know what we need by trade, but IF Nelson helps as much as I think he will, and there’s no catastrophic injuries, maybe a small move or two, to supliment a very strong team. I believe by mid July Peralta,Burnes, Nelson/woodruff, Sanchez?, Perdomo?, Rasmussen? Would mitigate a real need for a serviceable arm, and I don’t see Stearns giving up what would be needed to land a colome or will Smith. Just not seeing any glaring needs that can’t be filled internally, although it is a little early to know for sure.

Guessing Stearns will do what he's always done: pick up a cheap, older reliever who's having the best season of his career.

Not sure we have the prospect capital to make any big splashes (unless we trade Keston Hiura which at this point I'd guess he's more or less untouchable), but also not sure we have a ton of flexibility in our 25-man roster to make any big acquisitions either.

Honestly the best thing this team could do to get better at this point would be to sign Craig Kimbrel, but guessing that's not likely to happen.

I’m glad you said what I didn’t/couldn’t say without irritating the masses. But I’m hoping for the slim possibility of Stearns not wanting to lose another pick and the teams that really want kimbrel just won’t spend the $ because of the tax. And the one team that needs him the most the braves remain steadfast in their greed.

The longer he sits around without a team the easier it is for the Brewers to sign him if he's willing to commit to just one partial season.

Maybe, but the higher the AAV the more it would hurt the teams with tax issues, and then you have the braves, whose corporate ownership might relent on a one year.

I don't think they're in a hurry after how things have settled down a bit. I give them credit for not over-reacting to the staff getting shelled in April by a bunch of top offenses. I would have freaked out and signed him if I were running things.

The starting rotation has settled down a bit. There's still nobody in the bullpen I trust in a close game other than Hader, and he can't do it all by himself.

I don't think there's any chance of Kimbrel coming. He wants a multi-year deal. I'm betting lots of teams have kicked the tires on him for just a 1 year deal and he's bent on getting the big, multi year deal. If he can get it, good for him. But I don't think it's going to happen, at least not this year. If he hasn't signed yet for just this year, I don't see it.

Really?

How about Junior Guerra?

How about Corbin Burnes?

I don't trust Albers or Claudio. They definitely could use an upgrade over those two. Maybe it will come internally. They've won 7 in a row and looked good doing so, so there don't appear to be any major flaws right now. But that could change.

If other relievers are doing their jobs, Claudio can resume being a LOOGY, which he’s been effective at and was the reason the Brewers paid a significant price to acquire him.

Is there a list of minor leaguers who need to be added to the 40-man next season? Like last year, those might be candidates to be included on deals.
I dont believe anyone has posted one yet. This is the running list i keep. I'm sure I'm missing a few but it should be relatively accurate.

There are 3 I think we must keep and then 10 maybe's. This list isn't as much of an issue as it was last year, though it would not surprise me to see some of the maybe's in trades. It will change as the season goes on due to player performance. I'm sure there are prospects in the "others" that people will think we need to protect as well.

Must Protect: Z.Brown, Ray, Erceg

Maybe Protect: Devin Williams, Joantgel Segovia, Luis Aviles, T.Grisham, Coca, M. Sanchez, Webb, D.Brown, T.Jankins, W.Wilson

Others: Tristan Archer, Nattino Diplan, Tyler Spurlin, Tucker Neuhaus, Carlos Leal, Carlos Luna, Carlos Herrera, CJ Hinjosa, Drake Owenby, Nate Griep, Max McDowell, Jake Gatewood, Nathan Kirby, Bubba Derby, Cody Ponce, Phil Bickford, Quintin Torres-Costa, Jon Olczak, N.Walters, Sibrian, J.Lujano, Pinero, Hummel, Z.Clark, N.Rodriguez, C.Roegner

Spotted this on BR & thought it should be shared (in its entirety)

Bumgarner’s No-Trade List

Ken Rosenthal

@Ken_Rosenthal

Madison Bumgarner’s eight-team no-trade list, per sources:#Braves#RedSox#Cubs#Astros#Brewers#Yankees#Phillies#STLCards

Bumgarner chose teams strategically; list comprised solely of contenders that might want to acquire him from #SFGiants, not teams he wants to avoid.

So he just doesn't want to get traded at all, even to a contender?

No ... he wants to partially control which contender he gets dealt to.

Ok yeah. I guess that makes some sense. Would be hilarious if a surprise contender, like say Minnesota, gets him though.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

Plenty of teams in contention not on his list. Rays, Twins, Indians and numerous NL teams on the fringes. Diamondbacks, Mets, Padres... his list could ultimately keep him off a team with a better chance at a championship.

I'm sure that mainly he just wants to get paid to waive his no trade clause so he chose teams that would want to trade for him.
