New Music

I wish I could find some new music that I actually liked.

I'm not a fan of anything having to do with rap, hip hop, dance, or any music that doesn't incorporate guitars, actual drums (not something electronically replacing an actual rhythm section) and rock and roll. Rock and roll seems to be a dirty word these days, which bums me out.

I'm looking forward to the new Sammy Hagar effort with his band the Circle...

Not sure if this counts as "New Music", but enjoyed the 2 singles released by the Raconteurs this year and looking forward to hearing the full album that is supposed to be released in June. I'm a big Jack White fan. Although I was not thrilled with his last solo effort.

Some of the kids that work for us listen to K-pop. It has to be the single worst genre ever. I'd listen to country or muzak over that stuff. Then again I'm 55. If I like the same music as teenagers there is probably something wrong with one of us.

Thank you for being 55 and not liking country. Seems like 90% of the people I know that are around my age (I'm 53) like country. I don't get it. You grew up in an age where we listened to The Clash, REM, Bowie, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Queen, Beastie Boys, etc...all this rebellious stuff, and you now like Country? Huh? I realize most people mature and mellow and become less rebellious as they age (I sure have) and with that your taste in music may change. I don't listen to that music I listed as much as I use to, but Country just seems so uninteresting and unoriginal to me compared to what I grew up with. Same formula - Pickup trucks, blue jeans, beer, the American Flag, your small hometown...put it in a blender and have a male with a deep voice or a female with a twangy voice sing it.

Sorry to the country music fans out there. Yes, I know, I'm oversimplifying it...but still, just not my thing and I just have a hard time understanding how that is now the music of choice for many people my age.

Eh, modern country isn't anything like the classic stuff, anyway. Modern country is just regular rock music but with the words "tractor" and "beer" thrown in every now and again. And the branding of it all is more insulting than anything, as if rural folks can't even show up to formal events in anything better than blue jeans and your best Tuesday button-down. But I guess that's what happens now that all music is made in a factory somewhere.

The Tallest Man on Earth came near me, but I didn't feel like driving four hours to see a concert by myself. But he's probably become my favorite if you're into alt folk or folk-acoustic stuff.

It's more pop or hip hop. When I'm in my wife's car and forced to listen to county music I can never really be sure if I'm listening to a country station or Top 40. Lyrically, it's all just really bad parody of what people make fun of country music for being.

I’ll chime in. Regarding country I agree with what’s been said about modern “country” but the stuff that is current and popular is mostly pop music for kids. There are some great current artists in the genre. For anyone looking for something current but meaningful or at least original and well made I have a few suggestions. Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Brent Cobb, Tyler Childers, Jason Isbell and Margo Price. All current and worthwhile. I should warn that Tyler’s lyrics on a few tracks detail some high risk behavior some might find inappropriate. I certainly wouldn’t play it at work.

I was excited to see that Angels & Airwaves is back and their new single seems like classic Tom DeLonge.

A few established indie rock favorites have new albums out--Andrew Bird and Local Natives. Some great tracks on both.

Chris Stapelton is really good.

AK - great post! I agree, there is finally some country artist coming out again that are legit. Musicians making music, not trying to be famous.

I don't listen to much new music anymore. There is so much music out there, you can just keep digging deeper and deeper in to an artist, genre, or time period. I've been doing that with Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead over the last 3 or 4 years and it's been so cool.

Do some rock and roll with the Struts.

Start with this live rendition of "Dancing in the Dark" (featuring Tom Morello on guitar).

Wow! How have I never heard of this band before? That was great!

As a suggestion of something kinda sorta similar, I'm a huge fan of Brian Fallon, formerly of The Gaslight Anthem/The Horrible Cowes.

I’m big into Mumford & Sons. Their latest album I like, has moved more away from folk sound a bit to more Coldplay like. However, Judah & the Lion is very interesting band if you like old Mumford. They do really good job mixing it up and have just a different sound. New album just came out. If you don’t like that kind of sound with the banjo & mandarin mixed in probably avoid. For both I prefer studio or acoustic sets on YouTube that gets ride of the radio sounds & you can enjoy their talents as musicians more.

Stapleton his outstanding! True musician with great sound that has been lost with pop country taking over the genre.

NF is a rapper that I really like. Has that Eminem fire and passion but very good lyrics & purpose to songs unlike most of new rap that is repeating same lines that mean nothing of value to 99% of the population but have catchy beats.

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

I think it's a couple of years old but have been listening to the latest Unsane album, a band I used to get into on the 90's that I had forgotten all about. One of the great noise bands, always great to see bands like them are still touring and putting out records. Other than that I think a new Mastodon record is due out this year, one of the few bands I still keep tabs on. Sort of embarrassing how little new music I listen to considering how much time I spent in the 90's going to shows and buying new records.

I don't care for country either but friends whose music opinions I respect are into Chris Stapleton and I am sure there are a few other that are good. I am sure there is lots of new hip hop I would like but if I am in the mood for rap I am more likely to look into some older stuff that I missed at the time rather than looking into what's new.

Not really being that familiar with Chris Stapleton, I decided to listen to some of his stuff on You Tube after all the raving about him here. Listened to parts of 4 or 5 tracks and yes, that's not the type of country music I was referring to or that I tend to hear in bars from time to time (that I don't like). That music seems a lot more bluesy and closer to country rock from the 70's or 80's, like the Allman Brothers or Lynard Skynard (although, was never a huge fan of Lynard Skynard). Some of it even sounded like it could have come from Springsteen. The video for "Fire Away" is really well done and captivating.

I've been listening to more rap music since I'm starting to work out. Ordinarily don't like rap because of the content and language, but I like NF a lot, too. Really smart lyrics and clean. Propaganda is another guy you might want to check out.

Witt Lowry & Ollie are two other ones I like who are similar. It’s completely coincidental they are all white rappers. They just rap in a style & lyrically that match things I can relate to. If I’m in rap mood I can still throw on J Cole, Lil Wayne (way he uses language is fascinating) Kendrick Lamar or Big Sean. Strongly dislike most rap my students listen to. Meaningless lyrics with big beats with small hook that plays over and over.

My Spotify is just loaded with playlists from ton of genres ( I can’t have playlist that mix them, OCD that way) I go in big waves for week or two on a specific genre & then switch.

Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell are "next level" stuff. Simpson is really pushing the boundaries of country music and Isbell is one of the finest songwriters in any genre.

I was looking forward to Tyler Childers new album for months. It dropped on 8/2 and I made it a big point to get on WiFi and download that thing. His debut album killed and number two named Country Squire...if you enjoy anything country you’re going to love it. My special lady wiggled her hips to the first track and I’ll never forget the moment as long as I live.
