Thank goodness. We need something to change with the pitching staff. Hopefully he can do a decent job. He could end up being our ace the way everyone else is pitching.

Impossible, Zach Davies is our ACE!

If he can provide even a 4.5 ERA, that represents an improvement for our staff (!)

My hopes are that Gonzales, Chase Anderson, & Jimmy Nelson can be solid if unspectacular starters for the Brewers, which would then put Woodruff & Peralta back in the bullpen where (in my opinion) they belong.

I never understood why Woodruff & Peralta were considered starters in the first place. Neither has a 3rd pitch and they were great out of the bullpen down the stretch last year. Our present bullpen consists of an overrated Hader, Junior Guerra, Jeffress and a bunch of question marks. Adding some depth and putting pitchers into spots where their skillsets can shine would go a long ways towards righting this sinking ship!

Now can we please sign Kimbrel next?!?!?!

He's terrible.

Since the beginning of 2016:

Gonzalez = 3.87 ERA/3.95 FIP

Chacin = 4.09 ERA/4.18 FIP

Anderson = 3.69 ERA/4.66 FIP

Davies = 3.92 ERA/4.13 FIP

And the best ERA so far this season from the Brewers 4-pack of young starters (including Houser) is Woodruff's 5.81.

Based on the above numbers it wouldn't be a stretch to say that he instantly becomes the Brewers #1 starting pitcher.

FIP

Chacin 5.71

Peralta 5.83

Burnes 9.85

Albers 5.62

Wilson 5.30

Guerra 5.81

I'm sure some of these guys will come around as the season progresses, but the good new is Gio Gonzalez is a useful major league pitcher. He generally keeps the ball in the ballpark, and his FIP was 4.25 last year in arguably his worst full season as a pro.

Odds are, he is a 5 inning pitcher on his best days. Would be nice to have a couple guys who could, on occasion go 7 innings, and normally go 6.

Yankees didn't think he was useful and they have a need. He's different, I'm just not sure he's better.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Other than Chacin, who do we have that isn't a 5 inning pitcher on his best days? Anderson?

For 2-4 mil why not.

Maybe this signals a youngin to the pen now, or they could put gio there at some point. Lots of options.

Now let’s trade for smoak, Sign kimbrel, and go win this thing.

You would ask for Smoak and Kimbrel. Nevermind the asking price.

I like the points system used to provide incentives. Is this something new?

From https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/04/brewers-to-sign-gio-gonzalez.html

The incentives package reflects changes in modern pitching usage. It’s a points-based system, as Jon Heyman of MLB Network first tweeted. Gonzalez can earn two points every time he makes an appearance of three or more innings and one point for all other appearances. He’ll receive $333,333 upon accumulating his 25th, 30th, 35th, and 40th points and then $333,334 with his 45th and 50th, Robert Murray of The Athletic explains on Twitter.
