I waived Travis Shaw from one of my fantasy teams today...

...so when he goes on a major tear in the next week or so, I will be responsible.

You are welcome!

Platoon players generally aren't worthy of rostering on a fantasy ballclub but can still have tremendous value in reality. If Peraw/Sherez can put up .275/.330/.500 I'll be happy.

Travis Shaw currently has a lower BA (.174), OBP (.259), and OPS (.565) than the Orioles Chris Davis. He also isn’t too far from surpassing Davis in K% with Shaw currently sitting at 31.1%.

Wouldn’t be too sad to see Shaw end up on “Injuried List” to get some time off. Clear his head & fix garbage swing. Plus Hiura gets to come up which makes it an even bigger win. Slide Moose back to 3B.

This is the Shaw Boston saw in that 2nd half of season that inspired them to just throw him into the Thornburg trade. He has potential to bounce back again & be as productive as he was in 2017 or even 2018 which was okay but when winning matters, hard to just bit the bullet & continue to let a guy bring you down. With Hiura & Erceg in the wings, Shaw needs to figure it out or he will be on the move.

If it wasn’t so much more expensive I’d much rather have Moose locked up & part of this team as 3B moving forward. Shaw is still cheaper & controllable which makes it very unlikely Brewers resign Moose to longer deal & trade Shaw. They could platoon Shaw at 1b as well next year with the other blackhole of a bat in our lineup so far this season & keep both.

I just have way more faith in Moose. Even when he is slumping he isn’t terrible. He’s just kind of very steady. When Shaw slumps, he is just brutal & hard to watch.

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

Moose is putting up career best numbers this year (or pretty close), so I think there is probably a little regression due for both of them in opposite directions. Shaw is coming off a season where, if he had regular BABIP, he probably would've gotten MVP votes, and a very strong year before that too, so it's hard to cut bait after only a month or so.

Shaw's kinda basic peripherals (hard hit %, ground:fly ratio) look pretty much in keeping with previous, more successful years. Contact seems to be the issue, as his K-rate has skyrocketed this year which is really concerning.

Given the realities of Major League contracts, I'd guess that Shaw has another 3-4 weeks to figure it out before the Brewers just can't keep Hiura down any longer. If Shaw is still struggling THIS much by then, then some infield shuffling might be in order (Moose to 3B full time, Hiura to 2B). For now, I'm not ready to cut bait on one of our most reliable bats from the past two seasons when he's only 29 and still controllable.

What I find a bit worrysome with Shaw is that so much of the decline comes from swinging and missing on pitches in the zone. In his past 4 seasons in the majors, he's consistently made contact on 85-88% of swings on pitches in the zone, so far this year this is down to 71%. Overall contact % is down from 80 and 81 the past two years to 68% now. Swinging strike % has rocketed from 8 and 9% previously as a Brewer to 14% now. The swing rate basically hasn't changed at all, the strike zone discipline is as good as ever, he's simply missing pitches he should be hitting. A quick look at the heatmaps would suggest that it's mainly up in the zone that the misses come, but it's down overall except low and inside. And it seems to mainly be fastballs he performs worse against; the pitch mix against him hasn't changed more than a few % here and there.

Now why this is happening, and how to fix it, I couldn't tell you. Loss of bat speed? Different stance? Not picking up the ball as well? (Though that would likely impact swing % too, and it hasn't). Whatever it is, we can't have this many players slumping at the plate. And we probably won't, but I'd rather see it pick up soon.

If taking him off your fantasy team is what it will take to get him going, yes - thanks! :laughing

For fantasy I think it's the right move. With his struggles and that he sitvs vs lefties it just makes sense. He was a guy I avoided this year due to sitting vs lefties.

Sidenote, I cut Matt Carpenter in mid to late May last year when he was hitting like .100. Basically right before the figured it out and want on a tear. I just couldn't keep losing games while I waited, obviously it was a mistake but still got 2nd place. He looked so lost last year before he had that crazy hot streak. After seeing that I was surprised STL gave him a big extension. He's started very slow again this year. IDK, that contract could be a burden for them.

I'm still holding onto him in my league, so his continued struggles could be my fault at this point. :embarrassed (although I may be immune to the curse seeing as I've had Yelich the past two years as well)

From a fantasy standpoint, his ceiling is still too good for a guy that qualifies at 1B, 2B, and 3B for me to let go of yet. As a bench player he offers a ton of flexibility and is better than anyone I could grab off the scrap heap at this point.

The league I'm in is a NL only 11 owner rotisserie scoring league. So a guy like Shaw will never get dropped unless he gets benched or sent down. Anyone who in line to get at least 300 ABs is usually owned by someone.

edit: Just looked him up. He is also Long termed in by the owner who has him in our league and so he would have to pay a LT drop penalty to drop him.

Maybe you should pick him up and drop him again. Though his single tonight was pretty nice to see.
