Brewers sign LHP Gio Gonzalez

Nothing says "Let's throw crap at the wall" quite like constantly shuffling guys between SP and RP

For sure. I feel like this started from my post that was reliant on the guys we having now at least stabilizing the rotation. with them all being guys unlikely to go super deep in games you're gonna need some multi inning guys like we had last year. And of course no one in the pen right now is exactly good so was hoping our young talented guys could step into spots there instead of the likes of Barnes, Wilkerson, Petricka, etc.

He only made one true relief appearance in the regular season last year (not counting the game Jennings "started"), and I think one in the playoffs.

He was pretty darn good in that one postseason relief appearance --- 3 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 6 ks --- https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN201810160.shtml

He was. But that doesn't change the fact that his relief experience is an extremely small sample. I almost wonder if that was a piggyback situation where he knew he was pitching, though, too. Given his propensity to be bad in the 1st inning in his starts, I wouldn't trust him in a relief role. That said ... I don't trust anyone right now, so who knows?

I've heard this a lot of times about pitchers but don't really know if having first inning problems as a starter necessarily relates to them having it as a reliever. They really are two different things from the mental side of things.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

For 2-4 mil why not.

Maybe this signals a youngin to the pen now, or they could put gio there at some point. Lots of options.

Now let’s trade for smoak, Sign kimbrel, and go win this thing.

You would ask for Smoak and Kimbrel. Nevermind the asking price.

Well do you want to win it or go 50th year without? Some people here act like we’re the Little sisters of the poor.

This team isn’t winning the central, And certainly not getting past the dodgers without an ELITE bullpen. And if we can get the best hi leverage arm in the world for $9 million > whatever

If we need help with the 8 mil on smoak, give them a better prospect.

Smoak is a FA after this year. The question is what prospects would Stearns be willing to part with to get Smoak for one year.

I don't think the money would matter because I'm sure Thames would have to be part of the deal. As for getting Kimbrel (best hi leverage arm in the world) for $9M--not going to happen. He refused almost $18M for one year already.

You are absolutely correct, but with the pitching failing so miserably and getting worse, CC has no better recourse but to keep throwing the crap and see if anything sticks. Maybe Gio can help (certainly can't hurt) and maybe Nelson can become a viable option sometime soon. Too many maybes, but CC has no other choice but to put the rubber gloves on and fire away.

It’s been reported his asking price has dropped to 3 @ 45

Backload 3 mil

Prorated 1/6 of 15 = 3

15-6= 9 mil for this year, 16 mil in 2020, 17 mil in 2021.

9 mil for this year. Keep him or trade him this offseason or at next year’s deadline.

You're making an enormous assumption that his new reported asking price is going to account for his first year being prorated.

There's really no reason to believe that at this point. Nor is there much reason to believe he's going to backload money or that we'll be able to easily trade him in the future when nobody else has signed him and now you're backloading money and saying, "here, take him and give us something for him."

If he signs the 3 year it will be prorated for this year according to rosenthal and heyman. So if he won’t backload, fine 12 mil for this year less owed next 2, Easier to trade. Personally, I wouldn’t trade him, I’d want my 9th inning locked down, and use Hader Knebel Jeffress Wahl Rasmussen to shut down the enemy from the 6th inning.

Let's not make yet another thread about the finances and the who/what/why/how/and when of a Kimbrel deal. That's being discussed ad nauseam in literally every other thread on the site. Take it to the Kimbrel thread please. This thread is about the GIo Gonzalez signing. If you want to discuss the trickle down effects of that signing to the rest of the bullpen, awesome, but if we want to discuss the financials of a possible Kimbrel deal (somehow, yet again), take it to the Kimbrel thread.

Thanks.

I just got chewed out by Coach Cooper, and he said to put an end to this stuff, ASAP.

Good low risk move for Gio. These are the incremental moves you make as a .500 team currently tanking it; the team needs to prove itself as a pennant contender before going for more splash moves. Also got to believe at this point there's just way too much organizational depth to not find five serviceable starters the rest of the way.

Odds are, he is a 5 inning pitcher on his best days. Would be nice to have a couple guys who could, on occasion go 7 innings, and normally go 6.

Keuchel went 7 or more innings 11 times last year.

Gonzalez went 7 or more innings 7 times last year.

I know you're not saying we should sign Keuchel (maybe you are?!?), but Gonzalez did occasionally go 7 innings, just last year.

We still forget how the game has changed. Very few pitchers avg 6 innings+ anymore. You're looking for guys who can give 5 good innings, and 6 or 7 occasionally. The problem th his year isnt so much length of outings, its that all too often the starter has been lit up early and often.

If Gio is a guy who can do that, even for a stretch of the season, great. If not, another try for Houser, Burnes, Peralta. Then its on to Brown, maybe Nelson. No magical plan here, just keep trying.

And beyond them there's Wilkerson, Smith, Jankins, Supak. There's just too much depth to not be able to piece together a rotation the rest of the way. We're cursed if there aren't five serviceable starters to be had from 14 pitchers that have either had MLB success, have a ton of talent, or are having a ton of success in the upper level minors. There should be a few bullpen contributors left over to boot.

I agree the game has changed, but the Brewers are still dead last in innings per start. The amount of innings our bullpen is eating up is a concern given the lack of top end arms in said bullpen.

This really shouldn't be a question given our starters ERA is a shade under double digits... but .... who's spot in the rotation does he take? Davies and Chacin are probably locked in the rotation right now. That leaves Woodruff, Anderson, and Peralta. If Anderson throws the ball well tomorrow again, would they take another one of the young arms out of the rotation?

I would go six starters (I haven't kept up with the status of Peralta) one time through if need be to give Woodruff Saturday, plus another game to keep a starter role. He'll have had seven starts to earn more starts. There is just too much hemorrhaging runs at this point to not try something else.

This also assuming Anderson throws good enough Friday to keep in the rotation.

Since Burnes is down in AAA, I would move Woodruff to the pen. This wouldn't be the end of his chances as a starter for the Brewers. He would just have to earn it Suter style.

As of today, I think it's pretty simple. Davies, Chacin, Anderson, Gio, Woodruff. Peralta can go to AAA when he comes off IR. This will change, likely often, as we go through the season. If Woodruff can't hold down a rotation spot, he goes to the pen where he can be effective. No point in AAA trip for him. Burnes and Houser can be used in the pen, not sure what to do with Peralta. But right now, there's not exactly a problem of having too many good starting pitchers.

Being last in innings pitched by starters isn’t necessarily a problem by itself, but in the Brewers’ case it’s not just short starts but the number of runs given up in those short starts.

They aren’t just dumping a big workload on the bullpen but putting the team in holes that the offense can’t overcome even if the bullpen shuts down the opponent.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I still don't see anything official.

Still waiting on physical?

Waiting until he would be pitching anyways - so have an extra day or two to figure out 40 man roster move? All the low hanging "60 day injury" fruit is picked, right?
